Dave's POV
I couldn't understand what happened. Minutes ago,i was at the restaurant watching the person who kidnapped Kath drive away and suddenly,the next thing i know,I'm in a dark room tied up with a black bag over my head.
I was kidnapped just like Kath. They probably knocked me out the moment they pointed the gun at the back of my head. I still couldn't understand why they kidnapped me,I'm not rich...thinking back to the kidnapping...are they the same men that took Kath? If so,where is she? And why did one of them drive off leaving the other....
Ah,this is getting so confusing and I can barely breathe well through this sack. I tried to move but it was pointless,I was tied tight. I stayed quiet for awhile,listening to a conversation I heard over the door.
"What do you mean Katherine wasn't with him?" I heard a deep voice bellow angrily.
"There was no one with him. We checked the restaurant,Kath was gone".
"Something is wrong" a woman said panicked, "I talked to Kath this evening and she was fine but then,she dropped the phone and....I think something happened to her".
"Who could it be?" Another woman asked in a hoarse voice. "Liz,do you have any idea?".
"Many" a different voice spoke, "there are many gangs who want to take over Don Okafor but the prominent one is Abdul Hassan".
"Right,you said he attacked you and Kath at the club". There was a short silence.
"We have to wait till the Don gets back but you have to search for Kath right now. Any more delay may cause Kath's life to be in danger" the hoarse voice spoke again. There was silence and a few shuffles after. Silence followed.
Hold on! Don?! Gang?! Katherine is part of a gang?! My God,Dave you've really entered. She is related to Don Okafor?! The biggest Don in Nigeria?! She has killed me.
But despite my predicament,I couldn't help but feel worried about Kath. If they haven't found Kath,that means she is in real danger...just like me!
I stayed in silence for a while then I heard shuffles. The door creaked open and i heard someone walk in. The person removed the sack off my head and i saw a woman. She had fair skin and gold braided hair.
I tried to speak through the gag in my mouth but it came out muffled. The woman put a finger on her lips signalling me to stay quiet. I nodded and she slowly peeled off the gag.
"Who are you?" I asked immediately a little miffed.
"I am Katherine's friend,Elizabeth but you can call me Liz" she introduced herself.
"Wait? You are Liz? The Liz Katherine talks about?" I asked shocked. She nodded as she untied the ropes on my hands and legs. I got up,rubbing my sore wrists as I stared at her impassive face.
"Why are you helping me?" I asked suspiciously.
"You have nothing to do with our issues. I bet you have no idea what's going on".
"I have a pretty good idea" I said, "you and Kath are part of Don Okafor's gang".
"It's more than that but seeing as you don't understand,I will leave it at that. Its not your cross to carry" Liz said,looking away which confused me further. Is there something more?.
"I will help you sneak out while I go to find Kath. I received a clue to where she could be. Her mother wants to save her but we need a direct order from Don Okafor and he is out of reach" Liz said.
I held her back, "I want to help. I will help you save Kath".
"You can't be serious" Liz looked at me shocked before shaking her head. "Why would you want to help Kath? She just barged into your life and forced you to help her. You have no reason to help".
So she knows. "Yes but Kath is still my friend and...we made a pact. i made her a promise and I don't intend to go back on it".
Liz looked at me impressed and nodded. I on the other hand,was shocked. Never had I thought that one day,I would be willing to risk so much as my life for a friend.
"Follow me" Liz said and cautiously walked to the door. She opened it narrowly and peeked then gestured for me to come. I walked out of the dark room into a bright hallway. The blinding light caused Dave to wince for a moment.
"Follow me. There are two bodyguards outside so we have to get by them" Liz said.
"What do we do?" I asked.
"Wait here,don't make any noise" Liz said and walked out. I stood quietly and waited for a signal. I suddenly heard a loud crashing sound and a scream follow. I cautiously approached the entrance of the door. There was no one outside so I quickly ran out but I bumped into a bodyguard almost immediately.
"Not again" I muttered in frustration.
Liz came out of a corner. Looking between me and the bodyguards,she said, "You suck at sneaking out".
"Excuse me,pardon me if I've never done anything like this before" I said sarcastically and bitter,ignoring the frowning bodyguard in front of me. I looked back at him a little scared but Liz just leisurely walked to him bored.
"Stop being intimidating Chris" she said and the bodyguard's face loosened up. Liz turned to me, "Ignore him,he is actually going to help us save Kath. He just wanted to scare you".
I relaxed slightly and dropped my hands. Liz, Chris and I left the shed I was in and walked away,hiding in the shadows whenever somebody passed.
"So you are Dave" the bodyguard said,eyeing me. I flinched subconsciously under his gaze.
"Huh,yeah..." I decided to answer. He didn't say anything more but I could feel his condescending gaze on me from time to time.
"Hurry up,we can't let anyone know you are gone before we leave" Liz hissed and we followed her to a black car. We got in immediately and Liz drove off. We were out of that house. Now that I think about it,is it Don Okafor's house?
I decided to ask another question that was on my mind. "Liz,you said I didn't know everything. Tell me,what don't I know about Kath? Explain it to me".
"She..." Liz and Chris exchanged looks and I watched them,hoping they would finally tell me the truth. Liz looked down,sighing "Kath is Don Okafor's daughter".
