Chapter 14:

When his lips touched mine, I felt like I started to melt onto him. The feel of his lips on mine made my cheeks go rosy. Slowly, my hands reached up to his brown hair, and with my right hand I slid off the rest of his mask.

Jack wrapped his large arms around me, pressing me closer to him to deepen the kiss. I kept my eyes closed, so his face was still a mystery to me. I felt Jack nibble on my bottom lip, and it tickled. I smiled, opening my mouth. Our tongues met in a fiery dance, and I couldn’t help but think to myself, I’m a terrible person for liking this so much.

When I thought I couldn’t get enough, Jack pulled away. I opened my eyes, and a chill went throughout my body. His skin was a smoky grey color, and his eyes were not there. Instead, they were black pits. A black liquid stained his cheeks, and I couldn’t help but stare. “Jack-” I was about to speak but Jack shushed me by pressing his index finger over my lips.

I remained quiet, and Jack removed his finger from my lips. “We need to start packing,” Jack said, and when he did, I caught what his teeth looked like. They were sharp, and surprisingly enough they were clean. I was holding onto Jack’s mask when he grabbed it, and I was disappointed to see him put it back onto his face.

With a final look into my eyes, Jack walked around to find a large backpack. “Grab what you need, we have limited space,” Jack stated. I was still in a shock of what had happened a few seconds ago, but I managed to walk around and find my small pile of clothes Jack brought for me when I was knocked out. That was pretty much all I needed, plus maybe some toiletries.

Jack grabbed the stuff I brought to him and neatly put it in the pack, then flung it over his shoulder. “You’re not grabbing anything?” I asked.

“I already packed,” Jack answered. Alrighty then. “Let’s get going, we are being expected,” Jack said, grabbing me by my wrist.

We walked out of the hut, and I have to admit. I’m going to miss that little place. It was a cute little set up and it’s a shame that Jack has to leave it. It has been my home for the past weeks.

I kept my eyes on the ground for most of the walk, just letting my random thoughts wander, mainly about the kiss Jack and I had shared moments earlier. “Are you scared?” Jack asked.

“No,” I replied. I have so much to fear, but I’m not scared of death, which is what I assumed he was referring to. Why would I be scared? The Government can’t hurt me, since I am no killer. Although I’ve helped the killers a few times, they can’t arrest me and/or kill me because they have no evidence. The only thing I’m fearing is that they capture Jack.

The feelings I knew I had for Jack were made clear when Jack and I kissed. If he were to be captured, I’d do anything to get him back.

When I looked up, I saw my home before I went to Jack’s hut. “Jack, why did you take me here?” I asked, turning to him. He gripped my wrists harder and guided me forward onto the porch. I tried to resist, but he was too strong. “Jack! Stop!” I snapped, yanking my arm from him.

“You are staying here,” Jack said calmly, his gaze landing on mine. Before I could argue, Jack continued, “Xayla, please, just listen to me. If you come with me, you are going to be killed. I can’t protect you against everyone.”

“Jack-”

“I must apologize, Xayla… But we may not see each other again. It’s been my pleasure to meet you,” Jack interrupted me, and I bit my tongue to stop the tears. One single tear ran down my cheek, and Jack wiped it away with his thumb.

He walked to the door and opened it, beckoning me to enter. “Jack, please, let me come with you I don’t care if I get killed I just don’t want to sit around letting you all get captured I can help-”
