~Chapter (31)~

Albert Camus once wrote: “We always deceive ourselves twice about the people we love – first to their advantage, then to their disadvantages.”

We are never deceived, we deceive ourselves. That is the cruel reality that no one wants to admit.

The human mind works in such mysterious ways, it can show us everything we want to see, but only if we allow to do that. Almost everyone, is afraid of finding the truth, afraid of the unknown –of what it might bring to our lives, and how much it could change it. People trick themselves into believing a lie –a lie that aims to provide them with some sort of a comfort, and a peace in mind.

The signs are always there, but we make the wrong choice of ignoring them, blocking them away, or even translating them into other things.

I spent the night at the hospital, sitting alone on one of the benches outside Liam’s room. But, I did not have the audacity to step inside that room again, I settled for an uncomfortable seat right next to the door. I almost laughed at my own cowardice, how pathetic was I? If I couldn’t face an unconscious helpless man, then I might as well run away before he wakes up.

Sleep was a thousand miles away from my mind, I kept on repeating the events from the previous night, from Liam’s horrendous motorcycle accident to the shocking revelations of his son. Skye. The sweet adorable child I had met a few hours ago, he was one of those special kids, possessing an ability of mesmerizing everyone, making it easy to fall in love with them in a matter of minutes.

Skye was a beautiful lie, on the contrary to my horrible hurtful lie. As much as I was upset with Liam, for hiding the fact that he had a son, hiding what was supposed to be the most important person in his life. It was more of a wakeup call for me, and after weighing things over, I decided to go back to the apartment and spill the whole thing out to Jordan. I was going to tell him the truth, despite the consequences I’ll have to deal with later.

“Jordan!” I called out, stepping inside the apartment and closing the door behind me. “Jordan, where are you?” I asked, throwing my bag on the couch.

“Jordan!” I raised my voice a little, trying to find him.

Where was he? Did he leave already?

Maybe, he left to have breakfast with Julia or something.

“I’m here, Sel,” Jordan’s voice rang out from his bedroom. “I’m getting dressed, I’ll be right out,” he said. “Just give me a minute.”

I sighed, and took a seat on the couch. I was feeling more anxious by the second, my nerves were killing me, and my heart accelerated significantly. It felt like I was sitting in a court room waiting to hear my verdict.

        What if he hates me?

        I can’t lose him, he’s my only family. . .

But, it’s the right thing to do, isn’t it?

“Selena, how are you doing?” Jordan asked, giving me a concerned look. He was fully dressed in a pair of jeans, and a grey checkered long sleeved shirt. “Oh, why am I even asking? That’s really stupid of me. . . . Of course, you are having a terrible time. . .” Jordan gushed, he scratched his head and sat down.