My eyes widened at the revelations and a mini explosion took place in my mind. Every single moment Kath mentioned her father crossed my mind.
"My father is a very influential man. After saving me,my father will want to know who you are. He will find out and hurt you for interfering. You might even lose your life" Katherine suddenly said. She added after a second thought. "Without me to back you up of course".
.....
"I don't know,my parents never told me. Ever since I was a kid,my parents never let me go out,they said the world is a dangerous place and I am safer in doors but honestly,it was just being trapped".
"...my father put more measures to make sure I wouldn't escape,but here I am". I smiled at Dave who still couldn't believe what he heard.
Now I understand why Kath didn't want to tell me anything. I slumped back shocked, "why? Why doesn't her father want her to leave the house? I know her kidnapping is a reason and he wants to keep her safe but why make it seem like she is a prisoner?". I had to ask.
Chris and Liz exchanged looks before she answered me again. "You don't need to know".
I felt frustrated that no one was willing to tell me anything. It isn't fair,why do I have to be kept in the dark about everything?
The silence persisted for a while before we stopped at a deserted street.
"Where are we?".
"Abandoned site" Liz answered. "I have news that Kath is here. Listen Dave,you will sneak in there with me while Chris will help us distract the men. Stay close to me Dave,you can't afford to get shot".
"Okay" I nodded then asked, "also,how do you know my name?".
Liz scoffed,bringing out a gun and cocking it. "If it wasn't hard for them to find you,how hard do you think it must have been for them to find out your name?".
I frowned,not happy that they had probably done a background search on me but now was not the time to complain. Chris and Liz ran into the bushes and hid,watching an uncompleted building. There were men gathered,patrolling the area.
I joined Chris and Liz and whispered to them, "how do we get in without anyone seeing?".
"I'm thinking okay" Liz whispered back irritated. "We can't just barge in there,we will be putting Kath's life in danger".
"I just feel like shooting them and getting this over with" Chris said,his hand twitching ever so slightly on the gun. I shifted back in fear. Yep,he is dangerous. We stayed there for a while before Liz gave up.
"Forget it,just shoot them down" she said suddenly getting up and shooting silently at two men. I stared at Liz in shock,flinching as i heard them grunt and fall down with a thud. She killed them...
How did she end up being a cold blooded killer?.
Chris had gotten up too and shot at the remaining patrol guards. He pulled me out of my thoughts by pulling me up. "Stop behaving like this. If you keep on doing like this,you will drag us down. Come on".
Without asking my opinion,Chris dragged me inside with Liz. They took a defensive position,putting me in the middle with both their backs turned to me. They pointed their guns around waiting for their next victims.
"Someone will find out soon that we are here" Liz said, "let's split up. Dave is with me,Chris check around. If you find Kath let me know,I'll give you a signal if we find her".
Chris nodded, "okay,good luck".
"You too" Liz nodded and walked like she knew the place. I followed her cautiously but we barely came across any more guards. I wonder if Chris was having that much luck.
"Hey!" someone shouted and we turned our heads to see some man standing pointing a gun at us but Liz suddenly shot him without any warning while I ducked. The sound echoed and the man fell dead with a thud.
Liz and i suddenly split up when gunshots resounded near us. My heart nearly leaped out of my chest. Dave,you are going to get yourself killed if you get involved in this...what am I saying? I am already involved!
I noticed a door and i couldn't help but feel something pull me towards it. I crept to it cautiously,peeking through the hole in the door.
My eyes widened. Kath!
She was tied up to a chair just like me,with a sack over her head. Even though i couldn't see her face,i knew she wasn't feeling well. I was about to walk in when I saw two men inside.
They didn't look like goons,they were dressed normally and looked very important like,they were probably the bosses.
"...We have Don Okafor's daughter. Now,he will have to agree to our demands" one of the men said, "but I have to say, i am more interested in killing her. If we didn't need her so much,she would be dead".
The other was about to speak but someone ran in from another entrance,interrupting him. He looked displeased, "why did you interrupt me?".
"Young boss! Don Okafor's men are here!".
"What?!" The man exclaimed in both shock and fear. "Take his daughter away now!" He ordered.
Oh no,i can't let them take Kath. I have to do something. I looked at the materials around me,then looked at myself. I realized I was still wearing my chef uniform. I didn't realize I had it on till now. I put my hand into my pocket and brought out a matches box.
Hmm,who knew it would come in handy.
I set fire to some flammable plastic materials and with some courage,threw it in their direction.
"Ah!"
"Argh!".
"Aahhh!".
I looked and it turned out melted plastic had touched one and the other two were nearly set on fire. They ran away in different directions screaming for help.
I can't believe i did that.
I turned to Kath and ran inside,freeing her hands and legs. She kicked me repeatedly maybe thinking i was one of her kidnappers but the second i removed the sack from her head,her eyes widened in shock.
I removed the gag from her mouth.
"Dave...?".
I forced a smile and she threw her arms around me,hugging me tightly. She sobbed heavily and i patted her back consolingly,hoping she recovered soon so we could leave this darned place.
Suddenly,we heard a gunshot and I froze,feeling a sharp pain course through my body.
"Dave!".
