Iris~~
My hands still shake. The lights from the Society's car directly behind us shine against the back of Erik's headrest. I don't know how many cars follow us. At least three, I think. To steady my hands, slick with sweat, I run them over my bare legs. I'm still in Brydan's boxers. I met the Preeminence while wearing boxers. Also kind of . . . wow? He was . . . kind of . . . umm, well, beautiful?
I mean, no. He was horrible, awful, stuck up. But . . . wow. And also arrogant. Don't forget arrogant, insinuating I'm not good enough to attend one of their dinners. I wouldn't want to attend any of their stuffy dinners anyway.
No, I'm not bitter.
Before we drove off, Brydan handed us our belongings. My clothes are piled at my feet on the floorboard.
"How are we going to lose them?" I ask.
"We're not."
"What?"
Erik's face is unreadable making it incredibly difficult to tell he's joking.
"Erik?"
"I'm serious."
"But you can't be."
He sighs. "I've been caught."
"But what about changing the Society? You can't give up. Not on this. It's too important."
"I'm not." He grabs the gear shift and runs his thumb over the leather for a few moments, not speaking. "This cause means more to me than anything else, but it has to be put on hold because right now I have a dinner to attend."
"And what about me? Are you just supposed to kick me to the curb and leave me there indefinitely?"
He only grins.
