I S L A

I’M YANKED awake by a loud bust at the door. Something smashes, probably a door. Instantly, I jerk up but fall back when an excruciating pain moves down my spine. What’s happening?

I try to move to no avail. I’ve still not recovered from the massive loss of blood. I’m surprised I haven’t passed out yet. Heavy footsteps echo in the house. There’s a loud bang, then a manly voice says, “Clear!”

     “All clear,” another says.

I feel a tingle in my hands. They’ve found me. I thought they wouldn’t. A smile forms on my face. I hear indistinct conversations, then it becomes louder. The door swings open and uniformed men storm inside cradling huge firearms.

They match toward the bed. The leading agent stares down at me and says, “Are you Isla?”

I bob my head and watch as other agents rush to my bedside.

“We’ve found her,” he says into the radio on his shoulder.
