---------

The next evening began just as Jerome promised: Another chance for Oswald to prove himself to Jane's brother. Whereas Jerome was excited and itching for a need to maim and torture another person on all levels, Jane couldn't see the point to all of this. She got that he was bored - she was too, but she didn't understand why he was dragging it on to this level. Originally, she was told this: Jerome had to see if Oswald had what it takes to help him in the outside world. And while her brother was still checking him out, Jane made a firm decision that he didn't. The type of people they needed on the outside world was what Jerome described to her as crazy, resourceful and leaders . She hadn't see much of that from Oswald in Arkham.

They had a list of people who had. They had scoped Arkham out, seen how to get their mission done. But that was all Jane knew. It was all Jerome agreed to tell her. She was growing increasingly frustrated with him. He had always been egotistical, but she needed to know what was going to happen after. She wanted to make sure he wouldn't try anything with her. And if he did have something like that planned for her, she was going to make sure she was alright. She wouldn't die from his hands.

This was all running through Jane's mind as she sat in her usual seat in the community area. A couple of inmates had went to fetch Oswald and they had just returned. She watched as her brother put a loose noose around his neck before stopping, realizing something was off. Jane frowned. Why did he stop? Something interesting was finally happening in this place. Jane was hoping Oswald wouldn't be able to get out of the noose and just hang himself in front of all of them. At least then Jane wouldn't be dying of boredom.

However, when Jerome ripped the bag off. Everything made sense why her brother was confused. It was Dietrich. Jane's interest was peaked. Finally, something was happening.

Oswald then came running in, caring an electric wire. He threw it onto the pool of pee that seeped out of poor brain dead Dietrich, causing him to fall over. Oswald stood furiously behind Jerome, looking like he would have a tantrum any minute. The thought of that made Jane giggle softly to herself.

"Okay, that was clever-ish." Jerome admitted, turning to face the small angry man.

Oswald, no less angry, grabbed a spork from a table and held it like a weapon against Jerome. Now, Jane giggled a little louder, earning some glances from the other inmates. A spork? Did that poor guy not realize how weak he looked?

Jerome thought the same as he stared at the man, rather unimpressed. "Yeah, that's a spoon."

"It is also a fork!"

Jane laughed. "Are you being serious right now, Oswald? I seriously can't tell if you think that's going to help you."

Jerome nodded along to his sister as he titled his head at the man. "Looks like you still got some fight in you. But I think it's just too little, too late, too..."

"-Boring," Jane finished for him. "Oswald has no more tricks left."

Jerome glanced over at her. "Yes, yes, boring." Then he turned away, waving his hand. "Lobotomize the little bird."

"Wait, wait!" Oswald held his hands out, trying to keep the other inmates away from him. Jane was curious as to what this little bird's last resort was going to be. "You said this prison was all in my mind." Jerome turned to look back at him. "Maybe I'm in a prison right now."

Jane frowned. "That's literally what Arkham is." Oswald turned and glared at the girl. "Good to know you still got some sanity left for you to know where you are."

"That's not what I meant." He snapped before turning to the girl's brother. He had to rationalize with this man, get down to his level of competence. "Like I was saying. Maybe I'm in a prison where you can't get to me."

Then Oswald proceeded to mime a wall around him, "protecting" him from Jerome. Jane watched as the sides of her brother's mouth turned upright, clearing intrigued.

Jane was not. She saw this and rolled her eyes. This was something perfectly childish enough for her brother to enjoy. Jane, not so much. She stood from her seat, only getting a few glances, and walked quietly out of the room.

She started roaming the halls. The guards had gotten a little more lenient with her because of Jerome. But that didn't mean there weren't a couple that she needed to steer clear from.

As she looked around the walls, she couldn't help but feel a little more like her old self. She remembered how scared she used to be in here, how she wanted to just get out or die, either or, nothing in between.

Then she met Laney.

Jane could feel old emotions she buried six weeks ago starting to come back up. Laney was the best of Jane. She made her feel special and loved and that she didn't need to go back down that path of destruction and murder.

Laney would be disappointed if she saw you now.

You're so much better now anyways.

Laney doesn't matter anymore. She's dead. You're alive! You can finally live the life you were always meant to live.

The voices meant that to comfort her, in their own way. But it just made her feel worse. She thought she had forever with her, but she didn't. She had a couple of months, not even a full year.

One tear started to roll out of Jane's eyes. She stopped it immediately, took a deep breath, and refocused. She wasn't that person anymore. She couldn't think back on the past, especially when the present is so important. Jane had to survive, and if she had to kill a couple of people for that to happen, she would.

--------------------------

Jane had done some more wandering before she found her brother's voice again. He was talking to Oswald in Oswald's cell. She stood quietly next to the door, leaning her ear in.

Oswald's voice was what she heard first. "You're planning something."

Jerome's voice answered, sounding relaxed and slow. "Right-y, old boy... Something spectacular. See, I'm in this funny farm cause I need to find the creme de la crazy. Which is why I need you."

Then Jane heard a mixed of crazed laugher, no doubtedly started by her brother and his obnoxious one. It last another second before Jerome spoke again. "Ah, you get it. But when we're done, the world out there, that'll be the asylum. What do you say?"

Jerome never mentioned much of that to his sister. She knew he was looking for people. But he never mentioned a plan after he found them. How would he turn the world out there into an asylum? What was he planning?

There was pause before Oswald spoke. "Thank you for your kind offer. I don't expect to be here very long."

Jane heard Jerome stand from where he sat. "You'll come around. They always do." Then he started whistling out of the room.

Jerome knew his sister was standing there, but waited until he was far enough from Oswald's cell to acknowledge her. "Looks like I got a little fly on the wall."

Jane didn't waste any time. "Jerome, what are you planning when we get out of here? How are you going to turn the world out there crazy?"

He looked down at his naive younger sister and smiled. It was sometimes cute how in the dark he left her. "Oh Jane. I won't tell you it all. It's a secret that I intend to keep very safe." He walked a little closer to her. "But I will tell you part of it." Jane looked at him expectantly. He paused dramatically. "We're going to be visiting a family member when we get out. Someone you probably won't like, neither do I. I'm going to get my revenge, and you're going to help."

Jane frowned, thinking back to the selection of family members they had. Her stomach dropped when she thought of one certain person. "By family member, you don't mean...."

Jerome smiled at his sister's discomfort. "Oh that's exactly who I mean. Jeremiah, here we come."
