Happy birthday to me, Cobie sings to himself. It's four in the morning and Cobie was sitting on the grass at the back of the pack house. He had laid a blanket on the ground, to keep the damp grass from touching his bum. He has on a pair of jeans and a neon blue jumper, his hair was styled into his normal fringe and resting on his eyelids. He really needs a haircut.
Just like every year, Cobie's phone rang when it was four thirty. He stared at the phone as it buzzes once. It was a restricted number so he had to be cautious. The phone rings again and cuts off, it does this one more time and Cobie smiled. The next time it rang, he picks it.
"Hey C."
"Someone's getting old."
Cobie laughed, his head falling back so he could stare at the sky. "I don't feel any different."
"Yeah but the grey hairs will start sprouting." The person says and Cobie laughed. "Hey, Pa's with me."
"C, it's too early, he should be asleep."
The line falls silent and there's a sound of movement and then someone says. "My little rainbow."
The tears rushed forward and down his face. Cobie hadn't even known how much he had really missed this voice till he had heard it. He sniffed and tried to wipe his tears off with his free hand but they just kept rushing out.
"Pa..."
"Rainbow, my little boy."
"Pa, I'm not little. I'm 25." Cobie sniffs, a watery smile on his face.
"Happy birthday, little one."
"Pa...!"
"Take care of yourself, we'll see you soon, alright?"
"I promise."
There's another scratchy sound and then a familiar voice is back on. "It's really cold here and Pa's shaking, yes pa- I can see you." Cobie laughed. "Stay safe yeah and have fun today."
"I'll try. Have fun today too! You're 25."
"I will! Love you, Rainbow."
Cobie laughed, his tears still sliding down his face. "Love you, C."
The call ends after that and Cobie lets the phone drop to the grass. He sighed as he stared at the sky that was starting to lighten up. Even after all these years it still sucked, it still hurts just as much. He hums as he stared at the sky, not sure of what to do. He had never celebrated his birthday, all he did was watch a new series and ordered pizza and chicken wings. He stays out there for an hour before getting up, he grabs his blanket and made his way inside. He was halfway up the stars when Erik walked down the hallway. Cobie gives the Alpha a shy wave.
"Morning."
"Good morning to you too." Erik said. The Alpha walked closer and wrapped his hands around Cobie. "Happy birthday, Precious."
"Happy birthday to you too, Erik." Cobie replies, burying his nose in Erik's chest. Cobie would never understand why the man never wore a shirt to sleep. Maybe that's what he should get Erik as a birthday gift.
Erik pressed a kiss to Cobie's hair and pulls back. He cups Cobie's cheeks and locked eyes with him. "Why are you up so early? Were you crying?" Erik asked, bending a little so he could make sure he was seeing the right thing and yes, Cobie had been crying. His lashes were clumped together and his eyes were rimmed red. "Did something happen? Is something wrong?"
Cobie shook his head. "I'm fine." The vet knew he had been saying this a lot and he knew that Erik doubted he was really okay but what else could he say?
"You sure?" Erik asked, tilting his head to the side a little.
Cobie nods. "Why are you up anyway?"
Erik pulls his hands away from Cobie's face and uses his right hand to rub his chest. "I felt a light ache here and I knew it was you."
"I'm sorry. Why don't you go to sleep and I'll just read till the sun comes up?" Cobie offered. He takes Erik's hand in his and led him towards his room. Erik nods and follows his mate. He happily let Cobie lead him to the door, into the bedroom and back under the duvet.
"Read to me?" Erik asks as Cobie settled onto the bed.
"You sure? I'm reading Delirium by Lauren Oliver." Cobie asks as he rests against the headboard of the board.
