Room in Whitefield & Swami Vetoes Hospital Seva

January 21, 1987

Prasanthi Nilayam

Dear Peoples,

Jai Sri Sai Ram! I hope you are all well, I am fine, I had a little sore throat then cold for about ten days running… but now I'm fine.

Luckily my new roommate didn’t have trouble paying the rent with one office guy (there are several but one who is less strict), so my stay wasn’t hindered in Prasanthi Nilayam. Swami left on January 20th for Whitefield. For the Guest House they’re not so strict at all, so I'm settled nicely in a room (A-13). There are four others in the room: Nancy from SF center, Marsha from California (an old time devotee, very nice; we’re practicing Hindi together) Suman from Sri Lanka (I roomed with her before in Whitefield), and a new devotee Christina from Germany, nice room but a little talky.

As I was getting in the “in” crowd in Prasanthi Nilayam, I happened to get in a position to work at the Sai Hospital taking care of a bedridden patient, the chief doctor’s wife. It would mean an all-night shift and never leaving Prasanthi Nilayam (for length of visa). But when the doctor took all the info about me to Swami, Swami didn't give permission, saying it should be an Indian working there, and not so young also. (Previously Swami had said to the doctor that he needed a nurse for his wife - just imagine, the whole ashram and I was the only one, foreigner or Indian, that offered to help!)

I’ve been doing so much sadhana and really feeling happy – I guess Swami wants me to continue this instead of so much work seva here or He would’ve given permission for me to work there! So it seems that a lot of sadhana here, and a little seva in America, is enough for me. (Well, there is opportunity for a little seva in Prasanthi Nilayam, as I help some little old ladies up & down stairs, and to their rooms after bhajans.)

May all the world have peace & happiness!

With Love,

Eileen
