Chapter 46

I stared at the fireplace inside Wayne's office and warmed my hands while he scurried through papers behind me. "Did you keep track on her?" I asked him while looking over my shoulders.

He seemed confused, "I don't know. I'm not sure but I did have one of my men follow her. Though, I didn't keep track of the updates as I was dealing with problems of my own." He looked behind and met with my gaze while holding a bundle of papers. "The last time I had seen your mother was at the same time and she had poisoned me then."

Problems.

I understood what he had meant by that. After my mother had given him the poison, he began changing and with that came awfully terrible things. He was not the monster that we had encountered in the forest as he had learned to control himself. I didn't know how he did it but I knew it was difficult and it took plenty of his time.

I lowered my eyes to the papers in his hold before lifting myself off the ground and walking over to him. "What's this?" I placed a hand over the table and another one over my hip.

"These were the updates I had gotten. I think so." He spread the papers over the carved wooden desk and I took a quick glance at it.

Grabbing one of the papers, I lifted it up and read it closer. It mentioned a location, a time and what my mother had been doing.

19:09

Starkville

Driving a 2012 Honda over 13th street, stopped by the building—name unknown—was there for three hours before she had left the town.

I chewed on my lower lip while reading the papers. Wayne had sent someone to keep a track on my mother and he had reported everything. It wasn't of everyday but random days of the month.

She had skipped through a couple of towns and even travelled to a few other cities where she had only stayed for a couple of weeks before leaving and escaping to another place. Her movements were shady to say the least and nothing could be figured out with the locations.

"So," I cleared my throat and placed a paper over the table. "We don't know where she was when you banished her but I can tell she was somewhere secluded, with Uncle Hawk, forming the poison that she had given you. Once it was completed, she returned her, just around the same time I left and she had given the poison to you." I continued before taking a long, deep breath. "She had travelled through several packs after she left from here so we don't know which pack or Alpha had she sold the poison to and we cannot figure it out with this information."

Wayne listened before nodding his head, "I agree. It's fucking useless to even read this shit." He groaned and turned around to face the window. His right hand rested over his forehead as tension spread over his body.

"What's wrong?" I asked him in a low whisper, not knowing the exact reason behind his grumpiness.

We had only been inside the office for less than an hour and that wasn't enough time to make someone cranky.

"Your mother had given the poison to someone, someone that could probably use it on innocent people, Clara!" He snapped.

"Yes, and we are figuring out a way to find who."

"But that could take a long time and we don't have time. What if there are people already changing or poisoned? Who knows the number? And there is no way to control it!" He continued, making a few points that I had understood.

We weren't truly sure about anything, especially after the encounter of that man in the woods.

No one was safe.

And the worst part of this all was that it was my own mother's fault and this all could end terribly.

Wayne grabbed the beige office chair and the wheels rolled before he sat down on it. He rose his head and looked at me. Part of his tension seemed to drift away almost immediately.

"You can control it, can't you?" I cocked a brow at him, unsure of whether he could or not.

I hadn't seen him at his wildest form. I had only heard about it, from his mouth and Nora's but that was all. I feared seeing him like that.

"I can." His shoulders were upright when he responded with assurance.

"Are you sure?"

"Of course, I can!" He exclaimed and I found a bit of frustration at the back of his voice.

"When was the last time you drank someone's blood?" I didn't stop. I wanted to know if he actually could control himself or whether he was simply lying to me.

"It was a long time ago, Clara. Why are you asking me these questions? Do you think I'm going to go wild on you and rip your throat apart while you're sleeping comfortably?" It was a little too precise.

"Will you?"

His nostrils flared before he gave me a little nod, "I have the urge to do so but that's the thing, I can control my urges."

My eyes glanced over the table and I found a small scissor by the corner, just where all the pens had been stored. I walked over to the corner and stood near it.

"So if by any chance, I'm bleeding, you'll be able to control it?" I asked him once more.

"Yes." He offered me a quick, stiff smile which clearly meant something else.

I exhaled out a breath before grabbing the scissor from between the pens and parting the sharp ends open. He stared at me in disbelief as I bought the tip of the scissor to my left palm.

Just before pressing the sharp end against my palm, I rose my head and glanced at him once last time. He didn't utter anything as I made a small cut over my skin. It ached for a moment only as the skin over my palm was tough enough to bear a cut. But the blood seeped out quickly and spread over my palm.

The scent of it rose in the air and the next time I saw Wayne's face, it was slightly different, unhinged.

I placed the scissor back over the table and asked him, "Are you still in control?"

"Completely." He replied, quickly before he even had a moment to think.

"So it doesn't affect you?"

"It does. I can control it."

I walked closer to him and my gaze ran over his hands that were clenched tight around the arms of the leather chair. The veins from the back of his hand popped and throbbed as he held himself together.

The air grew strained between us and I no longer knew what I had been feeling about this all.

"Do you want my blood?" I asked, offering him.

"Clara..." He trailed off, taking in a deep breath. His heart raced and I heard it galloping from a distance. I could see his body tight and the tension grow within him.

"Do you?" I released the breath I had been holding in.

"Of course." He replied, softly before pressing his eyes shut for a long moment.

With hesitance, I came near to him. My knees touched his as he sat while I stood over him, between his legs. His head rose and the control became stronger. Part of me felt as if I was doing something terribly wrong but another part of me agreed with my action and what had been running in my head.

I followed his eyes as they fell upon my hand and the blood running through from the cut. It was small but there was enough blood for him to feel the hunger. His eyes were dark, as dark as I had seen them. They weren't red nor filled with violence, just need.

"You can have it." I whispered as I moved my hand closer to him.

He didn't move until a minute later and when he did, he wrapped his hand around my wrist and bought it just an inch away from his mouth.

My heart thundered in my chest.

This wasn't a test.

Not anymore.

I wanted him to have it. I couldn't see the pain and the need in his eyes for another second. It had to do something with the mate bond or maybe it had to do with the love I had for him. The desire to give everything he wanted, even if it was my own blood.
