The second Nyla walked in the gym, she grinned, because they had decorated the gym for the dance, and it looked so ... effervescent.

Different colored cloths were hanging loosely on the ceiling. The floor was no longer the bland brown shade it normal is. It seemed the coordinators of the dance had laid down a navy blue cover over the hardwood floors. The walls were white, as they always were. Round tables were scattered around, but clearly not in the middle of the gym, where the dance floor was placed.

Nyla loved it for she had never been to a dance, and the way the place was decorated made her wish she had come more often.

Nyla looked over at Ace to find he was staring down at her. With a smile Nyla grabbed his hand. “Shall we dance?” Nyla asked Ace.

Ace immediately nodded and led her over to the area that the teens were gathering to dance.

Soon, their bodies were gliding with the soft music.

Nyla couldn’t help but keep a content expression on her face, for Ace was holding her as they moved to the sound that filled the room.

This was her dream, to be with Ace … even for one night.

Slowly, Nyla rested her head on Ace’s shoulder. His musky, yet minty scent filled her nostrils. Part of her couldn’t help but inhale deeply and take in all of the smell.

Nyla knew for a fact that this was a once in a lifetime chance, and by golly she was going to enjoy it.

Suddenly, Ace stopped moving and backed up a little so he could look at Nyla.

Her eyebrows instantly furrowed. Her mind started to wonder what in the world made him stop dancing.

Was it the fact that she placed her head on his shoulder? Or sniffed him?

Nyla noted that his lips were moving and she watched him say: “are you okay?”

She let a grin creep on her face, “yeah, why?”

“I was talking to you, and you weren’t replying,” Ace muttered.

Just then Nyla remembered she had failed to inform her date that she was deaf.

In reality, she didn’t want to tell him, because she was afraid that he would start to treat her like some deaf girl in need of assistance and pity 24/7. Out of all the people in the world, she hated the mere thought of Ace thinking she was some handicap child.

Nyla’s eyes drifted to the floor in sadness, because she was now faced with the difficult decision of if to tell Ace or not.

Swiftly, Ace placed his hand on Nyla’s chin and moved her face so that her eyes were now staring into his. “Nyla, what is it?” Ace asked. Slowly, he started to wonder if it was something he did tonight that upset her. His brain raced with all his actions of this evening. Nothing stood out that could make this woman before him so down.

“I ... Uhhh ... you see...” Nyla started to mutter and soon she fell silent.

“You can tell me anything, you know that ... right?” He questioned.

“There are some things that aren’t meant to be told,” Nyla replied.

Ace was starting to become more and more confused as the seconds passed. He didn’t know why, but something inside of him was itching to know what was making Nyla so upset and secretive.

“Damn it, Nyla, tell me,” he hissed in frustration.

“What did you say?” Nyla quizzed for she swore that she read Ace lips and he called her a ‘bitch’. “You know if you think that of me, then you should’ve pretended to be sick or something, instead of coming with me tonight.”

With tears slowly leaking from her eyes, Nyla hurriedly ran away from Ace.

“Why was Nyla running out of the gym crying?” Ethel asked as she marched over to her brother: Ace.

A beyond puzzled expression laid on his face, for he had no idea what just happened. “I don’t know. When we were dancing I tried talking to her but she wouldn’t reply ... then-”

“Ace, you do know that Nyla is deaf? Right?” Ethel asked.

Ace let a quizzical look cascade over his face. “Huh?”

“She is deaf, as in can’t hear. She knows what people say by reading lips.”

Just then Ace realized that when he was talking to her that Nyla never heard him. Here he thought that she was mad at him about something because she was not replying to him.

Quickly, Ace dashed off in the direction his saw Nyla go. Even though he had full knowledge that he had no idea where Nyla had went, he was determined to find Nyla.

Ace seemed to believe that his legs weren’t going fast enough as he raced down the deserted halls. His ears were trying to pick up on any sounds that would indicate that Nyla was near.

Hope flooded out of him when he reached the opposite end of the school and couldn’t find Nyla. Ace knew that he had searched every room in the school, even got a random girl in the hall to check the bathrooms for him.

The only place he hadn’t looked was ... the roof.

With urgency took off towards the staircase that led to the rooftop of the school. Every part of him was hoping that she was up there.

He had no clue as to why he was aching knowing something was upsetting her. He even questioned why back in the gym he was so hot headed about her not replying to him.

Soon the door to the roof came in view and Ace slowed down. Gradually, he reached the door and opened it.

Once out in the cool air, Ace glanced around. At first, all he saw was the city lights and the moon lit sky. Yet, in the far right of the roof he spotted something silver. Glancing over he saw Nyla was standing beside the ledge and looking out at the neighborhood surrounding the school.

As he got closer, he noted that she was crying.

“Nyla?”

She didn’t move an inch at his words. Just then, he fully realized that she was indeed deaf. Guilt spread through him as he got closer and closer to her.

When Ace was beside her, Nyla finally looked over at him. Once she did, however, her tears started to flood down her rosy cheeks some more.

Unsure of what to do, Ace, hugged her and with his thumb he rubbed circles on her back.

After only a few short seconds, Nyla wiggled out of his hold. “Why are you comforting me?”

His mouth opened, “I-I ...-”

“Why did you call me a bitch? Was it because I didn’t reply to you while we were dancing?”

“What? You think I called you a ‘bitch’?” Ace quizzed.

“That ...That is what I-I...” Nyla knew right then that she couldn’t say that is what she heard, because Nyla never heard him say that. She just read his lips and saw his perfect, pink lips move in the motion of the word ‘bitch’.

“I never called you that,” Ace stated.

Nyla was too caught up in her thoughts to know that Ace had said something.

He knew that she didn’t see him talk, so, Ace stepped forward and snaked his arms around her thin waist.

Immediately, Nyla looked up at him and wondered what the hell he was doing.

“I never called you that. Why would I call the girl I want to date, a bitch?” Ace spoke slowly so that Nyla could know exactly what he was saying.

“What?” Nyla called out in shock, for surely she’d messed up what he was saying.

Ace knew that Nyla saw what he said, so instead of replying with words, Ace leaned down and placed his lips on hers.

Nyla’s hand involuntarily moved to Ace’s head, where her fingers intertwined in the strands of his hair.

Ace’s arms moved from her waist to grasp her hot, wet cheeks with the palm of his hands in hopes of deepening the kiss.

After a good bit of time passed, with their mouths moving in sync, Ace backed his head away, breaking the heated contact of their lips. He couldn’t help but grin when Nyla leaned in, clearly wanting more, but he knew they need to talk.

“Why?” Nyla mumbled after a while.

When Ace saw that she was looking at him he spoke, “why what?”

“Why did you kiss me?”

“Because, I-I ... I like you.”

A blush crept up on Nyla’s face. “Stop lying...”

“I am serious. Admittedly, I didn’t know you until you started hanging around Ethel. But I’ve been seeing you, practically, every day now. We’ve got a lot in common, and not to mention you are the smartest, prettiest girl I know.”

Nyla started to turn at least thirty shades of red from Ace’s words, but a tiny bit of her was sad for she wished she could hear his voice as he spoke those words.

“Nyla, will you go out with me?” Ace asked her when he captured her attention again.

Nyla started to nibble her bottom lip. She began to wonder if she should take a chance and date the guy that she has been falling for over the years ... or ... did the possibility of getting heartbroken outweigh the alternative?
