"MC~" Lucio called out as he tossed his head back in boredom.
The young apprentice looked over their shoulder to see the Count draped dramatically over the chaise lounge.
"What is it, Lucio?" They asked as they once again faced the bookshelf in the library, running their fingers across the spins, looking for new magical reference materials.
"I'm boooored~" He whined.
MC sighed, and turned around, hands folded over their chest, slightly annoyed at his incessant whining.
"And what exactly do you want me to do about that?" They asked, shifting their weight onto one leg.
"I dunno~" He replied.
MC scoffed and pulled a few books from the shelves and placed them down on the table next to them before seating themselves in the chair.
"Then go find something to do, Lucio, I'm going to sit here and go over these," They said waving a thick, worn book in the air.
"Uggh," Lucio groaned in disgust as he rolled over on the couch.
MC rolled their eyes and settled down with their books, trying to tune out whatever it was that Lucio was doing.
Even while they tried their hardest to ignore him, MC could still hear his shuffling about, his sighing and the occasional stimming.
They watched him stand and stretch out of their peripheral vision. He mumbled something to himself as he wandered about the Library, disappearing for a moment down one aisle of shelves, only to reappear on the other end.
He ran his gold claw gently across the spins of the books as he paced, which made a rather distracting clicking noise.
This mindless dawdling and muttering and clicking and noise-making then turned into whines of MC's names or pet names as Lucio begged for a moment of their attention.
With each call of their name, MC only huffed or sighed, reminding Lucio that they were otherwise occupied with important research and that he was the one who decided to join them in the library.
Slowly, the noise and the shuffling about wore the apprentice's patience ever thinner until finally...
SLAM!
Lucio's head snapped over in MC's direction, eyes wide and mouth slightly agape.
MC's hand was flat against the cover of a thick volume, quite obviously the source of the noise.
Their head was bent slightly over the table, their hair/headscarf hiding their face from Lucio's view. A dark and slightly menacing aura surrounded them.
"Uhh... MC?" Lucio asked meekly.
MC's eyes raised slightly to meet Lucio's gaze. Their face was cloaked in shadows, the only visible feature being their eyes which held a piercing glare.
Lucio's face whitened as MC slowly rose from their seat at the table. He heard them take a deep breath.
'...oh shit...' he thought, preparing for an earful from his significant other about the importance of their research or their sanity and peace of mind.
When MC exhaled and looked up directly at Lucio, their face was calm, a smile eerily on their lips.
"Lucio, darling, what is it that you so desperately needed my attention for?" They asked, their voice sickeningly sweet and polite.
Lucio swallowed thickly, unsure of what to do now that he finally had their attention, knowing full well that he should choose his next words carefully lest he suffer an irritated MC's rath.
"You've been working really hard, MC, I think you deserve a break," he offered, slowly walking closer until he was standing beside them.
He wrapped his arm around their shoulders and pulled them in for a hug.
"I'm sorry I was annoying you. I just wanted your attention because you've had your nose buried in books and research all week. I miiisss you~" He mumbled into their neck.
MC wrapped their arms around him and exhaled deeply as they buried their face in the crook of Lucio's neck.
"You're right, I'm sorry I lost my cool. And I'm sorry I haven't been paying much attention to you too. You've been sitting in the library with me pretty much all week. Why don't we go do something you want to do?" MC apologized.
Lucio quickly pulled away, a childish grin on his face.
"Really?!" He asked.
"Really," MC nodded.
"Ok!" Lucio exclaimed. "Let's go out for a ride then? I look so majestic on my horse,"
MC laughed at his confidence. "Alright. Now, let's get going before it gets too dark out."
MC and Lucio left the library and got changed into more appropriate attire.
They made their way down to the stables and readied their horses.
Lucio's horse was a white horse that stood tall and proud, not unlike its rider.
MC's horse was a rich brown, its coat silky smooth and soft.
The two mounted their steeds and rode off into the woods, Lucio taking the lead.
They talked idly as they rode, Lucio taking the opportunity to try and impress MC with stories of his great feats. They joked around and enjoyed riding through the forest, appreciating the sun that filtered gently through the leaves of the trees.
Before they knew it, they were deep in the heart of the forest, where the trees were dense and the paths were much less worn.
They found a nice clearing, where the sun cast an array of shadows on the ground as it passed the leaves.
The couple stopped and dismounted before hitching the horses to the trees.
They sat on a fallen log on the ground for a rest as they ate snacks and continued their discussions.
"And that's when - What was that? " MC cut themselves off at the rustling of leaves in the shrubbery.
"Oh, it's nothing but little wildlife, I'm sure," Lucio assured his partner.
