Chapter 42

A Sacrifice

Jason's POV

The echo of the single shot had my body stiffening like old piece of bread. Just like me all the officers glanced back at the house unable to ignore the sound they probably gotten use to.

He has a gun and he just used it. Could he have.... I gulped feeling my throat tighten with the small movement. Both my uncle and Pete turned worried glances at me as I gripped the hood of the truck needing the support at the moment.

"Jason relax son the police are doing all they can." Jack assured me

Jack just arrived not to long ago maybe five minutes or less. He wasted no time after I texted him, dropping the diner after making sure Tom and Liam would watch the girl's along with the two guards at the front of the diner. At least Sarah and Jackie are safely away from this maniac.

"I can't just stand here." I said as I stared at the large house helplessly

Shadows danced behind the now pulled down curtains, leaning forward I could barely make out the two figures that seemed to be side by side. That's good, their both still on their feet which means Gracie is okay. For now.

"That's it." I huffed exasperated by the lack of work being done by the multiple officers just standing around like lost sheep

"What are you doing?" my uncle asked as I pushed past a quizzical looking Pete

"I'm going to get in there and get my woman." I declared as I paused unsure of how I was going to get it or what I'd do when I miraculously get in without being noticed

Jack rolled his eyes as if I were some over dramatic teenager. In slow long strides he was standing in front of me his forehead crinkled with the new profound stress of these past few weeks. Guilt stroke my heart as I now concerned the unneeded drama on my uncle.

The diner reports, my many managers constantly calling in for weekly updates, lawyers confirming the paperwork I asked for. The legal paperwork for my parent's house had to be looked over and than the investigation on Ben. The security system being installed, guards at every corner where either Gracie or Sarah were. All of these factors seemed to just fly right by me so easily.

"Jason think this through you go into that house and than what? You get shot or Gracie." he said squinting showing the newly creases at the sides of his eyes

He's right. God damn it he's right.

"Jack I don't know what to do? I feel like no matter what I do I'll end up losing her. I mean I was suppose to protect her and I let her down, she trusted in me to keep her safe." I stopped feeling my throat close up

I failed Gracie, I failed the woman I love. Shoving my hand through my hair I gave the dark strands a rough pull as if they were the source of the problem. All of the business over that past few weeks were all meant to lead to a perfect moment when I surprise her with me staying in Vensword, I've been working my butt off in hopes speeding up the process but it seems I have bad timing.

"It's okay to be scared Jason, we all want to see her come out of there safely but it's not your fault." Jack assured me as he patted my shoulder in a fatherly like manner

Gulping down the thick lump lodged in my throat I said "I know it's just I should have known he wouldn't give up so quickly."

"No one knew." Pete piped in

He has a point but damn I should have...... I don't know what I should have done but I'm sure there is something I could have changed or thought of.
