THE NEW WORLD WITCHES

I knew that I had to leave England if Heather had any chance of being safe. I had to leave my name and every single thing that I had built over the last fifty years behind. I hate them even though they had been my companions for centuries.

I sat in an abandoned shed close to the sea. I had managed to stop the bleeding from Heather's wounds and the poor woman lay on a make shift mattress in a mind induced sleep. I hated doing it but I knew she needed to sleep if I was to heal her and besides, she was too weak to handle the added emotional pain of her husband's death.

Using my keen senses, I determined the time. It was only a few minutes before sunrise. There was no way that I would get out of London with a pregnant woman and going across the Atlantic as I had decided after cleaning Heather. The sun would not harm me immediately but after a few hours, my skin would begin to dry up.

I had tried it once; a long time ago. I had been tempted by the lure of activity of day only to scream and hide in pain. the feeling of someone pouring molten lava on my body had left a very strong memory and remainder. However, years later when I had given into my desires, it had taken sometime before I run from the blissful rays of Ra. That was when I had come up with my odd theory; as a vampire lives longer, the sun's effects weaken.

So unlike many of the traitors I had created, I had the abiltiy to walk in the sun for a few hours of the morning before I felt like I was being burnt from the inside out.

Sadly, I had no choice on this day. I had no way of using another of my budding gifts, the flight I had named it when first I discovered it, to get us across the Atlantic. I did not know my limits with it and was not willing to risk it with a deadly combination of tiredness, weakness, thirst, the sun and a poor woman.

'I might as well rest,' I thought getting up and going over to the hole I had dug up.

****

I rose a few hours before sunset, not that I liked it much. my thirst was killing me and I had a nagging feeling at the back of my mind. I had to find us some clothes and aa drink for my craving.

I checked on Heather, making sure she was fine and not about to wake up. to make sure she continued sleeping I played on her mind once more.

it did not take me long to get to the nearby community. I knew that I looked like a harlot from the dirty streets of Constantinople. My hair was a complete tangle of dark waves, dust and gore; the dress was ripped in places dimmed immoral and soiled with blood; my skin coated with a grim surface.

I used my powerful mind gift to make sure no one paid me any mind as I walked. I was looking for the perfect victim to give me their blood. I had to make sure that whoever they were, no one would miss them.

As I turned a corner to the pier, I found him. He was a big man with a patch covering his left eye. His good eye was as green as the grass plains of Spain and his mouth was as thin as any wire I had met. His garments smelled of urine, mead and sex.

I slowed down as he came closer to me. I offered him the weakest smile I could muster as he passed by me. I pulled his attention to me just for assurance.

I smiled as his meaty fingers grasped my cold skin and yanked me in his direction. I played the weak woman. I had done this more times than I cared to remember.

''You look lost sweetheart.'' He had a Yorkshire accent.

I gave him a weak smile as I read strolled through his mind. He was an orphan who had grown up in York. He had come to London seeking wealth only to find horror and poor work. He was the killer the police had been looking for. His head was littered with ugly disgusting scenes of death. he killed women after having sex with them and stole their money.

''Are you some kind of mute?'' he asked.

''A little shy sir,'' I answered weakly. I smiled up staring into his good eye. I could read his story if I wanted but I needed him to think me weak and helpless like all his other victims.

''Come now, I will make you forget it,'' he said. His words were all tinged with the strong smell of tobacco. He intended to add me to his long list of murders.

I surely have no money on me, I thought as he pulled me into a dark alley. I let him touch me freely. I had no intention of letting this go on for longer than neccesary. ''You're a fool Edgar.''

He coiled away from me. Fear begun to sip into his eye as he looked into my face. ''I didn't tell you my name.''

''I know.''

''Are you some kind of witch?''

I laughed in his face. My smile broadened as he slowly backed away from me. ''I know some ladies that fit your conclusion and I am not one of them.'' I pushed off the wall and took measured steps to him. ''I am a whole different creature little boy.''

He snarled in anger and sent his beefy fist in my direction. I let it touch me. ''That sh...''

He stopped his words as I smiled at him. ''I have had a lot worse than that and none of it bothered me. To be honest, it is a rather weak blow.''

''What are you?''

''I am your death.'' I did not let him have a chance to run from me as I attcked him. I enveloped him in my iron grip and squeezed until he was about to scream. I clapped my hand on his mouth as I let my canines grow out to their full length.

He thrashed around in my arms, even plunging his knife into my side but I refused to be bothered. clasping his mouth and pulling his throat closer to my mouth, I made his mind think of the calm seas that he loved. I bit down into his throart and sucked.

As soon as the red elixir touched my tongue, my emotions and powers labored to get out. I kept drinking until his memories gripped my mind. He was a sad man who always wanted to find friendship. His wife had left him years ago and he had murdered her in revenge. The few happy memories of his childhood were the only thing that made me spare him.

I snapped his neck with my free hand and drained his body. I had no time to be subtle and clean, so I did not care that some of the blood dripped onto my already ruined garments.

