Chapter 21

(Gaining Friends)

Callista felt sad as she prepared to go to dinner. Darla had already left the room leaving her alone. She looked into the mirror to see the reflection of the navy blue and cream dress she wore. The teenage girl knew she looked beautiful but she didn’t feel beautiful. Callista hadn’t seen her guards since her confession and hated the idea she would lose them. “I don’t deserve them,” She said sadly. Hearing a knock on the door a moment later she didn’t even look at it before calling, “Come in.”

The teenage girl sighed and slowly turned to face who had entered. She was more than a little surprised to see her guards standing there. Callista bit her lip and waited for them to say goodbye.

Cavin and her guards had originally thought to make the teenage girl sweat out their presence but one look into her eyes and they couldn’t do it. “We aren’t leaving you,” Cavin said reassuringly. The teenage girl didn’t even think as she launched herself at her guards embracing them.

“Glad I closed the door,” Will remarked.

“Sorry,” Callista said as she released them. She lowered her eyes and then looked back up at them. “You sure about this?”

“We might not like what you did but you didn’t do it without a reason,” Braiden replied. “We did consider you to just be a sweet naive girl but we never actually asked you about your past either.”

“Well since this is my day of truth and we are on the subject of my past is there anything else you want to know about me?” The teenage girl inquired.

“Actually it’s time for you to join the other guests for dinner,” Cavin announced. “We can speak afterward.” Callista didn’t move as she watched him. “Time to go princess.” He smiled at her warmly and the teenage girl relaxed.

“Guess I shouldn’t keep anyone waiting,” Callista said. “But I really hope I can avoid Frazzier and Nadine!”

“Yeah I’d say they would be in the top spots of any retaliation,” Will commented. Callista actually glared at him. “I said they’d be on the list not that you would do anything.” Callista smiled and shrugged he had a point.

Greer walked over to her door and opened it. Callista smiled and walked out of her door with her guards at her back. As long as she had her guards she wasn’t very concerned about anything else.

“I was just coming to get you,” Owen said looking at her and then the Fae guards. He looked at Cavin and knew they had accepted her completely. “Shall we?” He said and offered his arm.

Callista smiled and accepted. “I just hope I’m nowhere near Nadine or Frazzier tonight.” Owen smirked and began leading his sister to the state dining room.

The dining room was already full of people as Callista entered the room on the arm of her brother. The teenager girl pretended not to notice Lady Nadine glaring at her as she walked past. Callista paid no attention to Frazzier as he leered at her as she past as well. She didn’t know where she was being led but as long as it wasn’t near either of the two people she disliked the most she didn’t care.

“Here we are,” Owen said and pulled out a chair at a table at the head of the room. Callista was pleased to See Amara and Moryn there. She also noticed Lady Marissa from the competition and smiled at her. She sat down to find the seat on her left empty. Whoever the seat belonged to had not arrived yet. Owen took a minute to introduce the others at the table.

“I still can’t believe you accepted Lady Nadine’s challenge,” Lady Marissa commented. “It was so nice to see her put in her place.”

“Even King Eloseh seemed to find it was time she lost,” Aidan commented sitting down next to the teenage girl.