"I've heard about that book." Erik says then stifles a yawn. The Alpha smacks his lips and places his head on Cobie's lap. Cobie pulls out his phone, his fingers settle in Erik's hair and he began to stroke it softly as he read. His fingers wove through Erik's hair as he read out loud, his voice soft and low. It doesn't take long for Erik to fall asleep on Cobie's lap, actually it takes half a chapter. Cobie looked at the Alpha on his lap and just...looked at him. The smooth skin, his trimmed eyebrow - which Cobie could bet his salary was Gabriel's hand work, his pointed nose, full lips and little ears.
"Happy birthday to you, Erik." Cobie said. "Happy birthday to you, my mate." Cobie whispered, still weaving his fingers through Erik's hair. "I'm happy I'm not spending today by myself. At least, I share today with you."
Cobie lets himself say just those words, he couldn't reveal anymore. He couldn't really ask for the one thing he wanted but he'll take what he can get. He ran a finger down Erik's forehead to his nose. He couldn't believe, this stupidly attractive, angry hulk with a working brain was his mate. This man who could say incredibly cheesy and stupid things was his mate. This man who fought with wolves was his mate. He pressed two fingers to his lips and pressed those fingers to Erik's cheek.

Cobie falls asleep halfway through chapter four. He remembers falling asleep in an awkward position because he hadn't wanted to wake Erik and now, he's awakened to find himself lying on the bed, the duvet on the floor. He must have kicked it off in his sleep. The room was empty, there was no sound of running taps nor was Erik anywhere within sight. Cobie gets off the bed and made his way to Erik's bathroom. He hmm'ed when he sees how neat the bathroom was. If the Mayor of the town was this neat personally, it's no wonder the environment was the same. He rinses his mouth with the Listerine mouthwash before making his way out of the room. Since Erik's office was the closest, he made his way there first. He was about to knock when he hears Erik yell.
"Get the fuck out of my office!"
Cobie with concern for whoever was on the receiving end of Erik's wrath, quickly pushed the door open. He strides into the room, leaving the door open just in case whoever wants to run out runs out. Turns out he was wrong because standing in front of Erik's table were three people. A girl in between two boys. They all turned to him immediately he enters the room.
"Precious, you're awake." Erik says, looking away from the three people to Cobie who just nods.
The three all focused on Cobie before the girl screams while she stomped her foot like a five-year-old. "You can't expect us to believe...this thing with the weird eyes is your mate, right?"
Cobie closes his eyes and takes a deep breath, when he opens them again he's sure they were an angry red, matching that of Erik's who was growling. Not wanting the Alpha to smash, Cobie takes one good look at the three before walking past them and around the table till he got to Erik. He pushes Erik back gently and stands in front of him, his palms pressed flat on the table. He has been in Astir for weeks now, he has been welcomed even with his eyes and he isn't going to allow three fucking skinny idiots spoil his day, to spoil Erik's day.
"I think an introduction is in order." Cobie says, his voice sickening sweet.
The boy on the right the girl steps forward then, a scowl on his face. "I am Quinten, she's Destinee." Quinten says, pointing to the girl in between them and then at the last boy who was just watching everything play out, like a wise man. "He's Kerry."
Cobie stared at them with a bored expression on his face. Quinten and Destinee were the same height, both of them sporting red hair. Kerry on the other hand had his hair cut low, almost like a crew cut. They were all standing defensively and Cobie wants to turn around and ask Erik what the fuck was going on. He didn't need to because Kerry finally speaks up. Maybe he was not as wise as Cobie thought, because his next words wanted to make Cobie punch him repeatedly in the nose till it was shattered and blood was gushing out heavily.
"We dated Alpha Erik."
"We've all helped him through his rut, taken every thrust and have been brought m-"
"Shut the fück up, Quinten!" Erik barks from his position behind Cobie. He takes a step forward but Cobie stops him.
"Then why are you here?" Cobie asked the trio, raising his brow mockingly at them. "You all used to date him so why are you here? He's mine now." Cobie said, reaching around him to pull Erik closer. He tilts his head as he stared at the three while Erik wraps his hands around his waist.
