AMBER P.O.V. –
“Mommy I’ll fix your plate.” Octavian scooted out a seat for his mother, she cautiously sat down and he got a plate and started putting food on it.
August was sitting at the end of the table with his mouth rested behind his hands in a praying position. I knew by his silence and stone face he was pissed.
“Here mommy.” Octavian handed her a plate full of food.
“O I didn’t need this much.” She laughed.
“I know you haven’t eaten in a long time so I wanted to make sure you got full.”
“Uh…thank you baby.” She gave an awkward smile, looking down ashamed that her secret had been exposed.
“Eat up.” He sat back by Sata.
I looked over at Aug who was staring straight ahead in the same position.
“What’s wrong daddy?” Sata asked taking a sip of soda.
“Your son was walking on a highway this morning.” August said in the same position, in a calm tone, not raising his voice.
“It was an accident. Umm…our car stopped.”
Aug moved his mouth a little.
“Get up from my table.” He said calmly, still not raising his voice.
“August.” I tried to diffuse the situation.
“Get. Up. From. My. Table.” He looked at her, in the same position, pausing after each word for emphasis.
“Whatever. Octavian let’s go.” She stood up and threw her napkin down.
Octavian was about to get up, Aug reached his arm out to sit him down.
“He’s not going anywhere.”
“That’s my son you can’t tell me what he’s going to do.”
August got up rapidly. The whole entire room got quiet.
Aug pushed his chair back where it toppled over and walk toward her.
“Uh-oh.” Lil Auggie said.
I sighed and rubbed my temple, knowing his wrath was about to come down.
“When you beat a child. When you leave him to walk on a fucking highway alone, ehere he can get hit by fucking zooming cars, you lose the right to say what he can or cannot do.” August was kissing distance away from her face.
“Get the fuck outta my house. Now.” He didn’t say loudly, but definitely sternly. Aug’s eyes burned fire in her face. Almost like he did me when I said I was going to get rid of the baby.
She stepped back looked at Octavian, then me, then back at Aug who would was still quite close to her. I saw a single tear roll down her cheek she wiped it away. Then quickly left.
“Mommyyyyyy don’t leave me.” Octavian chased after her.
She touched his head. “Stay here baby. I’ll get you later. Okay.”
“Okay.” He started crying and hugged her tightly.
She hugged him back and kissed his forehead, then peeled him away, walking out the front door.
Octavian went on the porch and watched her leave waving. Once she left he sat on the stairs crying with his head on his knees. I went out there after him, closing the door behind me.
Sata and Auggie opened the door.
“You guys go back.”
“But mommy why did daddy do that?” Sata asked.
“Sata please go back inside, take Auggie with you. We will be in, in a second.”
“I love you Octavian.” Sata said by the door.
“Love you too.” He said through his tears.
Sata started to cry, then closed the door.
“Come here.” I told Octavian to sit on my lap.
He did and he wrapped his arms around my neck and cried. “I want my mommy.”
“You’ll get her. She’ll be back to get you. Calm down, sweetie.”
“Can we go get her now?”
“I can’t do it now. But I’ll do it later okay?”
“Okay.” He laid his head back on my shoulder.
I rubbed his back to calm him down a little more.
“Why did he do that?” He asked me.
“He was just concerned for you. He doesn’t like your mommy treating you mean.”
“She doesn’t do it all the time. Just when she drinks. She’s a great mommy.” He rubbed his eyes, his head still on my shoulder.
“I’m sure she is baby. But you don’t deserve to be treated like that.”
“She doesn’t mean it.”
“I know, but still. Something very bad could’ve happened to you.” He scooted his face more into my neck and played with my earrings.
No matter how intellectually advanced he was, he was still a child. He still thought like a child. Loved like a child. And acted like one. Therefore in this moment, he needed to be comforted like a child.
And deep down more than anything for him, I wanted to make sure his mother got the help she needed so she could properly raise him. It was evident she loved him. And he loved her. But you could tell she was a young mother, trying to figure things out.
And hell I’m married and have money and this shit is hard. I could only imagine being broke, young, and alone trying to be a mother. I don’t agree with what she did, but I wanted to know more about her. Wanted to know her story and how I could help her get to the level she needs to be to take care of Octavian.
“When you and your mother live in your car, where does she usually park?”
“The big parking lot at Target.” He pulled at my cheeks like an old grandma his head still on my shoulders.
“Boy stop pulling my cheeks.” I removed his hand.
He laughed then did it again.
“Boy. Stop.” I chuckled.
He laughed and tried to do it again, but I did his first.
“Owwww.” He laughed.
“Let’s go in so we can go to sleep.”
“Can I sleep with Sata?”
