Servant's entrance, Downton Abbey

Elsie was still somewhat in shock. Charlie had yet to take his eyes off the foreigner. Miss O'Brien, well Mrs Goswami now, smirked at them. "Aren't you going to invite us in?" Charlie fumbled with his words, and invited them in. Mr Goswami smiled, his pearly white teeth showing. "I am so honoured to finally meet you Mr Carson, Sarah has told me great things about you." He reached to shake Charlie's hand.

Charlie took it graciously, but seemed slightly puzzled by his accent. Miss O'Brien smiled, "Mahesh's mother is an english heiress but when she married Mahesh's father her family disowned her, thus explaining why Mahesh had to work for Lord and Lady Flintshire." Mr Goswami smiled again and kissed Elsie's hand. "I believe congratulations are in order, on your wedding plans. We hope to attend, if you'd allow us."

Mahesh was clearly more softly spoken and mannerly than his wife. Daisy nudged Mr Patmore, "how did Miss O'Brien trick him into marrying her?" She whispered. Mrs Patmore stifled her chuckle, "now Daisy, that's not very kind". "She's just saying what we're all thinking" Thomas added, not taking his eyes from his former smoking partner for a second.

"Welcome to Downton, and thank you, Mr... ahh.." Charlie said. Mahesh seemed to constantly be smiling.

"Goswami"

"Gos...?"

"Just call me Mahesh"

"Ahhh..."

"George then, it's my middle name."

"George, the name of the child heir of Downton" Charlie mused. Sarah Goswami rolled her eyes. "You don't have to make allowances for him you know. Mahesh Goswami isn't impossible to pronounce." Mahesh (or George, whatever you want to call him) took his wife's hand and kissed it, "It doesn't matter dear, we're here now. The grand house of Downton Abbey."

The Library, Downton Abbey

Edith was met by a brief "Hello" from her mother, a glare from her sister and nothing from her father. Basically her usual greeting. This time there wasn't even Carson to open the door for her, and she had to ring twice before someone came to take her bags.

"Did I miss anything while I was gone?" She queried. Mary looked up from her magazine. "Why, were you gone somewhere? I didn't notice." Cora wasn't even bothered enough to correct Mary's cruel attitude. Simon was still on her mind, he left early that morning, but was bound to invite himself again quite soon. Simon was also on Robert's mind, he was getting increasingly worried about Cora leaving him.

Edith surveyed the room. "I went to dinner with a man I barely know last night." Nothing, they didn't even look up. "We spent the night together, it was like one of those unsuitable novels." Still nothing. "I just found out that I have two days left to live". Robert looked up slightly. "Oh, Edith you're back!" Edith swallowed. "Yes, yes I am."

The Dowager House

Violet was going out for luncheon, for the first time in a long time. This was of course the perfect chance for Spratt and Denker to make peace and 'bond'. The Dowager was barely out the door when Denker pulled out the whiskey (from, Spratt noticed, a highly unprofessional location on her person).

"How are we going to do this?" Spratt asked. Denker shrugged, "I don't know, want a drink?" In normal circumstances Spratt would decline, but he wanted to keep this job, and peace making seemed so much easier while fueled with alcohol. Gladys Denker was always the one to spark conversation. Now however, she seemed to have run out of interesting topics. Then something sprang to mind, it was boring but it was all she had. "Tell me, how'd you come to work here?"

Edith's room, Downton Abbey

Edith lay on the bed, staring at the ceiling. She may as well have been invisible. Her mother barely noticed her, her sister despised her, and her father didn't seem to acknowledge her existance at all. Tom was gone, Rose, Sybil, Matthew and dear Michael. She couldn't tell anyone that she was a mother, and even if she did no one would care.

Then there was David. He listened to her, noticed her, complemented her, talked to her. He was young, handsome and charming. He filled her with happiness. But, she lived here, at Downton, with a family that didn't love her, and nothing but cold walls to comfort her. She could be someone in London, with David by her side.

A part of her wanted to take Marigold and move to London for good. Sadly she lacked the necessities of money and a place to stay. If David felt them same way about her as she did him, then there could be a chance of happiness in London, in the future. She felt a slight feeling of betrayal, that she had forgotten about Michael. She hadn't, and never would, especially because of Marigold.

