In an immortal society where powers called aptitudes and birth laws dominate everyday life, E was illegally born. Like all the other illegally born children, after her birth she was sent away and trained to be one of society's workers. Any sense of individuality was taken from her. From their clothes to their haircuts there is nothing to distinguish one illegally born person from another-they aren't even given proper names. So when E and a few of her classmates are finally given the opportunity to go out into society that claims to be supportive of self-love and valuing others, they are in for a shock. Because while the real world has colors, luxury, and so many other wonders that are stolen from illegal borns, it also has the Noiettes, the legally born members of society. Who, in many cases, would do anything to keep their luxuries away from the people that they do not deem fit.
