Chapter 23

I awake to my side throbing. I look at the alarm clock on the night stand and see that it's seven in the morning. I try going back to sleep but my body isn't as tired as it was last night. As I sit up in bed, the pain in my right side shoots though me. I lift up my shirt and can see how big the cut is. The only place I can think of hurting it was when I crawled under the gate and the end of it is what most likely cut me.

I decide to take a shower and then put on somthing simple. Gunner comes along with me downstairs to grab breakfast. I don't see Tobias but I do see Christina. I guess she couldn't sleep either.

"Morning." I say.

"What are you doing up so early?" She asks with a slight smile.

"I could ask you the same thing." I say smiling back.

Slowly I sit down next to her not wanting to rip the stiches like I did the time I got shot in the shoulder. Christina notices me acting like an old person.

"What wrong with you? Baby got you acting slow?"

"No!" I say smirking. "I guess the end of the gate caught my side while I was trying to get under. It's no big deal. The nurse gave me stiches and I just don't want to rip them out."

"Glad your okay then I guess." The conversation goes still for a minute untill Christina brings up the topic of Ethan.

"Do you think he will lie to us? You know, about the plans?" She talks a little quiiter now so only I can hear her.

"I don't know. I just hope that he doesn't lie because I just want things to be right in this world. We were so close to the coming of peace. All that risking for nothing."

"Tris! Don't talk like that! You sacraficed your life the the lives of others and that was all for nothing? Yeah, I don't think that would be you."

I give her a look. "You know, it's much more complicated than just that. With Evelyn making all these new serums and being able to regenerate the minds of the people, she's capable of making the war happen all over again." I can only imagin how hard it has been for Tobias with his own evil mother being the center of something that is so huge; so dangerous. I haven't taken the time to talk to him about it as much as I'd like to.

"It's something we all are going to have to deal with and only time can tell what will happen next." Says Christina. I want to tell her that its more then just what time can tell but I don't have much of the energy this morning to talk about it. The thought of what Tobias told me on the train comes back to my mind. When Evelyn threaten to harm my child. Everything becomes harder to cope with when something so small and dear to me is to be harmed. I need to talk to Tobias.

****************

I rest a little in my room untill in the late afternoon, Tobias comes in and tells me that Ethan was wanting to talk to us about the meeting. We walk down the hallway to a unknown hallway which I haven't seen before.

"How do you know where you're going?" I ask.

"Jessica told me that he wanted to meet us down here. She gave directions and I guess we take this door."

I follow Tobias into the large wooden door to where I find Christina, Jessica, and Ethan already sitting down at a round, metal table. They all have serious looks on their faces.

"Please sit." Says Ethan in a low voice. I sit down and Tobias takes a seat next to me.

"Now we have discussed the troubles in Chicago and we will be able to help. There is only one problem, at the beginning of the meeting the police official and general agreed that we don't take immediate action yet. We will be able to interfere in two weeks time." I realize that Ethan did spill out a little lie because even though we weren't there to see the beginning of the meeting, Chris kept saying that there was no time and that he was right when he said that Evelyn was capable of taking over more than it was possible to think of. Christian's Candor manner shows as she squints at Ethan. I grab Tobias's hand under the table and squeeze it a little. He gives me an understanding look reassuring me that he see's the flaw too. "Is that okay with you?"

"Like that sounds okay." Says Christina through gritted teeth. " My family is stuck in the city and you can't speed up the process?"

"For other reasons we can't do any more than that." Says Ethan calmly. Christina then looks at Tobias and I as if we are to back her up but really I don't have anything to say. She walks out, slamming the door behind her leaving a chilling echo in the room. Christina's right though because we really don't have time to just sit around and wait for a miracle to happen. Everyday we waste is one day where she's building her army to control, giving the memories back to those who lost it before.

"That's all I really wanted to tell you. You are still welcomed to stay for now if you like."

"We'll keep it in mind." Says Tobias. And with that we leave the room to Ethan and Jessica.

"I'm not happy with the outcome." I say frustrated.

"I know Tris. I have an idea though if your willing to hear it."

"What is it?"

"We can leave this place and take the train back to Chicago and perhaps try to do something ourselves while we wait for backup. You know it would probably help Christina with her family too."

"But what about our family Tobias? I don't know if I can make it then." I find myself committing to something but I don't want to feel like a drag or someone to hold him back just because I'm pregnant.

"I'll be with you the entire time. Promise."

"I still want to stay strong and not be a-"

"You are strong to me no matter what happens."

I grab his hand again." Come on, I want to talk to you.

We settle down in his room and I sit on his bed. He comes over and sits down next to me. He leans over and kisses me on my collar bone, my cheek, my lips. I need to talk to him about my troubled thoughts about Evelyn but instead find myself wrapping my hands around his neck and kissing him back. I can't keep myself together and push him away just enough for him to notice that somethings wrong.

"I'm sorry but I really need to talk to you." He nods.

" I... I can't help but to now think about our child's danger. I mean I don't think that it would be safe for me to go back as much as I want to. I'm beginning to have second thoughts about it."

He looks at me with a puzzled look. "Tris, you're going to be fine. I've got you and I'm not going to let anything in this world harm you."

Though I still have conflicted thought about it, his soothing words and slight smile make me believe that he's right.

