Misunderstood

Long ago, I had a friend

He sat by me

He held my hand

This friend was kind, he talked to me

He told me things

They wouldn't believe

There was a song, he'd sing to me

It'd sway the trees

His voice so sweet

And then one day, his light was gone

His petals drooped

He sang no song

I held his hand, I tried to see

The things he saw

The things he'd be

Weeks went by, less words were shared

His hand got loose

His eyes just stared

Soon after this, I watched him go

He crumbled fast

And decomposed

Was the ugliest thing I ever saw

I tried to help

I sang his song

But then he left, to find a friend

That might just get

The pain he was in

And after sitting, on my own

I looked down to see

A new plant had grown

I hollered down to catch it's eye

Turned out to be

Just a little guy

They took my hand, with their smaller one

And grinned at me

Spoke of the sun

We shared the rain, and splashed about

We laughed until

The neighbor's shout

And then one day, they had a thought

They had to go

To a different spot

So then they left, for something new

I'm not sure where

Or what to do

It went like this for quite some time

It was all their fault

Or even mine

I haven't changed, not through the years

Unlike them

They're not here

Either I didn't get them, or I did too much

I loved too strongly

Didn't love enough

Each friend was different, each one has left

I don't know why

Is there something I missed?

Sometimes when it rains or I hear a bird's song

My leaves will droop

My memories come

I wonder now, during these times

If they've forgotten

About me and my crimes

I pray that they did, so they don't feel this hurt

But still there's inside

The slightest of burns

If I had hurt the way they did

Would they have stayed?

And held my hand?

Sometimes I like the solitude

But now and then

I wish for you

I wonder if you'd see me now

What you'd think

Of my broken crown

Where and who -- who are you?

I think we'd say

If we, again, became two

I'm not the same, how 'bout you?

You have someone?

Or maybe a few?

Guess we wouldn't recognize

The things we've become

Since the sunrise

Plants have grown and plants have gone

But I've stayed here

Within this lawn

Did you spread your seeds so far?

Did your pollen

Touch the stars?

Or did you end up just like me?

Set off in search

Only to see

What you wanted was there before

But you left it behind

Have you kept score?

I miss you all, and that is that

If I saw you again

Then I'd eat my hat

But for now we can dream in our flower beds

And let the rain

Fall on our heads

Don't grow too fast, my fast-growing friend

Because once I did

And my leaves were bent

Maybe one day I'll meet you there

When our seeds are gone

Through the atmosphere

I'm sorry dear -- let go of my hand

It's now your turn

To lose your friend

You don't want to? You refuse?

I'm impressed

But not amused

I've never had someone stay this long

Thank you for never

Looking on

I don't know how to keep a friend

So you'll show me how

And hold my hand
