Victorian miss Holly Ambrose is the youngest of her family and the only one unwed. Her Christmas season starts off very romantically indeed when Victor, an old friend who she once admired returns to the neighborhood. Shortly on the heels of this arrival, she receives a passionate letter from a secret admirer!
Soon she has a visit from a neighbor, Archibald, who bears a dinner invitation and a desire for courtship. Are one of these gentlemen the secret admirer who wrote her such a passionate letter? It seems out of character for either of them. Meanwhile, Holly finds herself engaging in verbal sparring matches with David, the new parson.
As the various holiday events proceed, Holly starts to get to know each of these fine gentlemen a little better. Archibald is friendly and intriguing, but his high station in life feels like an uncomfortable fit to forward-thinking Holly. Victor is all smiles and charm, but what secrets is he holding about his life during the years that he's been gone? And why is sparring with David so unsettling? He's not even a suitor. Or is he?
Set amid the lovely scenery of a rural English Christmas, this little story of Christmas Romance is sure to please. I really love how the story unfolds during the course of the holiday seasons, and Holly the Naturalist is an interesting and engaging young woman. There's also a sequel, Mistletoe, and Matrimony, that looks quite intriguing!