“Absolutely not boy. You getting your own room.” I grabbed his hand and we walked inside.
“My own room!?” He said excited. His eyes turned bright.
“Yup your own room.”
“I never had my own room before.”
“Well for tonight, you get one.” I walked him upstairs to another guest room we had that was not too far from Auggie’s room.
“Wow this bed is huge.” He ran and jumped on the king sized bed.
“Boy get down before you break it.”
“Sorry.” He laid down on it and made snow angels. But since there was no snow, I’m presuming these would be called bed angels.
Sata and Auggie ran in and jumped on the bed.
“Mommy can we have a sleep over in here?” Sata asked.
“Unh-unh everybody in their own room.”
“Mommy why are you being a Debbie downer?” Sata whined.
Auggie jumped on the bed, giggling and squealing.
“If you don’t sit your narrow behind down.” I looked at him.
He quickly sat down.
“Please mommy.” Sata begged.
“No. But you guys can stay up and watch a movie together. Then after the movie. I want you in your own rooms.”
“Yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!” They cheered.
“Mommy can we have popcorn?” Sata asked.
“Yeah I’ll go make you some.”
“Octavian come with me a sec.” He came with me. I went my bedroom and first got one of Aug’s big t-shirts. Then went in Sata’s room and got a pair of her sweat pants.
“This shirt is too big. And these are girls pants.” He held the pink sweat pants up disgusted.
“I know baby, but until I can go shopping tomorrow, we gotta make do. Okay?”
“Alright.”
“Go in the bathroom down the hall right there and put on your clothes while I make the popcorn.”
He took the clothes, walked down the hall to the bathroom and closed the door. I went in the kitchen to make their popcorn. Aug must’ve been downstairs because he wasn’t in the room.
I got a big bowl and put their popcorn I made in there and went upstairs.
“Octavian.” I called.
“Yes?” He came out the room.
“Go pick up your clothes off the bathroom floor and hand them to me so I can wash them. Don’t put your clothes on the floor honey.”
“Sorry.” He jetted down the hall to the bathroom and I took the popcorn to them.
“Do not waste any on the floor or the bed.” I handed it to Sata.
They had found a movie on Disney and were watching it.
“Here Mrs. Alsina.” Octavian handed me his clothes, then jumped in the bed.
“Y’all enjoy. I’ll be in the room.”
They nodded okay and I left out to go find Aug. I went downstairs and he was in his favorite chair, drinking a beer, watching television.
“The kids are upstairs watching a movie.”
He ignored me.
Oh God. Really? What now?
“I’m going to bed.” I waved him off, walking upstairs. I didn’t have the strength to argue today.
“That was fucked up what you did.” He looked over at me.
“What did I do now?” I sighed, standing on the steps looking at him.
“She abused that boy and you invited her in this house like shit was peachy. You wrong.”
“August the girl looks nineteen, maybe 20 at most. It’s not okay what she did, but I would’ve liked to have heard what was going on with her.”
“That’s your problem. Always trying to be somebody fucking savior. You not Jesus. Get that through your fucking head.” He bit down on a kit-kat he opened.
“I don’t think I’m Jesus, but you can obviously tell she’s not an outright horrible person. She’s going through a lot. The boy did say they were living in a car. On top of that they haven’t eaten in God knows how long. ”
“I don’t give a fuck how she living. What the fuck she going through. Or what she didn’t eat. From the looks of it, her ass could miss a few meals. That don’t give her no right to abuse and neglect that boy.”
“We should try to get her help so she can properly take care of him. As opposed to just leaving her out on the street. Being a mother is hard August.”
“I don’t give a fuck. And if you gon go save her like you try to do everybody else, then find somewhere else to live because you not coming back in here. And that’s just what it is.” He took another bite of kit-kat, looking at the the television.
“First off you don’t have the authority to kick me out of anywhere.”
“Bet. I’ll change every lock on this mutha-fucka if I have to.” He looked over at me then back at the television.
“You acting like this isn’t my house too.”
“In theory it is. But I pay the bills in this mutha-fucka. That makes this shit mine.”
“You acting like I don’t have money.”
“I ain’t say that. I know you do. But if you go try to find her, then you use your money to buy your own damn house. Cause you not coming in here. End of story.”
“And I will most definitely take you to court. My name is on the deed.”
He got up and came to the stairs where I was and got in my face. I pushed his head. He brought it back in front of me.
“That’s fine by me. And better believe I will be fighting for custody of my kids. And I don’t know think the judge will be too fond of a person who agrees with abuse. But you should know that. Seeing as you the lawyer.” He said sarcastically and brushed passed me walking up the stairs.
I sat on the stairs and put my face in my hands.
What am I going to do?
