"So I'm just going to check your vitals," a woman doctor says. as she picks up a small flashlight. I sit on a bed in the nurse's room, four or five beds laid here, separated by a green curtain.
The woman uses the light to check my eyes, everything seems to be fine.
"You are one lucky girl," the doctor says as she puts the flashlight down and writes some information on a piece of paper,
"What do you mean?" I ask,
"Not only are you living the dream of most women, but you surviving a life in a boy's school, and against male competitors," she says,
I didn't realise how lucky I have been since now,
"Huh, well it isn't easy," I add as she walks over to test my blood pressure.
"I can bet it has been tough, but you'll survive, you have to, for all women,"
"What do you mean?"
"Well since only males can tame a dragon, woman are still seen less than males. If you get even close to the top 50 in this competition, epically with the whole country watching, you are bound to get a name in the big books."
"Top 50, I need to get to the top 20 or my dragon will be taken from me," I say,
"Why's that?" she asks,
"My brother thinks I'm too weak to handle a war dragon,"
"A war dragon!" she exclaims,
"What?"
"A war dragon is most difficult to tame, I'd listen to your brother if I was you." She finishes up,
"All done," she says,
"Thanks,"
"One more thing, you didn't experience anything weird, or unusual in the simulation, did you?" she asks,
I think about it for a second.
"No..." I say.
"Good, if you ever need something give me a call," the doctor says,
"K, bye," I walk off.
Why did I lie? I am not sure, maybe the woman's words stuck with me. I can't trust anyone anymore.
I walk out to the main area, where Ashton and Jackson wait for me worried,
"Elena!" Ashton yells,
"Hey Ash, Brother," I say,
Wait, can I trust these guys?
"the people closer than that may be hiding things" I recall those words, maybe I can't trust them... not quite yet.
"Are you okay? I didn't know they would do that, last year they didn't, I need to go talk to them-" my brother rants on,
"I'm okay, it was just like a nap," I tell him,
"Are you sure?" my brother questions,
"Yes, I'm 110% fine," I convince him. "What about Ash, wasn't he in the simulation?" I ask,
"Yeh, I was but mine didn't last as long as yours did, in fact, no ones lasted longer than 5 hours," Ash says,
"How long was I asleep for?" I ask,
"Elena, today is the last night of camp," Jackson says,
"You were asleep for over 28 hours," Ashton adds.
You have got to be kidding me... 28 hours.
"The only person who came close to that was asleep for 12 hours, and that was Jackson," Ashton informs me, "Over 12 hours is seen as strange, so that's why he is so worried,"
"I didn't seem that long, maybe 30 minutes at the most, but 28 hours."
I look out the window, it was sunset.
After a long talk, I head back to my room. At that moment, I realise I hadn't seen Aries since we left. I dragged myself up and headed to where the dragons were kept. I snuck in.
"Aries," I called out to her while whispering, "Where are you, Aries?"
I hear the sound of a large breath out, it was Aries... She was pouting.
I push a door open to see Aries facing the door.
"Aries!" I say in excitement, she turns away from me. "you're mad huh?" I say knowing she can respond verbally. "I'm sorry, I had a lot to do," I try to face her before she turns around again,
"Don't be like that," I say, "It isn't easy you know, all of this," I say she ignores me, how I knew that, I have no idea. "Fine, I'm leaving," I say, as I walk out, her gate shuts, and I begin to walk out.
Bang, I hear the door open,
"So are you ready to forgive-" I start before I am lifted into the air.
I scream as I am lifted up, with the feet of a dragon, my legs hanged down I panic.
"Aries! Put me down! Now!" I scream, Aries was angry, I was going to die.
"I'm sorry! I'll come visit you every day! Put me down!" I scream. I drop.
I scream even louder, as I freefall from the sky.
Swoop!
My eyes are closed, as I stop falling. I shake before I realise I am not falling. I open them slowly as my hair band flies from my hair and I am riding on the back of Aries.
I am breathless but the wind blowing through my hair makes up for my loss of breath. Aries finally let me fly on her, and it was incredible.
I spread my arms out wide as I begin to laugh.
"Hahaha, Yes!" I yell as we begin to fly low towards a lake. The moonlight shimmers on the water's surface as I look and see my reflection, and then see my reflection as the shadow of a woman, taller, longer hair, the dragon was bigger. I blink twice and I return to seeing me.
I did it... I am finally a rider.
"Thank you, Aries!" I say as I hug her back. She shrugs and I fall into the water below.
I float in the middle of the water. I still am amazed I rode Aries, I tamed a dragon, I didn't care that I was wet, or she threw me off.
I swim to the surface to see Aries sitting at the edge of the lake, 50 meters away, I swim to her, I rest for a little before we fly off.
"Where did you go?" My brother leans on a tree beside the hotel entrance.
I turn to see him,
"Brother, I was... going for a run," I lie,
"Don't lie to me, where were you?" my brother asks,
"I was out to fly Aries alright, now get off my back," I say,
"Flying Aries! You don't know what you are doing? You could have fallen off,"
"I did at one point..." I mutter,
"What?"
"Nothing."
"I knew it was a bad idea to allow you to come into this school." He says,
"What is your problem? It isn't your job to tell me what to do," I say,
"I am your brother,"
"I know that, so stop acting like my mother. Do you think I am not strong enough to do this? Well, news update, I can tame a dragon Jackson, a real-life dragon," I tell him,
"I know that, but..."
"But what?"
"You still are not ready,"
"Well, will I be ready Jackson? I know you feel like you have to parent me because we don't have any anymore. They died a year ago Jackson, I know that. I have grown up, I am 16 and I am becoming stronger, and you need to accept it." I tell him.
"Fine, if you want to be like that, then have it your way. Goodnight," he says before leaving,
"Fine then!" I yell.
Me and my brother's first fight in a year.
