Chapter 56

Nobody could have predicted the outcome of one simple speech at the Mexican UN conference. Jackson's popularity caught on fire. Calls came in from all over the world asking him to speak as he tried to space them out around Maggie's requests and his obligations. He was dedicated to his jewelry, being his first passion after Laura and Maggie, who were fascinated by his work.

Maggie and Jackson spent hours in the walk-out basement, sitting quietly in the sunlight filtered by tall evergreens while crafting their deepest treasures. Jackson would let her drop the blue stone into the eye of the wolf pendants. She cherished her job.

"We should organize a gallery showing for your art," said Jackson, as he marveled at the raw talent perched on the tall stool beside him. "When we get back from Mexico, we'll do that, maybe in Vancouver?"

"West Vancouver," she said. "They can afford my work and they will like my style. We'll need the cash for the children."

Do I dare ask he thought? Nah. It'll show itself sooner or later. Just flow, like Victor said. Flow and let it unfold. That feels better already.

"We pick your mom up tomorrow. Are you packed?"

"I don't pack. I have a bag. I will put some stuff in it and go. We're not going far."

"Maggie, we're flying on a plane a thousand miles into Mexico for three weeks. I showed it to you on the map. You might need more than you realize."

She sifted through the precious gemstones. "Mexico is close. Searle is far away, and even then, it's close when you know how to get there."

Jackson put down his tools and thought about Maggie's statement, realizing the word 'different' was not powerful enough to describe her. He was in the presence of an entity that was light years beyond him, and he could feel her energy rise daily. She had connections to worlds he could only imagine, and even then he felt foolish trying. There she was, sitting and painting, right in front of him, a tiny humble creature that Great Grandmother spoke of having the capacity to alter life on this planet. But how? Don't be attached to the results.

Jackson and Maggie squealed and jumped when they saw Laura walking out of the airport terminal the next day. The chatter in the truck home was endless. Laura was excited for Jackson, and everyone felt they were headed to Mexico for reasons beyond the conference. Maggie was happy they were beginning to understand.

Victor had a gourmet meal ready and everyone shared the perfect evening. Jackson and Laura retired early and crawled into bed, face-to-face and fully talked out, knowing they barely had six hours before the alarm rang. He kissed her gently, and the door opened. A sleepy little child crawled in between them and succumbed to the dream world.

"Sometimes she's just a little girl," said Laura. "These are the memories I cherish. She may be our baby genetically, but she belongs to humanity first, and I'm okay with that. Someone said to me the other day that we only 'borrow our children, we don't own them'. She was right."

The Vancouver Airport was dark as the flight to Mexico boarded at 5am. Maggie huddled in her seat at takeoff, staring out the window the entire trip. "I wish Annok could see this," she said. "He would love to go to Mexico. He has ancestors there."

Victor sat across the aisle. Maggie leaned over Jackson and Laura to speak to him. "I guess this isn't your usual style of travel?"

He smiled back. "I would have left earlier and met you there," he said, "but someone has to cook, and no one can match my skills in a kitchen." He turned, closed his eyes and remained silent for the rest of the flight.
