- Nathan -

- Why the big smile? – Nadia's voice says from behind. I turn around to see a smug on her face. Mason is beside her as well.

- How did you know I was smiling from behind? – I ask.

- Oh, please. You are practically skipping through the halls like little red Riding Hood. – she jokes. I chuckle.

- Really? – I say, surprised and a bit embarrassed.

- Yeah. – they say in unison. I chuckle as a smile paints my face.

- So, I assume it went well with your parents. – Mason comments.

- Yeah. They weren't so sure at first, but they understood eventually. – I explain briefly, trying to contain my excitement.

I turn to my locker to grab my history textbook and notebook. Not a lot of people are in the hall since classes soon start. Just a few people are around, and they look concentrated on their stuff. I doubt they'll even pay attention to us.

- Then it's settled. You two are official? – my beta asks, excited.

- Well, not yet. We still have to tell his pack before anything, which we are planning to do soon, but it shouldn't be a problem. – I say confidently, Mason nods understanding perfectly.

- How are you so sure? – Nadia asks.

- Well, rogues are more umm... traditional. – I tell her.

- What do you mean? – she inquires. I sigh, thinking about how to explain it.

- Rogues are more religious, you could say. – Mason starts.

- Oh, right. I was meaning to ask about that. Do you believe in God or how does it work? – her tone rises with curiosity.

- To be brief, we are polytheistic, we believe in many gods, but we mostly worship the Moon Goddess. Because, you know, the whole wolf stuff. – I say.

- Ohhhhh, interesting. – her eyebrows rise. – So, why aren't you religious? – she asks.

- We are, we worship the Moon Goddess just like them, but because our pack settled, the customs changed over time to blend better with humans. Rogues, on the other hand, still practice old traditions. – Mason adds.

- Isn't that a bad thing? After all, you two are guys, will they accept your relationship? – she inquires a little worried.

- Rogues don't care, it's our pack that has problems with gay relationships. – I explain.

- Really? Why? – she asks surprised.

- Humans have always had a problem with homosexuality. Your kind has started to accept them just recently. Since we need to blend in with humans, our pack started to adopt some of your customs. Many of us have that way of thinking because of our ancestors. But rogues don't share these thoughts. Gay, straight, bi... they don't care, it's all-natural for them. – Mason fills in smartly.

- Wow. – she exclaims amazed. - So, they are kind of old-modern fashion. – she suggests, making us chuckle.

- It's one way to say it. – Mason laughs.

- Yeah, and from what Caleb has told me, his pack really respects mates. Like, dead serious, mates are the most important thing for them. I doubt they'll disapprove. – I say, feeling so relieved.

- Oh my God, I'm so happy for you. – she says with a higher thrilled pitch, giving me a hug which a quickly accepted.

- Thanks. –

I chuckle lightly in the embrace. I'm so excited that I have a smile from ear to ear. Everything feels so surreal, like when you've been wishing for something for so long, and suddenly, it comes true. Well, that's exactly how I feel. I've dreamed of this countless times; now, it's all real. My heart is pounding so fast it might burst out. We will make our relationship official in front of my pack any time now, and we won't have to hide anymore. I sigh deeply in delight from just thinking about it. However, the school bell rang loudly, ruining my chain of thoughts.

- Shit. – Nadia says lowly, breaking the embrace. - We are late. I have to go, but I'll see you guys later, okay? – she calls as she walks away in a hurry.

We nod and I laugh to myself. I close the locker and lock it before starting to walk. The room is nearby, so it's okay.

- Seriously, man. I'm happy for you. – Mason congratulates me, padding my back.

- Thanks. Who would've thought that the rogues would change our lives right? – I comment.

- Yeah. – he chuckles happily. – If it weren't for them, I would've never met Violet. – he says.

- And I would still be dating Nadia. –

- You were miserable. – he jokes.

- Yeah. – I admit and we laugh loudly.

The door is wide open. Fortunately for us, Mr. Harrison hasn't arrived yet, so we walk inside quickly before he does. My eyes instantly direct to Caleb's spot, but no one's there. I search around the room quickly, but nothing. Maya and Luke are missing as well. The joy I was feeling instantly turns into worry. What the... did something happen? I turn to Mason, but Mr. Harrison's voice fills the room before I had the chance to say anything.

- I'm sorry for being late for class. Let's start. Mason, Nathan could you please sit down guys? – he calls us, rushing to his desk to leave his stuff.

I nod and we walk to our usual places. This is weird. Caleb never misses school, and Maya and Luke aren't here either. Something must've happened. I pull out my phone from my pocket and type.

