The Great Escape
I woke up feeling dizzy
Not knowing where I am.
My stomach twirled sickly
I wanted to hurl on the floor.
The room felt familiar
A hazy shadow from the past
My head hurt from the fall
A nasty bump had grown.
My hands were bound
So were my feet
A gag tied tightly over my mouth
Preventing me from making a sound.
I tried to listen
But heard not a sound
Painfully I drifted back
To dreaming about BG town.
Hands tied not so tight
a little friction, soon loose
My feet the same,
meeting the same fate
I was free, CG was next,
try to escape and get back home,
no idea where we are,
an old house it seems
The newspaper lady's hands
tightly bound, a knot very complex,
would take time to untie her
A broken kitchen knife, I soon found,
helped in getting her free,
not as sharp but better than bare hands
Hoping Ewell won't check on us,
tied up again, we would be.
Bella freed my hands
And with her broken knife
I loosen the corner floorboard
Digging out the dirt
I found the hidden box
That once contain a copy
Of the deed to this land.
I grabbed the colt and the ammo
Praying it wasn't jammed
We peered over the stovetop
Out the window, we saw two men
Ewell tending his horse
The other sitting on a rock.
We couldn't escape outback
The path led to the desert
There was no way out .... Damn!
He had my dagger,
A gift it was, from my father
A family heirloom
I had to get it back
From the man who
Sat on the rock.
CG whispered in my ear
A plan she had thought
With a nod, I agreed.
I took the same spot on the floor,
Broken knife and rope hidden
Behind my back.
"Help! Save us! Help!"
I yelled, pretending to be tied.
Cursing loudly, he came in
and opened the door wide.
Quickly from behind the door
I whacked him on the head
With the butt of my gun.
He stumbled forward
and I grabbed his gun.
Then I shoved him hard
his face met the floor.
Bella sat on his back
And bound his hand
So, he couldn't attack.
"Wallace! What's going on?"
Ewell yelled almost at the door.
I fired at his leg to stall him
He screamed falling on one knee
His bullet struck the door frame
While I emptied mine in his heart.
My dagger I have to take
But first I have to tie him
Before he wakes.
The rope, it's around his wrist
But he throws me off
Defeated I cannot be,
I can't give up, I have to win
I cannot die, I have to return
to my horses and to my Brody.
The rope is almost undone
"I am going to kill you"
He struggles to untie the final knot
Near my foot, is my dagger
I grab it and lunge at him
The dagger pierces his skin
While his body slumps back dead.
Exhausted we stood by the gate
Tired from the bloodshed.
"Now what?" Bella asked
I handed her the reins
"First we go to Carson City
Then it's home to BG"