Kerry scoffs and cross his arms across his chest. "You expect us to believe you are his true mate? Those things do not exist."
Cobie rolled his eyes. "Okay, let me make this clear and I'm going to say this once because I'm getting angry and you don't want that. Trust me." Cobie warned, staring at them dead on. Jealousy was a foreign feeling to Cobie and he was trying so hard to push it down. "Erik Tomlinson is mine, he is my mate. No one touches him beside me, no one kisses him beside me and I swear to your goddess, if any of you try any damn thing or I hear any fucking thing about any of you approaching Erik, I will put a bullet between your eyes."
The three visibly gulps and Cobie mentally smiles in satisfaction. "Are we clear?"
The three nod, albeit hesitantly.
"Then get the fuck out because unlike my mate here, I won't wait. I will kill you three right here, right now." Erik growled and Cobie just shrugged at the three. He leans back against Erik who was still holding on to him. The three looked like they were about to say something but they must have changed their minds because they scurried out of the room without looking back. When the door shuts behind them, Cobie turned around to face Erik.
"You dated all three? Seriously?"
"They are old news."
Cobie pushed Erik back so they could have space for the goddess in the middle. "They spent your rut with you."
"Precious, they are old news. I didn't even feel half of what I feel about you with them."
The ugly jealously that had reared it's head in Cobie mind refused to be placated by that. He shoved Erik, the Alpha allowed himself to be and fell into his chair. Cobie climbed onto his lap and wound his hands around Erik's neck, he grinds down and bit his lip as he stared at Erik who let out a loud groan, his hands falling to Cobie's waist.
"No one gets to touch you except me." Cobie commanded and Erik voices his agreement. "No one gets to touch you besides me." Cobie repeats. He takes the tip of Erik's ear into his mouth and nips a little, the Alpha bucks underneath him and they both moan at the friction. Erik was already hard underneath him and Cobie couldn't help but smirk. He himself was at half mast. He's pretty sure Erik could smell his arousal.
"I want to hear you to say it." Cobie whispered, his lips brushing Erik's.
"No one gets to touch me besides you." Erik says, breaking off into a moan as Cobie grinds down again.
"Good." Cobie says and gets off Erik's lap. He walks away from the couch to the window. Huh, he forgot that was there. Erik stared at his mate with wide eyes. What the fuck had just happened? One minute he had Cobie in his arms and the next there was nothing. Fuck, he didn't even get a kiss.
"Cobie..."
Cobie turned around and smiles at Erik like nothing had taken place seconds ago. "Yes, Erik?"
"At least give me a kiss."
Cobie's phone vibrated in his pocket. He pulls it out and check it. It was a text from Gabriel and it read, happy birthday boo! I'm in your room but you're not here. Where are you? I wanna hug you! can't still believe you and Erik share the same bday. Hurry up! Cobie smiles and pushed the phone back into his pocket. He finds Erik still staring at him, a small pout on his lps.
Cobie makes his way back to Erik. He gets on his lap again and this time Erik's hands settle on Cobie's ass, lightly squeezing. Cobie couldn't help the moan he let out, especially when Erik squeezed again. He grabbed both of Erik's hand and pulls them away from his ass, he trailed kisses up the Alpha's neck till he got to his ears and whispered.
"If you're a good today, I'll give you a kiss at night."
"Cobie..."
"If you're good today, I'll call you daddy when we have sex. I'll scream it so loud as you fuck me hard and fast like you want to. I'll beg for more with that same word and will come with your name on my lips. Would you like that?"
He recieves a low moan from Erik, whose eyes were bright red. Cobie placed one kiss on Erik's jaw before clambering off his lap. Erik stared at him, his pupils dilated so wide with just a ring of green were around the edge. Cobie smirks in satisfaction. He winks at Erik before making his way to the door, a little bit uncomfortable by his tight pants pressing against his hard on. He didn't think this through. He stops when he has his fingers wrapped around the door knob and turned to look at the Alpha.
"Will you be good?"
