“A-about what?”

“That confession of Henry’s was just too formal.  Your mother may be easily fooled, but I know a guilty look when I see one.”

“Guilty?” I asked, not making eye contact.

“Margret, I’m not going to tell your mother.  I…I just want to be closer to you.  I know how mean your mother can be, there isn’t much I can do except listen to you.”

I finally looked at him in surprise.  “Dad, I don’t understand. Why can’t you do anything?  You’re the man.”

He sighed and sat next to me.  “It’s just your mother.  It’s complicated.  But forget about that, what actually happened today?”

I rubbed the back of my neck nervously.  “Well, Henry is a bad guy, but maybe not as bad as I once thought.  He was helping me today.”

“Alright, I’m going to need some background information.”

“Please don’t tell mother, but I’m actually already dating Declan.” I said quickly.

He chuckled, “That doesn’t surprise me.  He’s a very charming young man.  Smart too.  He’s honestly what I would want for my daughter.”

I looked at him in awe, “Really?!”

“Yes.  Granted his mother is eccentric, but she’s very kind, and your mother didn’t exactly bring out the best in her.”

“That’s true.”

“So now that I have that background, what happened today?”

“Well, Henry and Declan know each other and I thought Henry was trying to get back at Declan with me, and I didn’t want mother to throw me at him anymore so I made a plan to entice Henry to kiss me or something and get caught, like we did, but I called Declan first and he said no because he didn’t want another guy touching me like that.  Well, ends up Henry heard that conversation and decided to go ahead with the plan at his own expense because he needed me to not get grounded by his mother for sleeping around.  Ends up he cares for me and did it because he wanted to help.” I rushed out.

My dad sat and thought for a minute.  “That was very noble of him.”

“Yes it was.”

“Have you told Declan that Henry has kissed you?”

“Not yet.”

“Have you kissed Declan?”

“I have.”

“That’s the look of guilt I saw.” He said chuckling.
