Alex's POV
It was now the middle of August I couldn't believe how these past 2 months just flew by I spent my entire summer with my family,friends, Demi's family,Jeremy and Demi since Demi's 22nd birthday was in 2 days I planned a big surprise party for her I asked Dianna and Dallas for help while Hailey,Perla,Jennifer and Jolene are going to help me set up everything and to keep Demi from knowing about it. As we're at the table talking about what to do Dianna walks into the kitchen to go make a little snack while we get everything settled. Once Dianna leaves Dallas breaks the silence and she tells me
"How do you feel that you're leaving in just 4 days.?" she said I thought about it and I felt a lump in my throat but I shook it off and said
"Honestly...I feel scared but at the same time happy because I'll be doing what I love helping others across the world." I said with a smile
"Why do you feel scared.? if I told you this 2 months ago your response would've been I'm excited to go because I'm helping others and I'm not scared because I'll be safe. What's changed that made you feel scared what's making you feel this way.?" she said I was hoping she wouldn't say that because I didn't mentally prepare myself in case she asked me this my smile dropped and I had to be honest with her
"Dallas I'm going to be honest with you but you cannot tell Demi this because it'll drive her insane promise me you won't tell her." I said she looks at me confused and she says
"Alex I'm her sister I ha-" I cut her off and say
"Dallas promise me that you won't tell her do it for me please....please" I said her eyes were filled with concern she looks down and she bites her lip and says
"I promise.." she said I take a deep breath and said
"I'm scared that I might have to fight into combat in case something does go wrong I'm afraid that if I do fight I won't comeback to see all of you, they said I won't have to but if things get way out of hand and we're in the middle of a cross fire we don't have a choice but to take drastic measures to make sure other people around us are safe and that we're safe."
"Alex....don't think that you won't come back alive because you will I've seen you at your worst and I know you've been through hell this past year and I know you've been hit by bullets many times, put in the hospital many times and.. even died for a second but you managed to fight through it don't say you won't come back You Will Come Back I know it Demi knows it, Jeremy knows it, we all know it you're a brave young girl no a brave young woman who will save people on the other side of the world and come back with that signature smile at we all love." she said I give her a warm smile and we hug each other tightly
"Thank you." I whispered in her ear
"You're welcome you're family I'm always here." she whispered back we let go and Dianna walks in and says
"I made cookies who would like some.?" she said
"Me!" shouted Maddie from the living room we all take a little break and watch a movie on the couch while we spend the day together until Demi get's back
Demi's POV
I told Alex I had stuff to do at school but in reality I lied I was actually going to meet Hailey,Jennifer,Jolene and Perla to talk to them to help me plan a going away party the day Alex leaves. I decided to meet them at the diner nearby once I get inside I see all of them sitting at a table drinking milkshakes and Jennifer messing around with the whip cream once they see me they all get up and say
"Hey!" They said all together
"We missed you Demi.!" said Jennifer I laugh and say
"Jennifer you guys saw me yesterday remember we had one of our legendary movie nights." I said they laugh and Jennifer says
"Yeah that was yesterday 24 hours ago that's a long time without you guys" she said jokingly
"Okay since Jen is done with her whatever she's talking about what do you need us to help you with Demi.?" Said Hailey
"Okay you all know that Alex is leaving in just a couple days" I said they all nod their heads and Jolene said
"Yeah what about it.?" she said
"I was wondering if you can all help me plan a going away party the day she leaves and after we can all go to the military base and say goodbye before she gets on the plane." I said they all smile and Jennifer starts to giggle a little and she says
"Sure we would love to help you out what do you want us to do.?" said Jennifer
"If it involves hard lifting Jennifer wouldn't be right for the job." said Perla everyone laughs and Jennifer flips her off and smiles at her and says
"Hey fuck you aha for any one of you guys I'm going to help out anyway that I can." she said
"Thanks you guys now c'mon let's order some food and get to it" I said
After 2 hours in the diner we planned on a party and barbecue on the deck with just close friends and family basically like the fourth of July but this one was different it was saying goodbye to the girl I love.
Alex's POV
It's already 3 pm and Demi isn't home yet I called Jennifer to see if they got everything ready for Demi's birthday and if they were still coming over tomorrow to help me buy her gift at least she finally answers and I said
"Hey Jen did you guys go to party city and buy the things we need for the party.?"