Erik who had his head pressed on the table, replies with a thumbs up.

Cobie was still smiling to himself as he made his way to his room. On his way out of Erik's office, he sees a couple of elderly men and women coming up the stairs and he guesses they were heading towards Erik. True to his words, Gabriel was waiting outside Cobie's door. Immediately he sees Cobie, he pulls him in for a tight hug and practically screamed happy birthday in his ear.
"Thank you."
"What are your plans for the day?" Gabriel asks but before Cobie could reply, he speaks again. "Whatever they were cancel them. Erik got you a little something and you have to wear it to the party."
Cobie stared at Gabriel with wide eyes. "What party?"
"The party celebrating you and Erik's birth, duh." Gabriel says and as if agreeing with his words, loud music began to boom from outside. I've got new rules, I count 'em.
Cobie highly doubts they planned this entirely overnight. He was sure it had just been in celebration of Erik. He didn't want to intrude, he had already gotten the best gift this morning with that phone call. He didn't want to impose and was about to vocalise it when Gabriel presses a finger to his lips.
"It's starts by twelve! He'll pick you up." Gabriel grins. "Everyone is going to be there, they're waiting to meet you." Gabriel presses a kiss to his cheek and walked away, skipping as he does. Cobie watched his friend go and shakes his head fondly. Curiosity gets the best of him and he ends up walking into his room to see what Erik had gotten him. Lying on the bed was a box and a paper bag. He grabs the paper bag first and laughs out loud as he pulls out the teddy bear with a rainbow on it's stomach. There was a note attached to it.
Happy birthday.
I tried getting a teddy with rainbow eyes but there was none, so I got the next best thing. When I saw it, I was reminded of you. Cute, small and colourful.
Cobie laughs as that the last part. He places the teddy to the side and grabbed the box. He pulls out a pair of dark blue jeans and a grey long-sleeved shirt. It looked simple but the materials felt so soft and when Cobie sees the tag, so expensive. He checks the time and winced, it was eleven thirty. He sets about getting ready, it was a party and he had to look his best.
By twelve he was ready and waiting and by a minute past twelve, there was a knock on the door. Cobie takes a deep breath to calm his rapidly beating heart before pulling open the door. He gasped in horror when he sees what Erik was wearing.
"Oh my god!" They chorus as they pointed at each other.
"Why the fuck do we match?"
"You did this! You planned this." Cobie said, pointing a finger at Erik who looked equal parts confused and shocked.
"What do you mean I planned this? You gave this to me." Erik said, staring at Cobie with a raised brow. "You told Gabriel to give me this. It was in a box and everything."
Cobie shook his head. "No. Gabriel said you gave me this."
It dawns on them at the same time and they groan. There was a second, two, three of silence before they burst into laughter. The situation had gone a total three sixty. Erik had on the same outfit as Cobie, the same shirt, the same jeans and heck, the same colour of shoes and that was just by chance. The music was loud and Cobie could hear people talking and laughing outside.
"We look adorable." Erik finally says after catching his breath.
"Of course we do. Have you seen us?!" Cobie replied, motioning to both of them. "Did the teddy come from you?"
"Yeah, I picked that out." Erik says, his gaze briefly dropping to the ground and his cheeks pinkening a bit. "Did you like it?"
"Loved it!" Cobie said, bounding forward to press a kiss to Erik's cheek. "I'm sorry but I didn't get you anything but I will grant you one wish as your birthday gift."
"Just one?" Erik asks, stepping closer.
Cobie nods. "One. So choose wisely."
Erik doesn't waste time, he takes Cobie hand in his and speaks. "This."
Cobie frowns in confusion. "What?"
"This. I want to hold your hand throughout today. I want to walk around with our hands swinging between us. I want people to see that we are getting there. That you are mine."
Cobie blinks up at the Alpha. He licks his lips before asking. "Is that what you want? Are you sure? There are no takebacks."