Edith lay on the bed , staring at the ceiling. She thought about David. She dreamed of another life. She cried for her lack of love. She wept tears of sorrow for the happiness she was continually denied.

Downstairs, Downton Abbey

Mr Goswami was a hit. Everyone liked him. No one could understand why he married Sarah, but right now no one was very bothered about it. Thomas was brooding, as usual. He had yet to speak to Sarah privately, but he noticed a change in her. She was still reasonably sour, but it was masked by this strange 'happiness' that she had adopted.

Even during conversation the couple stopped to exchange loving looks and smiles. Their hands were almost always interlaced and they kissed when they thought no one was around. Mahesh was charming and handsome, mannerly and kind. The perfect husband. He was telling the group of enthralled maids about the beauties of India and Sarah sat adoringly beside him.

Thomas took his chance. "Come for a smoke?" He asked Sarah. She looked up and smiled awkwardly. "I don't smoke anymore Thomas. But I'll come out for some fresh air." She stood and walked outside with him. This was bad. Her journey to India had changed Sarah O'Brien more than anyone could imagine. "Since when have you stopped?"

"I don't know, a few months after going to India"

"What was it like over there?"

"Hot. But beautiful, fragrant. Amazing. And of course how I met Mahesh".

"You never told us."

" I was going to, but I didn't see the point. I didn't know that I'd ever come back here."

" But you are here. Why?"

"I heard that Mrs Hughes and Mr Carson were getting married, and we were only working at Mahesh's father's spice stall. I suppose it was presumptuous of me to think I could get my old job back and find something for Mahesh, but I served Her Ladyship well."

"Besides leaving in the middle of the night without handing in your notice and killing her son. Yeah, you served her wonderfully." Thomas said, puffing smoke into the afternoon sunshine. "Do not speak of that." Sarah snapped. Thomas shrugged. "It's the truth " "I thought you of all people would be glad to see me" she marched away.

Cora's bedroom

Mrs Hughes knocked on the door. "Yes?" Cora called. Elsie pushed the door open. "I have some news." Cora sat up straighter. "Miss O'Brien has returned." Cora's eyebrows arched. "Where is she?" Sarah stepped into view. "Here m'lady." Cora narrowed her eyes and dismissed Elsie.

Sarah took a deep breath. " Explain yourself." Cora ordered. Sarah began her story, from Lady Flintshire's offer to arriving back at Downton with Mahesh. Cora listened. When Sarah was finished, Cora sighed. "You have served me well, and I am happy for you and your husband. But, I have a new lady's maid. I cannot simply fire her because you have made a reappearance. You may stay until I have reached a decision." Sarah nodded in thanks.

Sarah was not gone long when Cora reached for the bell.

Soon Denker and Spratt were intoxicated. They laughed for no apparent reason and were sprawled across the settee, Gladys sitting on Spatt's lap. She took another sip of whiskey and relaxed. Suddenly Spratt reached for her hand. "Gladys?" He asked. "Yes?" She asked, turning to face him. He looked into her eyes for a moment before leaning in and kissing her. To his surprise and relief, she kissed him back.

Downstairs, Downton Abbey

Miss Baxter hid in her room and cried. She was sure to loose her job. Her Ladyship clearly preferred Mrs Goswami and with a stealing record there was no question of who she would keep. The worst part of loosing this job would be loosing Joseph. She was in love with him and being separated from him would break her heart beyond repair.

She was trying to be quiet, but she didn't even hear the knock on the door though her own sobs. Mr Moseley poked his head around the door. "Phyllis?" She hastily dried her eyes and painted on a smile. He didn't believe it though. "What is it?" He asked gently, wrapping an arm around her as he sat beside her.

She began to cry again. "I'm afraid of loosing my job. I'm afraid of loosing you." She whispered into his shoulder. Joseph pulled her closer to him. He knew what he had to do. He had planned to do it on the night of Mrs Hughes and Mr Carson's wedding, but now was the best time. He kissed her forehead and gently pried her from him.

Then he did it. He knelt on the floor and took her hand. "Will you marry me?" He asked hopefully. Phyllis blinked in disbelief. She jumped up. "Yes! Yes of course! Of course I will marry you.." she laughed and pulled him up, pressing a kiss to his lips.
