Sitting in the bay window is supposed to help me feel better but instead all I can think about is Lucas's face as he walked away.
I just stare at the box in my lap hoping that I have enough courage to open it.
I barely notice the window slide open and a body plop down next to me.
"Riles?"
"Hmmm?" I respond distractedly.
Farkle sighs, "I thought we agreed to not open the box."
I look up at my best friend to see him staring at me with sad eyes.
"I know," I sigh looking back at the box, " It's just I never thought I'd see him again and I'm wondering if I should show him how bad he made me feel...."
"Riley," he says gently as he pulled his knees up, "We all know how hard this has been for you. Him leaving, coming back after all this time. As much as I want him to know the pain he's caused, I also don't want him to be in anymore pain."
I meet Farkle's eyes yet again, "He's in pain?"
"Oh come on Riley," Farkle smiled sadly, "Losing your best friend, leaving behind the only girl you've ever loved only to come back and she's moved on? Yeah. He's in pain."
I nodded feeling the tears threatening to fall, "But he left me, Farkle. We were all in pain after Cara died, but none of us ran away from the pain! We all dealt with it! And I did what I had to do to fix myself."
"We know that Riles," Farkle says putting his arm around me, "We know you and Adam needed each other to heal. Nobody's blaming you for putting yourself back together. And I don't even blame you for not telling us you were even together. I just think you and Lucas need to sit down and talk. It will help you both feel better and find some peace. Maybe even become friends again?"
"I don't think I can," I whisper, "because I know if I let him back in...."
"You'll fall in love with him all over again,". Farkle finished for me.
"Who said I ever stopped," I said wiping away my tears.
"But Adam..." He began, "How do you feel about him?"
"I love Adam," I say quickly, "I really do but you and I both know I'm not Cara. He'll always be in love with her."
"Just like you'll always be in love with Lucas," Farkle nods, "We're quite the group huh?"
I give him a watery smile, "Speak for yourself, Mr. Minkus! You've got your girl!"
"And I'm never letting her go," he smirked.
"Good," I smiled leaning into his arms resting my head on his shoulder.
"I don't know what to do," I whisper.
"Listen to your heart," he says chuckling.
"How cliche of you," I snort.
He sighs content, "You know whatever you do I'll be here for you."
I nod and shut my eyes.
"I love you, Riley Matthews."
"I love you to Farkle Minkus."
"Friends Forever?"
I laugh, "Forever. Maybe I should get us rings too?"
"Stop," he laughs, "Maya will kill us."
"Speaking of peaches," I say sitting up, "Where is she?"
Lucas
"Maya?"
"Ranger Rick, we need to talk," the blonde tells me as she pushes passed me wearing high heeled boots so she's taller and more intimidating.
"It's 7 am," I groan, "on a Sunday!"
"No it's 10 am actually," she smirks until she looks around my apartment, "Which you would know if you had any light in here."
"I prefer the darkness," I say grumbling heading back to my bed.
She of course follows.
"What do you need, Hart," I say plopping down on my bead, using my pillow to cover my face.
"What happened the other day wasn't acceptable," she tells me.
"You're telling me this now?" I say into my pillow, "You couldn't have waited till tomorrow?"
"It couldn't wait," she mumbled, "I'm tired of seeing her look broken, Lucas."
I toss my pillow aside and get up and go back to my kitchen to get some water.
"I know you're hurting too," she says following me.
"I've been hurting for awhile now. It's nothing new," I say gruffly.
"You see here, Huckleberry, I get it you needed to be alone for awhile and I also know why you didn't come back or why you couldn't but she doesn't. She thinks you abandoned her and you can't blame her for wanting to move on. And maybe she did for awhile. She did hide her relationship from us. But as much as I love Adam, he's not the one for her. They know it, we all know it. They just needed each other to get over the pain of losing Car and you leaving."
Her words ran through my head.
"So they don't really love each other?" I ask.
"No," she says calmly, "They do. It's just not in the way they think. They're using each other to fill a hole that can't be filled."
"I don't know what to to do Maya," I say sadly, "I think I pretty much tore her apart the last time we talked."
"You were angry," Maya smirked, "Texas Lucas made and appearance."
I nodded, "I lost control."
"To think," she smiled, "That used to turn me on."
"Yeah," I smirked, "I remember."
"But you and I both know that our relationship was...." She started
"A mistake?" I offered.
"Ouch," she said, "I was going to say complicated but you're right. It was never me. It's always been Riley Matthews."
"And it always will be," I say honestly.
"So stop being a stubborn ass and tell her that," Maya says pushing me softly before she began to walk towards the door.
"Hey Maya," I called.
She turned.
"Thanks."
"Anytime, Sundance," she smiles before walking out.
I grab my phone off the counter and see I have a message from an unknown number.
Maddog:
I think I made a mistake in judging you to quickly. Our friendship has always meant the world to me. I know we have a lot to work though but......lets start over?

I can't help but smile and I feel hope sprout in my chest. I quickly text back and head into the shower.
Riley
My phone pings back faster then I thought it would.
My heart is beating so fast I think I might faint.
Why does he do this to me?
It's just a text! I tell myself.
I open my messages and smile
Princess Dancing Sunshine:
I owe you an apology. Let's start over. Meet me in the place where it all began in an hour?

See you then.
And rush to get ready.
The butterflies that erupt in the pit of my stomach are a welcome feeling that I never thought I'd feel again.
