Chapter 8: Special Training (VOICE) + special changes
After that stressful acting session it’s now time for me to have my voice lesson. I went to the music room and saw JYP talking with Yenny-sunbae there. I entered the room and bowed down to them.
“Rhianne, you’re here now. Yenny will be with us today so she can also help me to train you in your voice.”
JYP is going to be my trainer, with Yenny-sunbae? O.o
At first, I had some vocalizations.
“Yadi yadi yadi yadi yadi yadi yadi yah.” Then it goes up.
Whenever I’m having my vocalization, I use my head tone during the high notes making me look like singing a classical song.
“Ooh, you can use your head tone? Daebak.” Yenny said.
“I told you she’s flexible.” JYP said.
Please don’t tell it. I feel so flattered.
“I think she’ll be able to sing IU’s Good day. Do you know the song?” Yenny asked me.
“I know it but I don’t memorize the song.” I said.
“It’s fine. We have the lyrics here. Can you read Hangul or you need it to be romanized?” she asked.
“Ahm, I prefer the Romanized version. I am still on the process of learning to read Hangul fast.” I said.
“Okay.” then she smiled. She looks very kind.
While Yenny-sunbae is fixing the lyrics, I continue to vocalize with JYP.
“Rhianne, I know you can belt songs. Try using your real voice in the higher parts of the vocalization.”
At first, I was able to make it but when it goes higher, I stopped.
“I can’t reach it with my real voice.” I told JYP.
“I see. So this will be your assignment. We’ll make the range of your real voice wider. Every day, when you wake up, press the G on the higher octave then try reaching for A. Currently, you’re real voice can only reach F.” JYP said. “But don’t use throat too much. Don’t put a lot of pressure to it. You should be able to know how to use the mixed voice.” JYP added.
“Mix voice?” I asked.
“Yes, the mix voice. In order for a person to avoid injuring his/her throat, he/she must learn it. Listen. Yenny, please come over here. You show Rhianne the difference between real voice, head tone and the mix voice.”
Yennye-sunbae sang a note using her real voice. Then the next she sang it with her head tone. I know the difference between those two. When Yenny-sunbae sang another note, it was like she was belting but you can see that she is not shouting. She stayed calm.
“That’s the mix voice. You are going to use real voice with your head tone. Use your chest voice instead of using your throat voice.” JYP said.
I was kinda fascinated with what he was saying. I never learned that before. I just sing and did not know that there is a thing called mixed voice.
“Is the song ready?” JYP asked.
“Yes.” Yenny answered.
Then we went to a recording studio. Ohh. It was my first time to see this thing with my eyes. I only see this thing on pictures or on TV.
“Rhianne, please enter.” JYP said.
I entered the room and put the headphone and JYP gave me a signal that I’m going to sing it.

At the last part, I didn’t breathe properly making may me not able to reach the last note. I lost breathe.
JYP then stopped the music.
“You should breathe in the part, Aigoo, hana dul then breath. I’m in my dream.” JYP said to me. “Then, if you can try using your mixed voice in that part, use it.”
I nodded and then the music played again. This time, I made it successfully.
I went out of the room and then JYP and Yenny-sunbae clapped.
“I think, there’s no such thing as limits for her. She was able to use the mixed voice easily.’ Yenny said.
“I did the mixed voice?” I asked.
“You did not recognize it?” she asked.
I shook my head.
“This girl is improving every second. I am so happy that I was able to get you first before other company.” JYP jokingly said.
I smiled at them.
JYP then gave me a note on what to drink and eat during morning to avoid throat pains. He then gave me an assignment (aside from the assignment earlier) to memorize IU’s Good day.
After those assignments, he let me hear my recording and I was like, “Did I really do that? Am I the one singing?’
I have heard myself singing in a lot of recordings and I suck at it. It feels like my voice suddenly enlarged. But now, when I heard my recording, I was so happy. Do I really have a wonderful voice like that? I didn’t know.
After that I went to my next sessions and ended up being tired because my last session was dancing. It was so tiring.
