My mom's not home yet when I arrive, so I have to sit on my porch steps to wait

My mom's not home yet when I arrive, so I have to sit on my porch steps to wait. I don't have my key, I forgot it today. Now I regret forgetting them because she doesn't get off work until 5 and it's barely even 4.

I'll be lucky if Niall comes home and doesn't see me. He usually arrives a few minutes after I do, so he'll surely notice me waiting here and proceed to bother me. I'm dreading it already.

I take off my heavy backpack filled with my textbooks and other school things, finally giving my shoulders the break they need. I'm surprised my arms haven't fallen off yet.

It's warm out, the sun is hiding behind clouds and there's a little cool breeze. This is my kind of weather. I love fall. It isn't too cold or too hot. Perfect for me.

Just when I'm admiring the scenery of my neighborhood and the leaves flying in the air, the sound of my phone going off startles me. I dig in my back pocket to take it out.

It's my best friend, Cady. I've known her since seventh grade and she's the only person who knows me better than anybody else. I love her to death.

I know why she's calling so I'm not sure if I want to answer it.

She knows about my deep love for Harry and she's the one whose always pushed me to tell him how I felt. I told her a week ago that I was going to do it today. It was planned out and everything.

That is, until Niall came in and didn't let it happen. Stupid cheesehead.

Getting back to Cady, I decide to answer the phone. By the tone of her voice, I was right. She wants to talk about my confession.

"So, how did it go? Did you tell Harry? Please tell me you did." She says.

I can hear the sound of her boyfriend talking in the background.

Ugh, she and Liam were perfect together.

Liam has been with Cady for at least a year now, and every time I'm with them I feel like a third wheel. They were the type of couple who cuddled and kissed almost every second. They're cute but I'm so jealous of them. Watching them always makes me imagine Harry and I together.

I sigh before I reply, "Nope... I was going to, Cady, I really was. And this time it wasn't because I was too nervous to say it. Somebody interrupted us and Harry had to leave for football practice. I was so close, too." I say while I bite on my finger nails. It's a bad habit of mine.

"Oh..." She says, and I know she's disappointed for me. "I'm sorry, Kay... you'll tell him soon enough. Maybe today just wasn't the day."

"Yeah, I guess. I don't know. I feel like giving up soon. Harry will never like me anyway. We're not the same type of people. I would've just embarrassed myself. Maybe it was a good thing Niall stopped me before I told him."

"What? Um, is this really Kaya? I don't know what the hell you're talking about. What does it matter if he's popular and you're not? Don't let that put you down. You've liked him for so long and you're not giving up now. I'm not letting you. And what's this about Niall? Are you actually siding with him or something? Nope, Kaya. No." She says and I laugh. She's right.
