"Close your eyes," Jade said quietly. The way he was looking at her, Jade couldn't stand it. It was driving her crazy, and not in a bad way. It was a good way.

"Why?" Michael asked, taking a step towards her.

"Stay there and just close your eyes," Jade groaned.

There was a knowing glint in Michael's eyes, like he knew exactly what Jade was thinking. He closed his eyes and folded his arms across his chest. "Now what?"

"Stay," Jade said quietly again and stepped up to him. Her heart was beating too fast, her palms were sweating, and she was a nervous wreck. But she wanted to do this now. She stepped on her tiptoes and leaned towards Michael. She heard his breath hitch and then his hands were on her waist. Jade closed her eyes, put her hands on either side of his face and gently touched her lips to Michael's, kissing him softly for a second before pulling away and letting her arms drop.

Her eyes were still closed when she felt Michael cup her face and whisper, "Jade." His left thumb caressed her cheek and he continued. "Hey, look at me."

Jade opened her eyes reluctantly and found herself staring into his green ones. He had a small smile on his lips and Jade wanted to capture it with hers. "Why did you do that?" Michael murmured, leaning down so that they were more eye level.

"Because I wanted to," Jade said. She was so scared of what she was doing, but she was also glad she was doing it. Denying her feelings would help neither her nor Michael.

Michael grinned a little, barely showing his teeth. "What if I want to do it again?"

"Don't," Jade breathed and closed her eyes again. She might've kissed Michael and she might've liked it, but she knew she shouldn't keep doing it. Falling for Michael was one thing, something she could handle. But getting hurt by him was another thing, something she couldn't handle.

But then Sheila's word rang in her ears and Michael's promise to keep her happy and she was torn again.

"Why not?" She could feel his hot breath on her lips and his nose brush against hers. Their lips were so close, not close enough, and it was terrifying Jade. Terrifying her because a voice kept saying that she could trust him not to hurt her when she thought she couldn't. Terrifying her because she wanted to keep kissing him and never stop.

"Don't kiss me, Michael," she whispered as their lips just barely brushed. "I dare you." That was probably a low blow, but it didn't sway Michael.

He kissed the tip of Jade's nose and a tremor went down her spine. She didn't like this and at the same time she loved it. Her knees were on the verge of giving out. The only thing keeping her standing was Michael's hold on her.

"I gave into one dare and it cost me the best thing that's ever happened to me," Michael said. "I'm not doing it again." Another kiss on her closed eyes. "But if you don't want me to kiss you, I won't." A light kiss on her forehead, right between her eyebrows. "Do you want me to kiss you, Jade?"

Jade could've lied. She could've said no. She could've changed the subject. She could've faked an asthma attack. She could've pretended to choke on air. But she didn't do any of those things.
