Chapter 31 – Heartbreak and Winter Plans
It was her last day of detention and Giselle couldn’t help but feel relieved as she walked out. Sir Frank was probably even growing tired of her. All she had been doing every day in detention was sit there and watch Sir Frank sit at his desk and grade students work. It was growing annoying and not to mention very boring.
For a second Giselle regretted walking out of her detention room. Jonah was standing there leaning against the wall waiting for her. She inhaled a bunch of air and held it in her lungs before approaching him.
Jonah gave her the slightest of all smiles while standing in front of her. He looked sick as if he had the flu and was struggling to stand there. Giselle figured it was because of Isaac but didn’t even bother to bring it up. She waited patiently for him to speak.
“How’ve you been?”
“Fine.” She said flatly.
“That’s good, I’m sorry that I’ve been kind of ghost on you.” He responded. “I figured you needed some space.”
“Cut the crap, Jonah.” She retorted anger in her voice. “Why’d you create a stupid poison to keep Isaac and me apart? Like what kind of self centered, selfish, controlling person are you?”
Jonah stood there shocked and staring. Her words cut threw him like a knife. They were cold and harsh. “He’s – He’s not right for you!”
“That’s not for you to decide!” She yelled back. “And you shouldn’t be getting involved!”
“I just wanted a fair shot to be with you.” He replied. “I wanted to tell you how I felt without worrying about him getting in the way.”
“Jonah, I don’t have feelings for you. Not in that way, we are just friends.” She said. “Well, at least we were, I honestly don’t know if I want anything to do with you anymore.”
His eyes leaked pain as he searched for the right words. “Giselle, don’t.”
“You did this to yourself.”
Jonah grabbed her hand and she yanked it out his grip. He didn’t know how to react or how to respond. He stared down at her thinking it was a dream, wanting to do anything to change her reaction, to change the way she felt. But her face revealed utter disgust and there was no way he could turn back.
Giselle shook her head out of disappointment and turned around to head to her dorm. She felt Jonah’s eyes burning into the back of her neck. She knew he was watching and she didn’t care. He wasn’t who she thought he was and at that moment she didn’t really want a friendship with him.
It was only four P.M and the campus seemed to be deserted. Something must have been going on that she didn’t know about. She walked into her dorm building to find Jasmine about to leave, walking in the direction she was heading but the opposite way. Jasmine grabbed her arm and grinned. “Meeting in the main hall.”
“For what?”
Jasmine shrugged. “I don’t know yet.”
Giselle followed thinking of the talk her and Jonah had wondering if it was too harsh. She quickly cancelled out the thoughts when she spotted Isaac at the entrance of the main hall. As usual he looked like a million bucks with a white button up, tie and slacks. She just didn’t know the occasion.
His eyes met hers, icy blue and radiant. She smiled at him and he nodded as if to say hello. Jasmine glanced at Giselle and giggled. “How cute.”
In moments they were walking into the main hall, Isaac behind them walking gracefully as usual. Giselle’s arm was laced through Jasmine’s like the good friends they were. Walking side by side helped Giselle keep her mind off the situation with Jonah and helped her recognize that she had other friends besides him.
The main hall was packed with students, most of them mingling and seated. Giselle and Jasmine took a seat up front. Isaac walked over to Professor Cornelius who was at the front of the room in front of a podium. He stood by his side and Giselle couldn’t help but wonder if the reason he was outside was to wait for her arrival.
The Professor gave a cocky grin to the audience with an eye brow arched. His smile was slick and sleek. His Smile faded and then he raised a hand before his eyes pierced at them and suddenly everyone’s chatter began to die. He waited patiently for silence. Once the entire hall was silent he grinned again, it was a grin more to himself. It was a grin that enjoyed the attention and longed for power.
“Welcome, student’s of gifted academy.” He said. “I hope your classes are going well.”
Everyone began to chant like they had no control over themselves. Students were completely excited and when Giselle turned to glance at Jasmine she saw that she was equally enthusiastic. It was like they were family and enjoyed being around each other, that alone made them excited and enthralled in each other’s presence.
The professor smirked before everyone’s chanting died. All eyes were again on him for him to continue. “I’ve seen many of you in your classes and I must say I am proud, you all have been growing and have become extremely bright.” He said. “But that’s not why have you been brought here today. The seasons are changing, its been growing colder by the minute and Christmas is on the way.”
Giselle felt a change in atmosphere; people were smiling to themselves at the mention. She couldn’t help but feel annoyed since she hated cold weather. She glanced at Isaac who looked content under his composed face standing beside the Professor with his arms crossed.
She heard the door to the entrance open and turned, there was Jonah walking in looking distant and upset. She didn’t care, she had other things to worry about and he wasn’t one of them. Without hesitation she turned in her seat and focused her attention back on the Professor.
“As some of you may know winter recess is the time where you are free to visit family and go back to Zeptoria. Some of you may choose to stay here but it is not recommended, as there is nothing to do on campus.” He went on. “Winter break is less than three weeks away, there will be transportation for you all to arrive at home to see your families and transportation for you to come back to the campus.”
Murmurs began to spread through the hall. People talking about what they were going to do once they got back home and who they were going to see. Professor Cornelius patiently waited but Giselle felt sick. Her stomach began to knot for she had no family, she had no one to visit or stay with. Watery eyes came to her face and she fought the urge to cry.
No mother. No father. No family. What else could she possibly do but sob? She felt herself rise and didn’t know where she was headed but hoped she wouldn’t be noticed. She didn’t want to hear it, any of it.
