I first built each wall of my fortress from wood,
Watched it burn under a cloudy sky,
My feet dark with ash,
Stepping and skipping across puddles.
From the ashes, rose stone walls,
Old volcanic rock that once
Warmed the earth and then warmed me,
Until they were beaten down, brick by brick.
I was a giant, Hercules is strength and will,
But Goliath never beat David.
Still I rebuilt my wall,
Poured my blood, sweat and tears into the cement.
It was a fence at best.
I learnt how to blow glass from sand and the heat of each blow,
I created wonderful windows to show you how the light shines through,
Still, they crumbled like chalk.
I'm on the run now, a refugee in my own land,
And I dare not look behind me to remember the ruins
My castle still stands tall and proud,
Overlooking Eden.
