Brenan's ears twitched.
"What is that noise?", he whispered.
Azalea lifted her head to hear better. She could hear it too: a quiet, muffled sobbing noise coming from the next cell.
She crawled on her hands and knees towards the wall, and pressed the side of her head against it.
"What is it?", Brenan asked curiously.
"Brenan, it's not like I have some supernatural gift to sense these things, you know? I don't know!"
She tapped the wall gently with her knuckles.
"Hello? Are you okay?"
The sobbing noise stopped.
Then a voice filled Azalea's head.
'Hello, dear sister', it said quietly.
Azalea smiled.
"Hello, Starlin!", Azalea said aloud, greeting the dark little girl on the other side of the wall.
"Why are you crying?", she asked.
'I'm not crying', Starlin replied bluntly.
"Me and Brenan heard you, Starlin. What's wrong?"
Silence.
Then it came to Azalea.
She narrowed her eyes at the wall.
'Did he hurt you again?', Azalea asked inside her head, wanting to keep Starlin's personal life private.
Silence.
'Did. He. Hurt. You?', Azalea slowly asked again.
'Brotherly issues, my dear sister. Nothing more', Starlin finally replied.
Azalea growled.
'He's your brother, Starlin! Brothers don't hurt their little sisters! Marina would never hurt me, and Ferin should never hurt you!'
She paused, "I would never hurt you Starlin."
'You can't do anything, Azalea Korraine', Starlin said sadly.
"I'll see if I can visit you later, OK?", Azalea said aloud again, then crawled back next to Brenan.
"Starlin?", he asked, "Who is that?"
Azalea shook her head.
"A friend of mine", she said quietly, "She's having some family issues..."
Brenan raised an eyebrow.
"How do you know all of this? You barely said a word!"
"You know those.... experiments Haggar has?"
He nodded.
"She's one of them. She can read my thoughts."
Brenan nodded again, his gaze hardening as he stared at the wall with his chin on his knees.
Azalea sighed. She hated lying to him about herself.
About how she was one of the experiments too.
But Brenan hated anything with Galra blood flowing through it.
Even if it were a sobbing girl on the other side of the wall...
