PROMPT: Dwalin has to ask Thorin for his blessing to court you since you are Thorin's sister.

The sun had set long before Dwalin and Thorin were sitting in front of a kindling fire, watching as the flames sputtered in the pit that contained them. Flakes of fiery orange and red turned black in the air and caught in the beards of both of the men. A silence had settled over them seeing as it was after dinner and they were stuffed and warm; it was the perfect combination to create a cozy feeling throughout the whole room. The only disturbance came from a muffled argument occurring between Fili and Kili in another room. With their small spats being such a common occurrence, Thorin only puffed out smoke from his pipe and chuckled every now and then at the ruckus that they caused.

Dwalin shuffled around in the chair that he was sitting in almost every other second, and he hardly focused his eyes on one thing for long. His chubby fingers tugged at the tip of his beard as if it would help his nerves to dissipate. There were the lingering thoughts in the back of his mind telling him that he was making a mountain out of a mole hill; he only had to ask Thorin one simple question. It wasn't as if Thorin would say no, they were like brothers after all! However, he just couldn't shake away the doubts running around in his head. They were the cause for his nerves, and they wouldn't go away no matter how hard he tried to suppress them.

"You've been awfully quiet," Thorin noted as he pulled his wooden and boxy pipe away from his mouth. His brows were furrowed which showed that he was pondering over the words for himself, analyzing his friend with narrowed eyes. He had noticed that something was off about Dwalin; he had hardly spoken to anyone at all throughout the dinner which practically never happened.

Dwalin sighed, tugging at his beard once more, "Yes, I suppose I have." His eyes danced around like the flames in the pit and he eventually found the right things to say, "I've been meaning to ask you something."

"And what would that be?" Thorin wondered. He followed Dwalin's gaze when he looked over and saw that the other dwarf wasn't holding eye contact. However, he was struggling to see what would be so captivating about the blank space of that wall that he was met with.

"Would you mind if I were to court your sister?"

Even the crackling of the fire seemed to die out with a sadness that fell upon the whole entire room. Thorin's mouth was only slightly parted with surprise, the pipe hanging loosely in his grip while he stared back at Dwalin with shock. Dwalin would have been driven insane by the silence if it weren't for the two boys still tussling in the other room. "I'm sorry, I don't think that I heard you correctly," Thorin drawled out the words, being careful with each one in order to add emphasis.

"I said," Dwalin began while after swallowing thickly, "Would you mind if I were to court your sister?"

"My sister?" Thorin laughed loudly after the silence had drawn out among them. Then, the joyous noise filled the whole entire dwelling and Thorin was wiping tears away along with the cackling. "Are you sure Kili didn't damage your mind when he hit you with that board the other day?" the words were only said after he had finally settled down.

"I'm being serious about this, Thorin," Dwalin huffed, crossing his arms over his chest much like a child that had been told that they couldn't have candy. Thorin sobered up at the statement. "Y/N is very kind, and very beautiful."

"She's very stubborn and bigheaded I'd say," Thorin chuckled, thinking back to childhood memories where you had pulled his hair and gotten him in trouble on many occasions. Of course, you were his sister, so he always had to tease you and make a joke of your mannerisms. At the end of the day, the scuffles and fights had only brought you closer, and his joking was really a cover for his slight hesitation in giving Dwalin his approval.

"Oh, stuff it," it was the first time that Dwalin had smiled during the conversation, and he shoved Thorin along with the playful command. Of course, Dwalin knew that Thorin would have reservations about the courtship. He just hoped that they would be eased by the knowledge that Dwalin would never cause you any harm. "You know I'd treat her right, Thorin," it was only said after the joking air had left the atmosphere.

Thorin nodded slowly, "Yes, I know that you would." Then, there was a sigh. "I guess that I would only be seen as the villain if I didn't let you pursue her." Dwalin's smile widened to an impossible size and he let out a happy little laugh. Thorin looked to him through the corner of his eyes as his own grin stretched his lips and he went back to dragging in a puff from his pipe. Little clouds of smoke left his mouth when he laughed along with Dwalin. "But if you hurt her I will kill you during our quest to the Lonely Mountain," he warned with that chuckling hanging off of the threat. He intended on following through with it if Dwalin ever dared to, but he doubted that the other dwarf would.

Heyo, been a while since I updated this! To FangirlOrder66, to whom this is dedicated to, I must apologize. It had been a whirlwind of homework for me since my school was under construction and we had extra work loud while we were out. Hopefully this is good enough and I hope that you all enjoy!
