Chapter Twenty One
DEV'S P.O.V.
The week passed by just like that............Avni continued her stay with us enthusiastically while me and Shona were trying our best to spend each moment with her, enjoyably............
We took her around different places which she had heard of in her picture books.........we felt a part of us being born again as our cutie squealed in joy every time she came across a place or thing of her choice...........we both knew we were trying to find our Pia in her.............
Sameer had refused to change his statement..........the police had been keeping us on a track as usual............any amount of threats and torture couldn't compel him to speak the truth.............guess he wished for our sorrows more than his peaceful life.........
Finally it was the day when Ved and Elena were supposed to leave for Chennai.........Shona was certainly not aware of this as astonishingly, her bestie Elena had not even called her once during this past one week...........Shona would keep nagging me to call up Ved and find out if Elena was ok as she was not even picking up her calls...........and here I was waiting for the right moment, to confront Elena alias Aarohi Singhania...........
Finally the day arrived, I was expecting a sudden visit from Elena...........I knew she would come back to take Avni............and I was just waiting for her to walk into my trap............I purposely asked Shona to take Avni along with her to office..........Shona was reluctant initially but later on she agreed...........after seeing of my two beautiful girls, I waited back at home to welcome her highness, Elena!!!!!!!
Avni.............baby where are you?..........see Mumma's here to take you........come soon we have to go back home...........we'll miss the flight baby, come soon.........
She walked past ignoring me, maintaining my poise, I kept sitting on the couch as she had a tour of our apartment on her own and when she couldn't find either Shona or Avni, she came back...........without any option left, she asked me rudely........
Where's Avni..........tell her I'm here to take her along, ask her to come out fast.....
Woah!!!!!!!!!attitude...........great, but does it suit a person who has been lying for the past 3 years?
Which Avni are you talking about Elena?.........or should I say Aarohi............as far as I remember, there's no one called Avni here.............I guess you are mistaken.........you probably got into the wrong place..........
I continued swapping through my mails as she was getting impatient every moment...........
What nonsense...........what games are you trying to play..........Ved had dropped Avni here a week back.............he had said that he will take her along when we go back to Chennai.............and now your are behaving as if you have never known Avni............what have you done to my daughter Dev?...........answer me!!!
I looked at her as if I still couldn't make sense of what she was talking..........she looked baffled at my behavior...........
Wait.............hold on, let me recollect...........Ved did come here, but he didn't get Avni along.............instead he got Pia along...........he dropped Pia with us and said that she's our daughter and his liar wife had kept him in dark for all these years that she was their child.............he said that he doesn't wish our Pia to be spoilt by being with you, he said he doesn't wish to spoil her future..........he apologized for having us suffer for our daughter all this while when she was present right here, just infront of us...........and hence, our Pia is no longer you Avni Mrs. Aarohi Singhania............so I would really appreciate if you would move out on your own and let me and Shona live peacefully with our child.........
Shocked would be an understatement for her...........she would never have expected me to come across this truth so easily...........something which she had concealed for all these years..........she fell onto the couch emotionally perturbed as my heart failed to even help her out.........
Remember the day I had come to your place to pick up Avni............I had seen the portrait hanging in your flat..........you probably didn't notice but I very well did............in that picture, an infant Avni was being held by you, and that pic was taken before your marriage to Ved...........what grabbed my attention was the chain hanging around her neck.........how can I forget that chain Elena?...........coz it was the only gift I had given Shona before we got separated, she couldn't wear her mangalsutra around so I had given this chain to her as a substitute for it.........and my Shona must have placed it around Pia's neck when she was born..........how mean of you Elena............Shona trusts you so much.........and this is what you give her back in return.............shame on you Elena............shame on you!!!!!!!!!
She fell down over the couch with a thud...........tears rolled down her eyes as she couldn't look straight into mine............how would she, she had traited us...........Shona has trusted her so much and all she did was cheated her............Shona gave her th responsibility of our child and she has been disguising our Pia into her Avni for all these years..........
Did Ved anytime tell you how we ended up together?
Her question was sudden and caught me off guard...........No.............I had never questioned Ved about his love story..........infact it never occurred to me that I should know the details.........I had been so engrossed in my own sorrows that I never looked around to see how other people have been fairing in their lives............
No............but I never asked him.........never felt the need of asking..........but I know he loves you so much.............I'm sure you'll must have had a love marriage.......
She let out a sobby chuckle as her eyes met mine.............they held so many unsaid emotions............was I missing out on something?............did I wrong her by accusing her straight away?
Did Sona tell you what had happened after we fled from the hospital leaving Pia behind?
Another unexpected question............she kept starring at me to gain answers and all I could do was nod hesitantly..............Shona did tell me how Elena dropped her home and went back to get Pia home............but then she returned alone and said she had kept Pia safely with her trusted person............but then what happened back at the hospital with Elena and Pia wasn't known to either me or Shona.........
Then you should know what happened exactly 3 years back............the day when all our lives changed, for bad...........the day which forced me to dive into gallons of guilt, something which I still carry, on my shoulders..........
I sat down opposite her, probing her to tell me what all had happened back then.........she should be given a chance to explain her part of the story...........every coin has two sides and one should check both the sides before giving away a verdict...............
How long will Sona take to come back...........I don't want her to hear out all this, I have killed my conscious everyday to hide the truth from her, I just cannot spill the beans to her..........
I assured her that Shona and Avni will be back only by afternoon for lunch, so we have a good 3 hours before she tells me all what she has been holding back in her heart all these years............with that she wiped off her tears and started narrating the horrific tale which led Shona to be separated from her child and forced Elena to change her identity and live a lifestyle she despised the most...........
It all began the day when Sameer spotted Sona on the road roaming around lost............she was thrown out of her house by her dad..........she collided with Ved's car while trying to escape Sameer...........that day was the most horrific day of our lives..........
