A few hours after school ended I was sitting on the couch watching the Long Pond Studio Sessions on Disney+, barely focusing on the TV. I was lost in thought. What could Jake be thinking about.. where was Zander? I heard the key turn in the door.. I looked up to see Luke and Zander bustling in fast with what seemed like a thousand shopping bags.

H- why so many bags? Where were you guys?
Z- we left early, to go to the mall for the dance Friday night
H- what dance?
Z- what do you mean what dance! Everyone has been talking about it all day!
H- I wasn't told about anything!
L- it was on the announcements this morning... we're you not paying attention?
H- I walked with Milly, we were a bit late. We missed the announcements and that's all.
L- but Milly knew.
H- huh. UNLESS!
Z- unless what?
H- she got asked out~
Z- oh yeah! That garden boy!
L- must be it.
H- let's call her!

I squealed as I dialed Milly's number into my cellphone. I put her on speaker

M- hello?
H-  how come you knew about that dance?
M- uhh...
H- hmm?
M- OK FINE! Elliot asked me to the dance!! In fact I was just about to call you Hailey, I need help dress shopping... I'm not that good at dress picking.
H- I'll be there! So exciting! (squeal)
M- (squeal) AHH! See you there!!

She hung up.

H- I should make theories for a living
L- yet you couldn't find out about the dance on your own.
H- true.. I'll get there!
Everyone-( laugh)
H- SHH! It's my favorite song!!
Z- you're watching this again!
H- SHHH

I hummed to the tune of Betty then I heard singing from next to me

🎶L- I showed up at your party~🎶
🎶L&Z- will you have me? Will you love me?~🎶

I couldn't help but join

🎶All 3- Would you kiss me on the porch in front of all your stupid friends? If you kiss me, will it be just like I dreamed it? Will it patch your broken wings? I'm only 17 I don't know anything.🎶

🎶H- but I know I miss youuuu~ 🎶

H- Hey! you stopped singing!

And then I saw why. They were kissing.
I threw a pillow at them

H- Get a room.

The description of My Tears Ricochet was playing in the background so I paused the TV

H- GUYS!
Z- oh sorry
L- (laugh)
H- whatever lovebirds.

And that's when I heard a knock on the door. An escape! Now in my head I was hoping and praying it was Jake. I opened the door to see my wonderful BFF Milly.

H- I thought I was coming to you!
M- what's the fun in that?

The TV started playing again and I heard the boys singing My Tears Ricochet

M- have they became you?
H- I really don't know.
M- let's get outta here
H- let me grab my bag and my phone, wanna come with? It's a bit chilly.
M- yeah no problem!

🎶L&Z- AND IF I'M DEAD TO YOU, WHY ARE YOU AT THE WAKE? CURSING MY NAME, WISHING I STAYED. LOOK AT HOW MY TEARS RICOCHET!🎶

Milly busted out laughing

M (yell)- HEY EMOS!!
Z(yell)- ITS A GOOD SONG OKAY?!
M(yell)- SURE!
H-(gasp) HOW COULD YOU SAY SURE!?
M- Sarcasm~!
H- let's just go
H (yell)- WE'LL BE BACK IN A BIT! DON'T GO ALL REPUTATION ON US WHEN WE GET BACK
M- Lol why though! They'd make great back up dancers for her!
H- don't even make me imagine Zander in those outfits!
M- Lol he'd look amazing.
H- I was thinking the opposite (laugh)

We ran out the door, and over to one of the cars, I had a license I just didn't have my own car, so I never drove to school.

(At the mall)
H- ooh look at this one Milly!
M- ooh! You should try that one on!
H- we're shopping for you today!
M- right. I'll just have the lady hold this so we can come back tomorrow for you to try it on.
H- really? You'd do that?
M- NO! Of course not now C'mon!
H- fine.

I tried on the burgundy dress, it had a slit up the leg and the sleeves were off the shoulders with the neckline coated in glitter.

M- OMG.
H- I mean..
M- you're Gorg!
H- I dunno, it's a bit out of my comfort zone.
M- and when it comes to these things you need to step out of your comfort zone! It's a dance for god's sake!
H- what kind of dance is it anyway?
M-nothing special, that's in spring. For now it's a formal dance to celebrate that one random warm week in February.
H- I love that week.
M- well it's supposed to be in the 70's (Fahrenheit) tomorrow!
H- damn!
M- perfect week eh?
H- definitely. We're gonna make the best out of it.
M- PERIODT!
H- you know what why not! It's not to expensive, and it's cute!
M- that's the spirit!
H- now back to you missy.
M- yeah.. right

(The next day)

Just like yesterday me and Milly walked to school together, and we're actually early today!  She told me to walk to the soccer field with her. Apparently she's meeting up with Elliot to discuss colors near here. I sat on the bleachers alone waiting for her to come back. I pulled my phone out and started scrolling Instagram reading all the girl's posts about their dresses and their dates. That's when it hit me, I had a Boyfriend, but he hadn't asked me to the dance..
Plus he was smiling at his phone a lot yesterday

H- SNAP OUT OF IT HAILEY, you're paranoid!

I yelled at myself like some psycho. When I felt a tap on my shoulder that made me jump.

H- AHH! Who's there?
J- sorry didn't mean to startle you.
H- oh, it's- WAIT! Why we're you ignoring me yesterday? And leaving before chem? Not cool, you know how that teacher is!
J- it was for a good reason.
H- explain.
J- come with me.
H- ok?

(Just kidding lol) you really thought I died?

I followed him around the corner and next thing I know glitter and confetti are flying at me at high speeds. I waited until the dusty feeling left my face to open my eyes. There it was, Jake there with flowers acting like this was prom standing in front of me with Milly and Elliot behind him

H- (cough) you guys!
J- so what do you say?

I looked at him, his smile was so hopeful, and definitely cute.. I was in awe. I wrapped my arms around the back of his neck so I was close to his face and I smiled

H- of course.

He smiled and picked me up in the air like he'd won the lottery. I couldn't help but giggle at his child-like excitement. That's when I remembered

H- Wait!

It looked like his heart stopped.

H- does Zander know
Z- ahem. Over here.
H- oh, didn't see you there

I looked back at Jake and smiled again.

H- what? Did you want to die? Cause I know I don't!

Jake looked at me with a playful I understand smirk.

In that moment my life felt perfect.
Absolutely perfect.