MC nodded and continued talking until the horses began to whiney and stir, clearly unsettled.
Despite the weather being warm, the clearing was suddenly cold and dark, as if clouds had obstructed the sun and brought winter early. A cool, unforgiving breeze sent a chill down MC's spine, leaving the hairs on the back of their neck raised.
The rustling got louder as if whatever was in the plants was getting closer.
Soon, the dense foliage to the right was rustling from top to bottom, much too violently for any small creature to stir up.
MC cast their eyes to Lucio, who was standing, to see that his face was stern, his hand on the hilt of his sword, ready to brandish his blade at anything that might harm them.
They rose, standing at Lucio's side, ready for whatever might come out of the forest.
One moment there was nothing, and the next, a huge creature came barreling out of the woods, angry and out for blood.
The monster was huge, at least nine feet tall. Its body seemed to be made from twisted trunks of trees, and on its shoulders only a large skull, unlike any earthly creature. It radiated an angry and rabid bloodlust, with powerful magic that seeped from the cracks in its wood.
Lucio brandished his sword at the creature, putting on a brave face.
"Stand back, MC!" He bellowed. "I'll take care of this."
The creature attacked Lucio with its large wooden claws and the impact was only jarring to Lucio.
With every swing of his blade, Lucio was losing ground, his sword not slowing the creature at all.
The malicious and evil energy was enough to make any fall to their knees in fear.
The creature swiped its arm, and as Lucio went to block it, his blade embedded itself into the wood and was then ripped from his grasp, still lodged in the creature's arm.
The creature readied itself for the fatal blow, looming menacingly over Lucio.
Without a word, MC threw themselves in between their lover and the monster.
"MC, No!" Lucio cried, as MC stood in front of him, their arm outstretched.
He braced for an impact that never came.
Instead, a pair of wings spread from MC's back, casting the clearing in bright, white light and the creature roared, its malicious magic countered by MC's own as they smote the beast.
When the light dissipated, Lucio was left standing in awe at MC who stood over the creature, their wings folded against their back.
"MC..." Lucio murmured, getting MC to turn around to meet his gaze.
They quickly cast their eyes to the ground, afraid of what he might say.
"MC... You-You have wings..."
His jaw was slack as he starred at MC, who was rubbing their elbow and still studying the dirt and moss on the forest floor.
He was left completely speechless by their massive iridescent white and golden wings, which shone, even without the light of the sun.
When he regained his composure, he launched into a frenzy of compliments and praises.
"MC, that was incredible! You were so brave, just throwing yourself in front of that thing, killing it in an instant! You're absolutely incredible! And your wings! They're gorgeous, I had no idea you even had wings!"
MC stood there in shock as their lover prattled on about how amazing he found their wings, and how cool it is that his partner is an angel. Their cheeks flushed red as Lucio carried on.
When he had settled down a bit, they sat together on the log, and MC explained how they concealed the truth for fear that Lucio would reject them if he knew they were a supernatural creature.
"I was worried that you would think I'm a freak," they said as they pulled their wings close.
"Not at all!" Lucio exclaimed. "MC, they're just as beautiful and gorgeous as I am, I love them! And they look so soft!"
MC let out a choked laugh and smiled softly.
"C-can I touch them?" Lucio asked apprehensively, unsure if he was pushing boundaries.
"Uh, sure," MC agreed shyly as they slowly spread their wings out again.
Carefully, Lucio began to run his fingers through the feathers, being sure to keep his touch soft and gentle.
After a moment, MC began to relax and enjoy the relaxing feeling of Lucio's hands brushing the feathers softly.
Suddenly, he pulled away with a gasp, his face pale and fearful.
"I'm sorry!" He said. "I didn't hurt you did I?" He asked.
MC looked puzzled for a moment, unsure of what Lucio was talking about when they noticed a feather that had fallen to the ground.
Lucio had accidentally pulled one loose.
MC laughed and bent down to pick up the feather that shimmered in the sunlight.
"It's fine, Lucio, it doesn't hurt," MC said as they stood and extended their arm. "Here. Keep it close to you. It will protect you and keep you safe. And that way, you'll always have a part of me."
Lucio gently took the feather and admired it in the light before carefully tucking it away into his pocket.
"I'll never let it out of my sight," He said.
Having had enough adventure for one day, the pair made their way back to the palace by sunset.
After enjoying a nice meal together, they made their way to the bedroom were for the first time since the forest, MC unfolded their wings.
They crawled into bed next to Lucio and gently spread their wings over the two of them as they cuddled.
MC and Lucio soon fell asleep together wrapped in each other's arms and the soft, warm embrace of an angel's wings.
