"Hush, little baby, don't say a word,
Mama's going to buy you a mockingbird.
And if that mockingbird don't sing,
Mama's going to buy you a diamond ring."

My mother's sweet voice rang through my ears as I played with her hair and tried to sleep.

"Mommy?" I asked.

"Yes Katherine?" She said and moved the hair out of my face while smiling.

"Why do you and dad have to go?" My voice cracked and her face no longer held a smile.

"You'll understand one day, but I just want you to know we love you very much and we will come back." She said and a tear fell from her cheek and onto my face.

I giggled and said, "Mommy don't cry or else I am going to cry to." My small hands made their way to her cheeks and cleaned her tears.

She laughed and kissed my forehead. "You'll understand when your older honey. You'll be the greatest women ever and the most powerful. Rest now my child."

"Goodnight mommy."

"Goodnight Katherine. I love you."

She stood up and turned off the lights leaving me alone in the dark not knowing what was going to happen.

Little did my 5 year old self know that, that would be the last time I saw her.