I used my powers to make sure that no one else was around before I walked out of the alley. I saw a bunch of clothes hanging across some lines a few meters away. Using my superior speed, I borrowed three dresses, two heavy coats and a set thick leather boots.

I made my way back to the hiding place that I had emerged from an hour ago. I stopeed in my tracks when I felt a quick pulsing heart. I cursed as I realized that Heather was awake and confused. Her fear was thick in the air and grew thicker as I approached the shelter. There was no way this was going to be easy for her.

I used the most open entrance to enter the little shed. Her silent gasp was as clear as the church bells of Cantebury. there was no way that I was going to lie my way out of this.

''Lady Sheldon?'' she asked. I nodded in reply. ''Where is my dear husband and why are dressed like some robber?''

I could only open my mouth and close it in response. How was I supposed to explain the ripped and dirty dress? Moreover, there was dried blood on the dress and the woman's eyes kept looking at it.

''Well,'' she said.

''I got you some new clothes.'' I tried to avoid the topic.

''What happened last night?''

I knew that she was not going to drop the subject any time soon. It was quite clear in her eys and the way that her heart was beating. She really wanted to know everything and there was no chance in hell she would let it go. I had to tell the poor creature. ''Well i suggest you get changed and I will tell you everything you want to know.''

She gave me a look of pure annoyance but I ignored it and threw her one of the dresses I had stolen. I waited for her to change before I threw the coat and boots at her feet. ''Put those on as well.''

''Are we going somewhere?'' she asked as she did tthe coat buttons.

''You are but I am not going to stay with you,'' I said.

''Where is my husband?''

''He is dead,'' I said heartlessly. Her curiousity was beginning to annoy me. I knew her next questions just by playing with her mind. I stopped her from speaking and begun to change my attire.

The cold would not affect me so I put on the sleeveless dress. I kept my senses keen and aware just in case the others were combing the city for me and Heather. Sybilla must have told them what I had done to poor Ed.

''We must leave here Heather,'' I said after pulling on the dress.

''Why?''

''For your own safety.'' I told her the least bit of the truth. I couldnot bring myself to tell her that if she stayed in England, she would be hunted down.

I thanked my old gods and the new God for what came out of my friend's lips. ''How do we get out then? I have no money and neither do you ma'am,'' she added.

''Money means nothing to me.'' I placed my cold hand on her bulging stomach. ''But I promise you that you and all your decendants will never want for anything as long as they endure.''

She eyed me curiously. It was not as if I could blame her. How many people have had a strange woman promise them wealth for their cchildren. ''You're a strange woman.''

''I am a lot of things.''

I grabbed her and wrapped her in my strong grip and marched out. Strangely enough, Heather was calm. I smiled as the cold winds brushed against my alabaster skin. I used my newest power and felt Heather begin to shake in my grip.

''If you stop fighting, I will not let you fall down.''

''Are you sure?''

I did not answer her, letting the winds gather round my ankles. This was bound to be difficult but I had to do it; all in the name of the little sheds of decency I had left in my soul.

Just like the gift of fire, I used my mind to play with the wind at my ankles. I forced it forward, then backwards and each time we moved with it.

''What are you?'' Heather asked in a small voice.

''I am nothing but your friend.''

''Yet here you are flying and holding a pregnant woman as if she be a babe.''

''There things I can't tell you for your own safety my dear child.''

She did not respond. I closed my eyes and thought of the little beach I had travelled to years ago. The soft and shiny sand which glowed with a radiant silver light once the man touched its shores; the tall brown pines along the mountain side; the small settlement of Indian folk I had come to respect.

''Where are we going?'' Heather asked.

My eyes flew open and I looked round to realize we were moving. The lights of London's night were slowly passing by under my feet. ''You shall see.''

I felt someone tagging at my mind. I knew who it was before he tried again. The centurion Marco had been the only one I had let into my mind on occassion and I had stopped trusting him. If I was to be honest, I had never trusted all of them. There was a part of me waiting for their betrayal. With a heavy sigh, I closed my mind off to Marco and went into his using my new power.

I watched everything he was doing. They were all seated round a massive polished table and were intent on finding me. The drapes over the large windows could not conceal the noisy waters that were closeby. Three humans lay at the foot of Alexander's chair with their necks broken and bitten. The bite marks were rather too visible.

''She's locked me out,''' Marco said.

''There was no way to reason with her,'' Sybilla said. ''The fact is we should leave her alone unless we want to turn up like Edward.''

''She's weak at the moment,'' Sargon said. ''She barely tasted blood in the last two years.''

''And yet she killed Edward,'' Alexander said. ''She is the mother of us all, we best not forget how powerful she is.''

''We will not do so,'' Sybilla said. ''I suggest looking for the pregnant woman and killing her.''

''To what end?'' Marco asked.

''To send a lesson. She ended Ed's life, I want the Brandon woman.''

''All in time.'' Alexander stood up from where he was seated. He begun to pace the dark room. ''We have more pressing issues.''

''Like what?'' Akara asked.

