Chapter 18 – The Professors Cabin
The campus was windy as they made their way across. Unfortunately, not much communication was made. Nathan and Jasmine were walking together hand in hand. Jonah and Giselle walked slowly behind them. There were moments that she'd look across the campus at the nature around her.
How could such a beautiful campus seem so gloomy?
It was almost as if she thought too soon. As if out of thin air, Isaac appeared. Their eyes met briefly. It was almost as if the campus didn't seem as dark anymore. In his nonchalant stare was a look of annoyance. Giselle, the queen of rebellious nature, was sneaking off yet again.
The four, now in front of a fifth person stood silent. Jonah and Isaac's eyes met briefly. Neither of them said a word.
"The weather is nice." Nathan said. "I mean, at least the sun is out."
Isaac glanced at him for a moment.
"Yeah, I mean it looks like a great day on campus." Jasmine added. "Right?"
"No." Isaac said. "And I'd love to continue this charade but there are far more important things at hand."
Jonah swallowed hard. "Like?"
Isaac glanced at Giselle then, "Where are you running off to?"
"The Professors cabin." Giselle muttered. "We have a plan."
Isaac nodded. "When did you plan on telling me this? After?"
"I guess."
"Can I talk to you in private." Isaac said. "Now."
Jonah laughed.
Isaac glared at him. "I don't find this amusing."
Giselle and Isaac walked three feet away from the group. There was a brief hesitation. Giselle glanced at Jonah for a moment. His arms were folded and he looked a bit annoyed. She understood why.
"After everything we have been through." He muttered. "You're still doing things behind my back."
"This isn't about you Isaac." She replied.
"And him?" He muttered. "You're going to just walk freely with him after everything that has happened?"
Giselle rolled her eyes. "Lets not forget about the time we saved you, Isaac."
Isaac paused for a moment.
"You can come with us." She added.
Isaac shook his head. "See me afterwards."
He walked away. Giselle watched him a bit taken aback. For a moment she thought about chasing after him, but she didn't. She could see him slowly disappearing into the trees as the minutes passed. Jasmine met her side then, as if reading her mind.
As much as it felt wrong to do anything without Isaac's approval, she also felt as if she didn't need it. Deep down Giselle knew how she felt about Isaac, they shared a special bond and loved each other deeply. But she also didn't want to spend the rest of her years asking or telling Isaac what she needed or wanted to do. She knew he was nonchalant about most things and her invititation was clear. She wondered why he would even say no.
"Well, on the bright side the food court still has a sale on biscuits." Nathan said meeting Jasmines side. "If we hurry we can actually do both."
Giselle smirked. "I think we can do both."
"Biscuits are gross." Jonah added. "Especially the ones at the food court."
"Too bad Jonah," Jasmine said. "Too freaking bad."
The food court was full with opportunists and students studying. Some had their heads in books while others pretended to study. Giselle imagined there was a major exam coming up but quickly put the thought aside when she noticed a women staring at her through her textbook.
For a moment she thought of Isaac, she wondered if what they had was worth all the drama. There were times she couldn't be so sure. She also wondered how long they would continue to fight over the same thing. She invited him along, why would he decline? Why couldn't he possibly get over the rivalry with Jonah?
When they sat, there was a brief silence. Jasmine spoke with Nathan for a while, Jonah made some slight commentary. Giselle hesitated in adding to conversation. She wondered why and how everything they had been through, she still felt as if something was missing.
Isaac wasn't there.
She wanted him included, but she often wondered if that should even be.
"Popularity sucks." Nathan said. "That girl over there has been looking over here for hours."
"We've been here for ten minutes." Jasmine added. "Let's not exaggerate."
"I hope she at least pays for lunch." Nathan replied. "I mean, if you're going to stare you could at least pay for our meal."
"You guys haven't even chose anything from the food court yet." Giselle muttered.
"Well Jasmine is the picky eater." Nathan added, "I'm waiting on her."
"You know for saving his life he sure is unappreciative." Jonah butted in. "Isaac, I mean."
Giselle remained silent for a moment. "He's just choosing to stay out of it."
"Can we not bring drama to the table?" Jasmine replied. "And for the record, I'm getting buiscuits."
"Same here." Nathan added. "And for the record, let's not ruin our meal with this tit for tat drama."
The table had grown quiet just as Nathan and Jasmine began to get their meal. There was an eerie silence in the room, almost as if the entire room knew about their conversation. Giselle decided to leave Jonah alone as well, knowing that someone had mentioned a deal on sandwiches in one of her classes.
Jonah did not go after her, because he knew he couldn't say anything to change the situation. He had feelings for Clea. She had feelings for Isaac. What more could he possibly say?
And as soon as he thought it, was as soon as the thought was cancelled. He followed Giselle. Not because he liked her, but because he was her friend. The people in the food court watched, some smiled. He wondered if rumors would spread around campus about this outing. He had to remind himself that he was single.
Giselle was buying a sandwich at the counter when Jonah met her side. It was believed to be turkey and swiss cheese from the label. It looked disgusting but he didn't mention it.
They made eye contact for a moment.
"You didn't have to follow me."
"Didn't want you to be lonely while you pay for your sandwich."
Giselle rolled her eyes before paying for her meal with a gold card. Jonah noticed it but didn't ask. Gold cards were a privilege known for very special people on campus. He knew of Giselle's outstanding ability but had no idea she was walking around with one of the most luxurious zeptorian cards. Her dad must have awarded her with one once he showed up.
In fact, Giselle tried declining his help and saying she rather just ordered the free food that came with coming to the food court from time to time. Included menus on each table meant you could just tap away and order from a selected menu. Nicholas Riley did not like the sound of that. If he was going to be in her life now well that meant she deserved the absolute best and to order whatever she wanted.
Gold card it is.
Nathan winked from the table as Giselle and Jonah made their way over. Jasmine looked unamused as she picked at a biscuit. Jonah and Giselle sat side by side. She offereded him half her sandwich. He declined before grabbing a biscuit off of Nathans plate. Nathan opened his mouth to say something but shut it when he saw Jasmine rolling her eyes.
There was a silence for a moment. No one said a word. Giselle wanted to speak but she felt an awkwardness within her. An awkwardness that she didn't know how to describe. If Jonah, Giselle and Isaac could all move passed everything that happened in the past, there was a possibility they could all be friends.
Isaac, however, would not allow that. His pride was almost as big as his love for her. Giselle wished she wasn't in between. She wondered if things would always be this way. Would her love life always be separate from her friendships?
"So I think, next time, we should vow not to save him." Jonah muttered. "I mean that would be the right thing to do."
"Or, we could talk about something else." Jasmine replied.
"Yeah like, what's the plans for tonight." Nathan added. "So we show up to the professors cabin ready to kick ass or?"
"There has to be something in particular we're looking for." Jonah muttered.
"We'll know when we find it." Giselle replied. "For now, let's enjoy lunch."