I was about to go home when I saw Bambam together with Youngjae and Yugyeom.
“Noona!” Bambam said.
“Oh, Annyeong.” I told them
“Noona, you look very tired.” Yugyeom said.
“Oh, yeah. Hihi. The training is becoming tougher than usual.”
“But it’s fun isn’t it?” Youngjae asked me.
I nodded in agreement.
“Ah, by the way noona, are you a college student?” Bambam asked.
“Actually, I’ve already graduated college in my country.”
They all look at me.
“Really?”
“Why? Is there something I said?”
“You’re not a Korean?” Youngjae asked.
I smiled, “I’m not. I’m a Filipino from the Philippines. I think you should know more about the Philippines. You have a lot of fans there.”
“I know the Philippines!” Bambam said.
“But noona, you look like a Korean because of your eyes.” Yugyeom said.
“Ahh, a lot of people told me that. But I promise, I’m a pure Filipino.” I said.
“Yah, I want to visit the Philippines!” Bambam said.
“I hope you’ll be able to visit the Philippines. A lot of fans will be happy. Promise.”
“Ahm, but noona, do you know something about Math? Mark hyung told us that during your acting session you explained something related to Math.” Yugyeom said.
“Mark said that?” I smiled a little bit.
“Yeah, uhm, can you please help this two with their Math problem. Their tutor is starting to get mad at them. I don’t know anything about Math.” Youngjae said while laughing.
“About what?” I asked.
“Trigonometry.” they both said.
Why Trigonometry? I suck at it.
“Ahm, let me see the problem.” I said.
“Let’s sit down on the bench.” Bambam said.
When we sat down, Bambam explained to me that they understand a bit of it but there is one question that they can’t answer.
“Ooh, proving identities? (1-cos2x)/2 = sin2x”
“What are we gonna do with that?” Yugyeom said.
I am still thinking of what to do…
“Ahh, use the double measure identity to replace cos2x.”
“Ahhhh. cos2x is equivalent to cos2x-1.” Bambam said.
“Yah, why are you going to use cos? You’re looking for the sin (read as sign) because the one on the right is on the sin. So you should use the sin…” I was not finish talking when someone interrupted
“Why use the sign when you have a choice?”
I looked at that person. It was Mark. My heart stopped beating, I guess.
“Yah, hyung, the sign you’re saying is different from the sin noona is referring to.” Youngjae said.
“Oh, really?” Mark said.
“Yah, hyung, are you in love? How were you able to make such corny statements?” Bambam asked.
The members started teasing Mark. I laughed a bit.
“Yah, I’m not.” Mark blushed and then walked away.
“That is a weird hyung. Ah, never mind him noona. Please continue.” Yugyeom said.
He blushed. Haha. I saw him blushed. Hahah.
“So I was saying…”
I continued explaining to them that since they are searching for something equivalent to sin2x they should change cos2x to 1-sin2x. They computed it and tada, they finished it.
“Oh, noona is so good in math.” Bambam said.
“No, I’m not that good. It’s just that maybe I have encountered that question before.”
“Thank you, noona. We owe it to you.” Yugyeom said.
“Yah, it is fine. Hope I helped you.”
“You helped them a lot.” Youngjae said.
“Yah hyung, you’re a useless hyung. You said you are going to teach us math then you don’t know how to answer it.” Bambam said while they are on their way to their dorm.
I simply laughed at them.
I went back to my dorm. Oh yes I forgot, I’m all alone here. I have no roommates anymore.
Someone suddenly called me. Unknown number.
“Ahm, hello?”
“Is this Rhianne?” the man asked me.
“Oh, JYP?”
“Yes. Start packing your things now. You’ll be moving to another dorm. I’ll be putting you together with 15&. In one hour, I’ll ask someone to help you move your things.”
Really?
We ended our conversation. I immediately packed my things. While packing my things, I saw my portraits of Mark’s face together with my favorite notebook. I smiled when I saw the picture.
I am going to admit, I really like Mark.