This meant she’d spend the holidays alone. No Christmas with a tree and with family and friends coming over. It was enough that the academy had an average day for thanksgiving with nothing but roast for dinner in the food court. She experienced that and it wasn’t the best holiday, she could feel her heart ache because of the lack of love and missing families. But Christmas was Giselle’s favorite holiday and she’d have to spend it alone, with nobody by her side.
In seconds she was out of the hall and standing outside tears welling up her eyes ready to spill. Finally they spilled over and she sat on the steps to the main hall bringing her knees to her chest and her hands to her face. She cried like she hadn’t cried in a while because she felt like she had nobody, she felt more alone than ever.
When she felt a hand on her shoulder she got up instantly turning around rapidly and wiping her face. Her green eyes met Isaac’s blue ones and they read nothing but understanding for Isaac had no family either except for his drunk of a father. He grabbed her hand and gazed at her.
“How’d you know I walked out?”
“I saw you rise, it wasn’t hard to notice when everyone else is seated and happy about winter recess except you.”
She avoided his stare. “I’m sorry, maybe I should go back.”
“You don’t have to.” He said softly. “If it makes you feel uncomfortable.”
She glanced up at him, the knot in her stomach disappearing and a warmth passing through her chest. “Thank you.”
“What for?”
“For being here, for not being a jerk when the time is right.”
His eye brow arched playfully. “Oh, so I know when to be a jerk, do tell.”
She giggled. “Shut up.”
Giselle felt her stomach growl. She made a line of annoyance with her mouth remembering she hadn’t eaten lunch that day. Isaac smirked down at her, which was one of the only times she saw some emotion come off his face. She guessed he heard the growl.
“We can head to the food court and let the professor finish his announcements.”
“But wouldn’t he notice that we were gone?”
“Of course but I wouldn’t let you starve to death now would I, Giselle?”
Giselle smiled and allowed him to lead the way. It was odd how empty the campus was since everyone was in the main hall talking about winter recess. She didn’t care about getting off school. In the human world this was a time of excitement as it was here at gifted academy. Giselle felt nothing but numbness.
The campus was eerily quiet. All Giselle could hear was their footsteps and several birds chirping in the trees. Giselle glanced at Isaac who looked focused on getting to his destination. He seemed to be the type of person to never get caught off guard.
The trees were bare and winter was practically here. All Giselle wanted was for it to pass so the lonely holiday season would be over and so that the heat could come back like she enjoyed. She couldn’t help but think there were so many more ways to have fun during the summer. The weather was delightful, there were things like ice pops and ice cream, plus the pool was exhilarating. All winter reminded her of was teeth chattering and quilts.
The food court was deserted except for the food that was lying out in its usual stations. Giselle settled for two tacos and a can of soda. She and Isaac sat at a table and he stood there silently only there to keep her company, not because he was hungry.
“So, what was it that made you so highly uncomfortable?” He questioned.
Giselle wiped her mouth with a napkin, swallowing down a large piece of taco. “Um, well I don’t have anyone for starters; the whole winter recess blows… I’ll probably just stay here.”
Isaac shook his head no. “That isn’t too safe; the only people that might be here are several teachers, a couple dimwitted teens and the guards at the gate.”
“Sounds peachy.”
“No, it really does not.”
“Nothing else I can do.” She said flatly. “I don’t have a choice and I don’t want to bother Jasmine and stay with her and the Professor.”
“Actually, you can stay with me… In the royal hall at the castle, the professor is impeccably close to Queen Isadora and has made arrangements for me to stay there since I refuse to step foot in my old house, my father and I don’t particularly get along.”
“Me? In the castle of the queen?” Giselle managed to laugh. “This is a joke right?”
“Not at all.” He said. “If I were you I’d agree, the queen has plenty of servants who will do anything you grant them to if you do stay and the Castle is a beautiful sight compared to staying anywhere else.”
“I don’t know.”
“Well, I’ll ask the professor.” He responded. “It’s better than staying here.”
“How can you even stay with the queen? Doesn’t she intimidate you?”
“Not at all, she’s friendly and open minded with most.” He said. “And she’d probably be even nicer to you.”
“Why?”
“Because, your Nicolas Riley’s daughter Giselle.” He said. “Have you ever took the time to sit back and take that weight on your shoulders? He’s a legend in Zeptoria.”
“Yeah yeah, a legend I’ve never met.”
“Sometimes I wish I never met my father.” Isaac replied. “Don’t be so hard on him, it was for the best.”
Giselle remained silent and picked at the remains of her tacos.
“I spoke to the professor about what happened with Jonah, he let me off with a warning and said he couldn’t punish Jonah without punishing me because I was vengeful and acted after him. What I did seemed like punishment enough.”
“Yeah I saw him today, he looked kind of sick.”
“Yes, sick in the head. Absurd for thinking he’d get away with what he did.”
“Something has to be up with him, I don’t know what he was thinking.”
“He wasn’t thinking.”
Giselle shrugged while lifting her can of soda and taking a sip. Isaac stood there watching her, his eyes beautiful and blue like always and his face intense, composed and fierce like he could take on the world.
There was silence for a moment. Giselle didn’t mind. She thought about her father and how there was a chance she’d never meet him. She sat there twirling her fingers around the top of the can wondering if her father ever thought about her this much.
“Hey, Isaac, do you think I’ll ever get a chance to meet him?” She asked, her voice low. “Do you think he’ll ever show up?”
“One day he will.” Isaac said. “One day,”