"This is what I want." Erik replies with conviction and who was Cobie to disagree. He intertwines their hands together and leaned forward to press his lips to Erik's. It was a close mouthed, chaste but still tingly kiss.
They walk down the stairs today, small smiles on their faces as they headed towards the backyard. When Erik steps out onto the green grass, the large multitude of people who were all standing with either, beer, cocktails, juice boxes and other sorts of drinks, all bowed. Cobie couldn't help but stare at the Alpha. This man had the respect of thousands of people. He kept staring as Erik bows to the crowd too. Fück, his heart can't handle all this.
"You ready?" Erik asks him.
"As I'll ever be."
Erik grins at him. As they walk towards the people, the Alpha turns to him to say. "Have I told you how amazing you smell?"
Cobie rolled his eyes. "I smell like you, Cujo."
"These dog references have to stop." Erik says, bumping Cobie's shoulder with his.
"I don't think I like you today." Cobie shot back, trying to yank his hand away from Erik's. The Alpha's gripped tightened and he even pulls Cobie closer. He moves towards the vet and whispered in his ear.
"You're mine to have and to hold today."
Before Cobie could get a chance to reply, Randall appears out of nowhere and pulls him into a tight hug. Erik doesn't let go of his hand so Cobie pats Randall's back with his free hand. After Randall came Se Ju and then the kids all flock to him. That's when Erik lets go. Cobie kneels and hugs everyone of them down before he and Erik were tackled to the grass in a big hug. Word about it being Cobie's birthday too must have gone round because Erik wasn't the only one greeted by the thousands of people present. No one shoved Cobie to the side and focused only on Erik.
No one fixates on his eyes and just treated him like he was a part of this large, well-knit family. Not once in his entire life had Cobie spoken to the amount of people he had spoken to today, not once in his entire life had Cobie smiled for as long as he had today. He just couldn't stop. Jesse had come up to wish him a happy birthday too. Even Michel had given him a tight hug and whispered happy birthday in his ears. Thankfully, Cobie didn't see any sign of the trio and he preferred it stayed that way. There were long table spread out throughout the back, they were filled with all sorts of food and drinks, even frozen yoghurt. Gabriel had walked up to them with a big smile on his face and neither Erik or Cobie slaps him upside the head for tricking them, they just give him a hug. The entire day had felt so glorious and Cobie wished they were here to spend it with him.
Erik never left his side. The Alpha walked around introducing Cobie to everyone as his date. He had whispered awful birthday puns in his ears throughout the course of the day. Stuff ranging from did you hear about the tree's birthday? It was a sappy one! to Moby Dick celebrates his birthday by having a huge whale of a time with his friends. Cobie has never laughed as hard has he had today either.
The sky was dark now, the cake had been cut and the pack sang the happy birthday song. Not just to Erik but Cobie too. Both of them standing side by side in their matching outfit. Everyone was counting down to the fireworks, apparently it was a tradition. Cobie was in front of Erik, a small cup of mint chocolate ice cream in his hand. Erik had his arms wrapped around Cobie's waist, bending down a little to take the small spoons of ice cream Cobie offered every other minute.
"So how was your day?" He asks, his voice soft.
"It was great. How was yours?"
"The best." Erik replied, pressing a kiss to Cobie's hair. The people around them were still counting but it sounded muffled to both Cobie and Erik's ears. It seemed like they were the only two people in the world at that moment.
"8, 7, 6."
"How about a kiss? You did promise me one and I've been good." Erik asks and Cobie shakes his head.
"Please." The Alpha begs and Cobie turned around in his arms. He looks up at Erik just as the crowd chants, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Cobie goes on his tip toe, one hand going around Erik's neck as he kissed the Alpha underneath the night sky, underneath the colourful exploding lights. Erik kisses back with passion, his hands resting right on Cobie's ass. They pull back after a few minutes, their forehead pressed together.
"Happy birthday, Precious."
"Happy birthday, Peaches."
