In the next two days, I was practising with my water and I realised that the connections I felt seemed to help with the water bending.

I grinned as I flicked my finger towards the tap I could make out beyond the walls through the slightly closed door of my bedroom.

A stream of water slipped through and I started to play around with it, moving my hands and fingers around to form shapes.

I laughed giddily, watching two water kittens pounce and bounce around, trying to catch the butterfly I had formed.

A sudden knock on the door made me lose concentration and the water wet my bed.

“Cale,” I said coolly as my brother entered my room.

During the two days I could almost recognise familiar presences of water.

And Cale I had grown accustomed to.

“Are they still watching TV? Ben 10?” I snickered.

“Well it’s pretty good,” he reasoned and stared down at the damp patch, arching an eyebrow. “Did you pee yourself in a nightmare?”

“No!” I said hotly and narrowed my eyes at him.

I held out a hand and jerked it up into the air.

The water followed and trailed back to the sink, disappearing down the bathroom sink.

“We are so lucky mum decided to pop out two days ago when we came back,” he commented, running a hand through his black hair.

“Yeah,” I agreed, remembering the note taped to the countertop. “Where is she now? She keeps disappearing.”

“Oh I overheard her talk with Yolanda on the phone,” he said casually, sitting down on the bed by my feet. “Apparently mum got a job as one of the assistant chefs in a fancy restaurant in town.”

“Wait . . . no way!” I squealed. “La Langoustine?!”

“Yeah I think that’s it,” he said with a shrug. “Apparently they have the best lobsters in town.”

“How did mum get a fancy job like that?!” I exclaimed. “Not that I doubt her.”

“She has connections and so does dad,” he explained. “Something to do with good technology system in the restaurant.”

We sat in silence while I played with the split end strands of my hair. “Can we go down to the slalom today? I want to try out something I saw on Youtube that might help me for the Rollerblading competition on Saturday.”

“Oh yeah mum knew about that earlier and she is apparently catering for the after-party that the contestants have at the slalom,” he mentioned. “So she signed you and Ashleigh up already.”

“Great!” I chirped. “I wanna see the course that I’m up against!”

I watched professional people move around with equipment and soon a practise course was set up.

I watched signs go up and it was specifically cleared for rollerbladers only.

With a squeal, Ashleigh and I made our way to the star and strolled through.

We were being watched by skaters but we didn’t care.

The real course would probably be similar so it was worth being stared at.

A sharp ‘S’ bend almost had me tripping if it weren’t for Ashleigh’s lead.

Sliding up the ramp and coming back down, I followed Ash to the finish line along another series of ramps and jumps.
