A/N: I know it's a bit late for a New Years story, but better late than never! I was having Niall feels today. Enjoyyy :)
It was new years eve, and I was spending it with my best friend in the whole world, Niall. We were sitting in his flat alone, watching movies and waiting for midnight to come. I checked my phone for a second to see how long until midnight, and then realized that we had already missed it!
"Niall, it's ten minutes past midnight! Happy new year!" I exclaimed, giving him a big hug.
"Wow, guess we lost track of time. Happy new year, y/n! Wouldn't want to spend it with anyone else." Niall responded, smiling sweetly at me.
"Aw Niall, you're so cheesy. But thanks, love you too." I laughed.
I suddenly got a call from an unknown number, so I excused myself from the living room and went into the kitchen to take it.
"Hello?"
"Y/n I gotta tell you something and you're not gonna like it." The man on the other end of the line said.
"Who's this?" I asked.
"Andy." He responded.
Ohh, Andy. Andy is my ex-boyfriend, Rob's, best friend. Rob and I have been dating on and off for about a year now. We still text and talk on the phone all the time and always say "I love you" before we hangup, but because we live far away things got too complicated to still be a couple.
"Oh hey Andy. What happened?" I asked, a little worried.
"Umm..Rob and I were at some new years party and at midnight, Rob kissed some random girl. I just thought I should be a good friend and tell you because I'm not really sure if your still dating or whatever..." Andy said.
My heart shattered into a million pieces. How could he?! All this time when he's told me he still loves me, was it all just a big lie?
"Oh..thanks for telling me Andy. Why'd he do it?" Was all I said.
"He said something like 'I just felt something, I don't know what, so I went for it.' Not quite sure what he meant by that. Hope this doesn't upset you too much."
"N-No I'm totally fine no worries. Thanks for being a good friend." I said, holding back tears.
"Of course. And if anyone asks, you didn't hear it from me." Andy said.
"Yup. Happy new years, Andy."
"Happy new years." He responded, and with that I hung up.
I set my phone down, jumped up on top of the island to sit, and broke down in tears. I was sitting there for a few minutes with my head in my hands, trying to calm myself down, when I felt a hand on my leg. I looked up to see Niall standing in front of me, his eyes full of worry.
"Y/n, baby, what happened?" Niall asked.
He grabbed a few tissues and started wiping my tears away.
"Rob got a new years kiss with some girl." I said, bursting into tears again.
Niall spread my legs apart and stood between them, pulling me into a hug and holding my head against his chest.
"Shh, it's okay love. I'm here for you." Niall said, kissing my forehead.
Niall has always been so sweet to me. Deep down, I've always had a thing for him, but I've never wanted to ruin our friendship by admitting it.
"Y/n can I tell you something?" Niall asked nervously.
I looked up at him with tear-filled eyes and nodded.