"We're actually here right now buying a few things but other than that yeah we got everything for Demi's birthday."
"Cool thanks for the help you guys I owe you big time."
"Ahah no problem we'll see you later okay."
"Yeah see ya soon take care loser bye!" I said
"Bye bitch." Jen said while laughing
When I hang up Dianna walks into the living room and she's holding a box and she said
"Alex someone came by and dropped this off for you I signed for it you since you were on the phone here you go sweetie."she said I was kinda curious on what it was she hands me the box and I said
"Thanks Dianna." I said with a smile I open the box and I gasp for a second Maddie and Dallas look at me curiously and Maddie says
"What's in the box Alex.?" she said
"My military uniform it's finally here." I said they all crowd around me and I lift up the jacket I'll be wearing I rub my thumb over the stitched patch that has my name sown onto it "A.Johnson" it said Dianna puts her arm around me and says
"Go put it on sweetie to make sure it's a right fit." she said I nod my head and pick up the box and head straight into my room it had everything I needed black combat boots and a dark green camouflage jacket and pants and a hat to go along with it. Once I had everything on I saw myself in the mirror and all the thoughts ran into my head was I making the right decision onto actually going through with this I shake it off and walk downstairs Dallas and Maddie looked at me and I saw the tears in Dianna's eyes
"Dianna are you okay why are you crying.?" I said to her she wipes her eyes and says
"It's just that you look so brave in that uniform and you're doing it for a good cause and I'm going to miss you."
"Aww Dianna I'm not leaving yet you guys are still stuck with me for a couple days." I said laughing Dianna walks up to me and hugs me and says
"Honey we just love you so much and we're just going to miss your smile around please come back safe,"
"I will Dianna I promise." I said I'm still hugging her and she whispers in my ear
"Call me mom sweetie you're a part of this family now." she said
"You'll always be apart of it I love you Alex." she said
"I love you too...mom and don't worry about a thing okay I'll be safe." I said we let go and wipe our tears Dallas and Maddie smile at me and they hug me too we all let go and walk into the living room and they decided to help me adjust the uniform a little since it was a little too big then the door opens and I turn around and I see Demi she smiles at me and when she sees the uniform on me her smile drops
"Demi.? are you okay." I said I can see the tears forming in her eyes and her lip were quivering and she couldn't get the words to come out
"Demi..." I said one last time I was getting worried and she said
"I-I'm sorry I need a minute.." she said as she quickly runs towards the backyard she has her hand covering her mouth and I can hear her holding in her sobs
"Demi wait!" I said I run after her and I couldn't see her anywhere I walk towards my old tree house and I hear quiet sobbing coming from the inside I climb up and I open the bottom door from it and I see her sitting Indian style sobbing into her hands I walk behind her and I sit next to her. Once she sees me sit down she buries her head onto my chest and holds onto my jacket like if her life depended on it and she sobbed really hard I wrapped my arms around her and I said
"Demi what's wrong..baby please I can't see you this hurt what's wrong.?" I said she stops sobbing and she says
"I thought I was ready but clearly I'm not when I saw you in your uniform I realized I don't have a lot of time with you left and I don't want you to say goodbye to me and me worrying if it'll be the last thing you'll ever say to me." she said my heart broke when she said that I used all my strength not to cry and it worked I rub my thumb across her face wiping away the tears and our eyes met and said
"Demi we still have a couple of days together and don't worry about my last words to you because no matter what it'll always be I love you don't worry about me when I'm gone because I'll be okay I'll come back to you no matter what." I said
"You promise.?" she said I took a long pause and I looked into her deep brown chocolate brown and eyes and said
"Yes...I promise." she wraps her arms around me and hugs me tight and we stay like that for a while and i said
"C'mon baby lets get down from here and go eat dinner with everyone while I go change into something." I said
"No don't change stay that way something about you in that uniform makes you look brave like you were meant to wear it." she says I look down and I smile she walks up to me and lifts my chin and she looks into my eyes and kisses me on the lips her soft lips always sent chills down my spine we let go and walk into the kitchen to sit down with everyone. As we're eating dinner the thought about what Demi said back there kept repeating in my head she was right a few more days and I was leaving and a part of me knew that I wasn't ready myself to go away either.