"Okay." I say as he kisses me again. Suddenly I feel something inside me stir. At first I think it's my stomach not feeling right because I haven't at since breakfast but instead it's the baby.

"Tobias! It's the baby...here." I move his hand over to my stomach and he looks at me wide eyed but with a huge smile covering his face. I'm happy and scared at the same time and feel the tears forming in my eyes. I come even closer to him and he wraps his arms around me as I lay my head against his shoulder and cry. I can't tell if their happy tears or fearful ones be Tobias seems to know.

"It's okay. You know, I think you would be a pretty great mother."

"I sure hope so." I say putting my hand over his hand that still rests on my stomach.

"We should probably ask Jessica where the nearest hospital is so that we can see wether it's a boy or girl."

"Tomorrow." I say. I want the moment with us to last because it's not often we get moments like these.

We stay wrapped up in each others arms until I become tired and exhausted from the day. I haven't had much sleep last night because of the stitched up wound on my hip causing me grief and I don't have much of the energy anymore to do anything else. I tell Tobias that I was going down to get something to eat but he insisted on going to get it himself so I stay laying down on his bed. When he come back up, he brings me a few pieces of bread and a glass of water.

"They didn't have anything else." He says.

"It's fine." After eating, we talk for a little longer about things that are of no importance but I keep managing to smile though the thought of having a baby soon. It can be a little scary for me to think of at times but with Tobias here, he makes me feel safe and comfortable, like I'm able to tell him anything.

We both lay down on the bed in silence until I become tired and doze off as I lay my head on his chest. He whispers something to me but I'm already too far gone.

When I awake the next morning, Tobias isn't next to me. I assume he's downstairs so I make my way to my room and get showered and dressed. I don't see Gunner anywhere either. Christina could have him so I don't worry as much. I take a look at myself in the bathroom mirror and see how big I've become. Today's the day where I can find out wether I'm having a boy or girl and it's making me nervous. I did't feel as nervous thinking about it last night but now I feel like I've got the chills every five seconds. I try and stop thinking about it and start making my way downstairs to the cafeteria. Tobias, Christina, and Jessica all sit at a table and I make my over to join them.

"Morning." Says Tobias smiling. I smile back and sit down next to him. Apparently they must have been talking about me because now everyone's smiling back.

"So," starts Jessica, "ready for your special day Tris? I know a hospital down in the city that can help you."

"Uh, yeah, I guess so." I look at Tobias who is now staring into nothing. Something tells me that he's having thoughts about this situation too.

"If you're ready we can leave now." Says Jessica.

"Four, you want to go now?" I ask him. He snaps out of his daze then nods.

"Yes," I say, "I'm ready."

*********************

Jessica drives Tobias and I to the hospital which isn't as far as I thought it would be. Christina decided that she would stay with Gunner so she didn't come. Once we are inside, Jessica walks up to the front desk lady and asks her something than Jessica motions us to follow her. We go down a number of hallways which reminds me of Erudite headquarters until she stops at another desk to talk to another lady. The lady nods and then picks up the phone and calls for someone. A few minutes later, a woman with dark brown hair and a long white coat comes up to me and introduces herself to me.

"My name is Anna. I assume you're Tris?"

"Yes." I say half nervous and half smiling.

"Please follow me." Jessica says that she'll be back later to see how we are doing so it's now just me and Tobias left with Anna who takes us into a fairly large room.

She tells me to lay down on the bed. Tobias sits down next to me with his arms crossed and an odd look on his face that I don't think I have ever seen before.

"So Tris is this your husband?" She asks.

"No, not yet," says Tobias finally speaking, "just her fiancee."

"So you're Four? At least thats what the front desk lady told me."

"Actually that's my nickname. Call me Tobias." She nods and continues putting her blue gloves on. She turns her attention back on me and starts asking me questions.

"How long do you think you've been pregnant for?"

"I... I think I've been pregnant for a while now. Probably -"

"Looks like your around seven or eight months." She says interrupting me. How can it be though? I was dead only less than five months ago. I've must have been pregnant before the the incident. I feel like I've been punched in the chest. How could the baby have survived with me not being alive then. I suddenly realize how strong the revival serum is that Caleb has given me. Now I can only imagine what Evelyn is doing with it.

She tells me to lift up my shirt and she starts poking my stomach. Then she puts a cold gel on my stomach and explains that it's easier to move around some sort of device on. As she moves it around my stomach, I turn my head to look at Tobias.

"You okay?" I whisper to him.

"Yeah. I'm just happy for you thats all."

"You mean us."

"Yes, us. I guess being a father is just something i'm going to have to learn how to be."

"You'll be a great father," I say, "Promise." I say exactly what he said to me last night when he told me that I was going to be a great mother and he seems to catch on as he holds onto my hand.

"Well congratulations Tris! It's a boy!" I feel the rush of tears as they swell my eyes. Tobias smiles and wipes some of the tears that are now falling on my cheeks.

"Have a name yet?" She asks joyfully.

"Actually yes... yes I do." Tobias looks at deeply into my eyes as I say the name.

"Andrew. After my father." Tobias moves a strand of hair from my face and comes close to my ear and whispers something for only me to hear.

"I think it's a perfect name." And with that more tears fall from my eyes and land on his hand that is half cupped around my cheek.
