chapter 14: I lie

Hanji leaned over her chair and looked at the floor, nodding along at my words.

A big sigh escaped her lips, finally looking up at me.

"It's okay, Marlene" They smiled, "I understand"

"I just.. I just don't want this to affect our friendship, Han."

"It won't"

"I know it won't but," I scratched the back of my head, "Gah.. dammit"

"You're not good with words" Hanji pointed out

"I know." I dropped my head in defeat.

"Are you.." Hanji paused, "Do you like someone?"

My ears perked up and cocked an eyebrow towards her, "What? No.. No I don't like anyone"

Hanji glance at me and sighed, "Don't lie to me, Mar"

"I'm not, Han"

"I know when you lie." They reached their hand towards the side of my head and pulled on my ear, "Your ears get red when you lie."

I scoffed, she knows me better than I thought.

"Okay.. you caught me," I frowned, "I'm sor-"

"Don't apologize" Hanji quickly added

"No, I will apologize."

"It's not your fault Mar, I shouldn't have done that without warning"

I stayed quiet, so did Hanji. We stared at the floor and avoided each other's eye contact. After a couple minutes of awkward silence, Hanji spoke up.

"So, who is this person you like?"

The question caught me off guard, unsure of what to say. Should I remain quiet? Lie? Or say the truth?

"It's someone you know." I muttered

"Hm, really?" Hanji smirked

"Yes"

"Can you tell me who?"

I stayed quiet. The answer was pretty self explanatory, no, not yet anyway.