''We are to be the new authority of our kind. we need to sort that out as soon as possible.''

I was about to get out of Marco's head when I decided to leave him a small message. One day you will regret betraying me.

I left him confused returning to my flight with Heather. I looked down at the woman who had somehow fallen asleep. the waves of the Atlantic were under our feet, ghosting by. The night was clear and I could see for miles upon miles of the dark waves.

The journey took a few hours and I almost dropped Heather as the new land appeared. Luckily for me she was a heavy sleeper. I had never been more thankful for my inhuman reflexes than at that moment. I pulled Heather deeper into my embrace as the beach grew nearer.

Very little had changed. The sands, trees and mountain were as I remembered them. The little settlement had developed into a town of sorts. Structures were alive everywhere.

I used my powers to seek out any immortal creatures. There were none. I didnot wake up the woman as I stepped onto the beach. I knew everyone in the small town I had discovered was called Deepwater Creek. There was a curious blend of the Indians I had left years ago and new people. I was sure none of the families I had left behind had survived the colonisation.

I held Heather like a baby as I walked through the silent streets. It was very late in the night and no one in the town was awake. I walked to the boarding house at the edge of the mountains and knocked on the door. I knew an old woman named Sarah would open the door and she did.

Her eyes were full of sleep and the scaars from the pox covered up her cheeks. Lines of age covered her face making her look like the ancient women of old Britain. her wispy grey hair was the chaos of untangled notes.

''Who are you evil creature?''

Her unfriendly and defensive tone alarmed me. ''I mean you no harm Sarah Winchester.''

''Even if you did the spirits would not let you harm me and to be frank neither would my sisters.''

She was a witch. Her blood smelled of the ancient blood of Endor. ''I swear by the old gods of Egypt and your gods, I mean you no harm.''

''What do you want demon?''

''Help me look after this woman,'' I answered.

''Why?''

''She is innocent and deserves a good life.''

''I sense her energy disappearing,'' Sarah said.

''I know that.'' I had already heard her heart giving up. ''But there's life inside of her.''

''I know that.''

''Help her.''

''I will not allow demon spawn into Deepwater.''

''She is not demon spawn,'' I snapped.

''This place is full of powers that can destroy you.''

''A lot of people recently tried to do that and I killed one of them without a thought.''

''Are you threatening me?'' she askked amusedly.

''I can't threaten you without risking Heather's baby's life.''

''We have seen some of your kind demon, most of them were stupid.''

''None of them are as old as me.''

''We shall help you for respecting us,'' Sarah said. ''We shall protect the family if we can.''

''Thank you.''

''But there's a price demon.''

Her words stopped me from moving. ''What price? If it is gold, I will give them plenty of it.''

''The woman will be dead within the year and we care nothing for your gold.''

''Then what price are you talking about?'' I asked. I knew I would regret asking more than the answer.

''We need three drops of your blood.''

''For what?''

''You never need to know and it shall never be used for the wrong reasons.''

''Never.''

''Then take her away,'' Sarah said heartlessly.

I had nothing to say. If I did not give them blood, they would turn Heather away. I had no choice. ''Fine,'' I whispered.

''What was that?''

''Make sure no one gets this from you or else...''

''Or else nothing demon. You are a creature of darkness and nothing else. I have friends that can make you my slave and far worse since the magic that created you is beyond even me.'' Sarah looked at me wickedly. "I will not ask you again. If you want to save her life, you know what I want."

Her words were laced with power. A power not as strong as Khanaika's, but just as dangerous. Here was a woman capable of fighting me with powers beyond the world and I had no way to threaten her.

''You shall never step in this house ever again if you want your life,'' she said.

''How will I know she and the baby are safe?''

''We are witches and can destroy anything.''

''No you can't some things are far worse than what you see.'' I placed Heather in her hands and woke her up.

''What is going on?'' she asked me. ''Where are we?''

''You're home.''

''What of you Lady Sheldon?''

I am no lady child. I removed some of the jewels I had wisely carried with us and placed them in her hands. ''Build a new life for your son and find the will to live again. you must forget me and everything you saw. This lady will help you,'' I said. I looked at Sarah and smiled. ''I will never come back, I promise.''

Heather pulled out a small vase and gave it to me. It was an ancient and odd looking thing. It was about the size of my palm with intricate markings round its edges. A small top was hanging from a string at its side. The price I must pay for my last drop of mortality. I bit my wrist and carefully put three drops into the awkward looking vase. "That is my payment." I looked at Heather once more and hoped she would find the will to live on even though her heart said otherwise. "I am sorry but I must go now."

''You...''

I shut Heather up quickly. ''May this be a distant dream in a dream.'' My power worked on her mind as her eyes hazed out. I let go after a time and run off in a blur.

I was going to go underground until I desired to return to the known world or until I was forced to.

As I made my way to the interior at full speed, my mind wandered to my old companions. I wondered what they were doing and whether they were doing it well. I hoped that their new council would not plunge the vampire world into darkness.

''Stay safe Brandon,'' I said to the blurred trees at my side.
