Chapter 4

Picture: Carter Young

Lacey was Xavier's sister. I still couldn't think straight as I sat down in my seat. My new seat, the opposite side of where I sat yesterday. I decided to sit at the other side of the classroom, away from Xavier's seat. My stomach hurt. Not from the fresh bruises from yesterday, but type that hurt internally.

I felt sick to my stomach thinking about my behavior from yesterday, it was inacceptable. I shouldn't have let Xavier get so close to me know how kind Lacey was to me since I first met her. I couldn't help but almost crave a friendship. I'd always wondered what it would be like to have someone to tell secrets to and have someone to call a friend.

But I also knew if my father found out, we would have to leave town. Just like last time. My mood saddened as I laid my head on the desk. My red cheek felt good against the cool desk. I then wrinkled my nose thinking about all the germs that were probably on the desk and raised my head back up.

SCREEK went the chair next to me. My head shot up to look at the culprit, for a second my heart raced at the thought of Xavier sitting next to me. But my heart flattered at the sight of an unfamiliar face. The slightly tan skinned boy with bright blue eyes gave me a heartwarming smile.

I was always so scared to be near the male specie, too frightened knowing they would be able to dominate me, it was like an automatic reflex to flinch away from them, but this boy. He had a tiny dimple on his left cheek with bright blue eyes that held nothing but curiosity and happiness.

"Can I sit here," even if he seemed to have a baby face, his voice told otherwise with its deepness reminding me he was still an eighteen year old hormonal adolescent. I just shrugged pushing my chair slightly away from him. He seemed like a nice guy, but looks can deceive. Suddenly a hand came shooting to my view. I almost jumped out of my seat at the boy's hand.

"I'm Derek," he said still giving me that smile that was starting to scare me a little. I gave a slight nod of acknowledgement. When I didn't reach out to shake his hand, I could see the slight flatter in Derek's smile and hurt in his eyes.

"I'm Sasha," I said not looking at him anymore. Instead I looked at the floor not wanting to talk anymore. My bruises were starting to hurt again. "Yeah I think the whole class knew that after yesterday," Derek said in a teasing tone. Still looking at the ground a blush took over my cheek as I wondered why such a good looking guy like him was talking to someone like me. "Hey what happened to your fa-."

Suddenly I heard a growl come from the front of the classroom, already knowing exactly who it was. Even though I wanted to look up really bad, I didn't. I wouldn't look at Xavier, after his text messages from last night I found that he had tried calling me four more times that morning. I had refused each and every one of his calls.

My body seemed to protest against what I wanted. My head rose slightly. The still wet hair from the shower I had taken that morning shielded half my red face. His eyes were that pitch black I was starting to get used to. His gaze wasn't on me this time but on Derek. They were filled with some sort of unknown rage.

Suddenly he was walking toward us. I started to feel panic, not for my sake but for Derek. I glanced at Derek shocked to see him smirking at Xavier. It was like Derek was planting his own grave for himself to be buried in.

They stared at each other for a good minute. If anyone else were to walk by they would think they were having a stare down. I could speak to differ. It looked more like they were having a silent conversation I was unaware of. Derek brutally stood up from his chair, almost dropping it in the process. I couldn't help but draw back at the sudden movement.
