A wolf, a forest, a battle, a new beginning- Chap2 {the first battle}

Chap 3

I raced through the forest along with my hunting partner, Leaf. Our job was to track down any stags for dinner; so far we were with no luck.

"I give up, why don't we raid the rat nest again?" Leaf asked, walking behind a bush.

I stared at her as if she was crazy, well technically she is crazy. The last time we raided a rat's nest, 3 of our most precious wolves died from infected wounds, damn who knew rats could fight?

"Are you crazy?" I ask.

No answer

"C-cloud, come here." I hear Leaf stammer from behind the bushes.

"Huh? What's wrong?" I ask,

No answer.

I start padding towards the bush where Leaf's voice came from. As I get closer this sour smell comes towards me, it smelt like something rotten. I peak around the bush and see Leaf; she is standing stiffly above a ball of white, so that's where the smell came from!

"Leaf?" I ask,

Then that's when I realise it, the ball of white fur, it's a body of a wolf. Rotten.

I freeze solid too, this was not good, a body of a wolf on our side of the territory. If this wolf belonged to Runulf... then we are dead meat. An ear piercing howl came from beside me, it was Leaf, and she was calling an alarm of danger.

"Are you crazy?" I scream and knocked her aside. She looked at me with bewilder eyes. A few heart beats later Leader, Brook, Holly and Mountain was by our side.

"Where's the danger?" Leader asked sternly.

"What, is that smell?" I hear Holly whisper to Brook.

"Leader." I hear Mountain gasp, staring at the ball of white behind me. Leader rushed forward, pushing Leaf and I aside. She studied the dead wolf for which seemed like moons, then lifted her head, facing Leaf and I with panicked eyes.

"Get back to camp! NOW!" I jolted at the sharpness of leader's voice, but forced my legs to turn and pelt away.

I crashed into the clearing of our den, and 7 heads turned to look at me.

"Cloud?" I hear Tangie say, "We heard you call the warning, what wrong?" she asked again.

Silence.

Before Tangie could say anything Leaf ran into the clearing.

"H-help R-Runulf s-saw t-the b-body," Leaf staggered.

"Runulf?! What body?! What are you talking about?" Tangie's eyes widened.

"N-no time to explain, hurry!" Leaf screeched.

Within a few heartbeats, Tangie rounded up our senior wolves Rose, Hail, Ruby and Storm, and took off after Leaf and I.

As we ran further into the forest I could hear the howls of distress and anger, we ran towards the noise, and it awful, blood and fur everywhere, but more importantly we were totally outnumbered. I spotted a large brown wolf that had pinned Mountain down. Suddenly I was knocked down on the ground, I howled in rage as it pinned me to the ground. Looking up saw the brown wolf that had came with Runulf earlier that day. I batted my hind legs against my enemies' soft belly, clawing out huge chunks of gray fur.

"You're the precious wolf aren't you?" He snarled, I wriggled beneath him, trying to get free. "Well since your pack killed Snowflake I guess I'll just have to kill you!" I whimpered as his snout came down at my throat for the final bite that would cost me my life. Then his weight came off, I looked up to see Brook. Her face was of pure hatred, as she dragged my enemy by the throat. He snarled and twisted in her grip to get free, but Brook's teeth were firm in its spot. Slowly dark red blood welled from the throat, I froze, we were only supposed to let the enemy know that they have lost, not to kill... if we did, as punishment, we would be exiled from our pack.

I watched in horror as the gray wolf went limp, Brook dropped him with satisfaction in her bloodlust eyes, she turned to me with the same hungry eyes; I yipped in fright and took a step back. Brook wasn't normally like this in fighting, she was always calm and powerful, never angry or out of control. Something came from behind Brook and leaped, before I had a chance to warn her, she had already spun around and dove for the throat of the brown wolf, but this wolf, which I now identified as Hallow, was fast, he swerved around the side of Brook and nipped her fore leg. She cried in pain and kicked out her back leg, Hallow jumped away just in time as the paw struck out. They fought snarling, and biting while I stood motionless. Around them other wolves fought, it was impossible to see exactly who was winning. My eyes caught Leaf; she was pinned down by another wolf... and was losing...
