Working as a secretary isn't a bad job

Working as a secretary isn't a bad job... only if I had to serve some less despicable person.

I spend whole days in Bureš's office. I make him coffee, run small errands for him, write things he dictates... stuff like that. Unfortunately, I haven't encountered anything suspicious, the less discrediting. All I can do is to keep pretending I'm Petra with a memory loss and serve this vile man until he lets the cat out of the bag.

Also, he enjoys staring at my cleavage which makes me rather uncomfortable.

I'm standing by a coffee machine in his office; this man's caffeine consumption is extreme. Then I hear him cursing. Is something finally happening?

"Kurva!" Bureš bangs his fist on the table.

"What's the matter?" I ask, approaching him with a cup of coffee in my hand. I take a look at the screen of his computer. My heart starts beating faster when I see the headline:

Augments contaminated with Flicker. Who's behind the planned genocide on Castaways?

"One victory, one defeat, I guess," he replies, massaging the temples of his head. "We managed to put an end to Wardens, but our plan with the Flicker epidemy is in shit now. Not only they got that goddamn cure which reduces the Amiss mortality. And now someone found out it's connected with our Augments!"

That's it. A confession.

Come on, Lenka, don't screw this up.

"Could you please remind me what your plan was?" I ask as innocently as possible. "I forgot."

Bureš gives me a suspicious look - I'm almost certain he still suspects I'm not who I claim to be. But he has no choice but to play along. "You really don't remember? It's strange since you were one of the people who helped to realize the plan. But okay. Some time ago, we started to produce cheap Augments infected with Flicker to reduce the Amiss numbers a bit. It worked - until that damn cure appeared."

Yes! That's exactly what I needed.

"Oh, I think I recall something," I say. "What are you planning to do with that situation?"

"The factory here in Prague is still running," Bureš utters. "We have to repeat the process - destroy the factory and cover the tracks. I have to inform Zeman and then, we must act as quickly as possible. If someone found out about it, it would be the end for us."

Good to know.

"That means you are going to visit the factory now?" I ask.

"First, I have to discuss the whole matter with Tomáš Zeman," Bureš replies. "I'll let you know how did it go. I don't want to jump into conclusions."

"Can I go with you once it's decided?" I ask.

Bureš raises his eyebrows. "I thought you'd want to avoid such events after what happened recently. But if you insist on going with me, then, of course, I won't be stopping you."