Good morning sleepy head. (07:13) – Me

Are you guys running late? (07:13) – Me

I don't want to be too paranoid about this. Maybe one of them overslept and they are running late. Yeah, that's it, don't worry Nathan, they are okay. I'm sure it's just a misunderstanding.

- Oh, looks like we are missing people. Does anyone know where they are? – the teacher asks.

- Why would we know? They are rogues. – someone says mockingly, making some members laugh. It bothers me a little, but I'll let it slide.

- Come on guys, don't be rude. – Mr. Harrison scolds, silencing the room. – I guess, we'll have to start without them. – he adds.

- Where are they? – Mason whispers.

- I don't know. – I respond just as lowly.

Mr. Harrison continued with today's lesson. And for the love of the Goddess, I swear I couldn't care less. My worry grew with every second that passed. I look at my phone's screen every five minutes to check if Caleb had responded, but nothing. I'm trying not to overthink this, but it's easier said than done. I mean, what could've happened? He left pretty late yesterday, he probably just went to sleep late and didn't hear his alarm. Yeah, that is totally possible. He would've called or texted me if something were wrong. But why isn't he answering then? I look at the screen again to check again, but the same luck, nothing.

Good morning sleepy head (07:13) – Me

Are you guys running late? (07:13) – Me

Is everything all right? I'm starting to get worried (07:31) – Me

Callie? (07:35) – Me

Okay, you got me. I won't call you that, please answer (07:35) – Me

Seriously, Cal. It's not funny. Just let me know if you're okay (07:38) – Me

??? (07:39) – Me

Okay, no. Something is definitively wrong. I'm starting to get very anxious. This is not normal. He never takes long to respond; he should have answered by now. I continue typing worriedly when Mr. Harrison calls me angrily.

- Mr. Bryce. Do you have something better to do? – he says, walking up to my chair.

- I'm sorry. I'll put it away, it won't happen again. – I respond immediately, putting it back in my pocket.

- You know the rules. Hand it over. – he says, with an open hand.

- But... – I try reasoning, but he moves his fingers, gesturing me to hand over the device. I huff, grabbing my phone and placing it in his hand.

- You can get it back at the end of the day. – he says, walking away with it.

Fuck! I should've said it was my parents or something like that. Maybe he wouldn't have taken it away. This just makes me even more nervous and anxious. I bring my bracelet to my nose. It smells like Caleb. I need to concentrate a lot to catch it because the scent is weak, it's fading away. I really regret not asking him to scent-mark it yesterday. At least it would bring me some comfort now, small, but it's better than nothing. I thought we wouldn't need it anymore since we'd be living together soon. But no... I'm stupid. Instead, I'm here worrying all alone.

After a while, the school bell rang again. Students start to pack and leave. I pack my stuff and grab my backpack quickly, walking up to Mr. Harrison's desk. His face turns to me, expectantly.

- I'm sorry for texting during class. Can I have my phone back? – I ask, trying to sound as nice as possible.

- You know the rules, Nathan. No phones during classes. – he says casually, sitting down.

- I know, it won't happen again. Please. – I insist. I just want to snatch it away.

- I'll tell you something. I'll give your phone back if you can tell me what today's lesson was. – he bets confidently.

I open my mouth to speak immediately when I realize I have no idea what to say. Shit! I should've paid a little more attention. Okay, Nathan, you can do this. Just try and remember something... anything. Wait. I smile internally, finding a loophole.

- The French Revolution was a watershed event in world history that began in 1789 and ended in the late 1790s with the ascent of Napoleon Bonaparte. During this period, French citizens radically altered their political landscape, uprooting centuries-old institutions such as the monarchy and the feudal system. – I speak confidently, trying to smile not so smugly.

- You read what's on the blackboard. – he accuses.

- You never said I couldn't. – I point out cunningly.

Okay, even I must admit that's cheating, but I can't help and smug myself. Besides, it's not like I read word by word. He only wrote the dates along with the words monarchy, feudal system, and some other stuff. I put together the rest. If you ask me, it still counts. Mr. Harrison, however, doesn't seem very pleased. He sighs but hands me the device.

- Don't let it happen again. – he says, warningly.

- It won't. – I nod, grabbing my phone. - Thank you. – I immediately check the screen, desperate to see if Caleb had responded.

- If it's a family emergency, you can go home. I can tell the school something came up. – he suggests nicely.

- No, it's okay. It's probably nothing. – I say, smiling reassuringly. At least I hope it's nothing, I tell myself.

I walk outside, walking over to my locker to change books for my next subject. Mason does the same, our lockers are in front of each other. Screw this, I decide to call him. I press on his contact and bring the device next to my ear. It didn't even ring, straight to voicemail. I try calling a second time, but the same. Dammit. I slam my locker hard and curse under my breath.

- Still nothing? – he asks concerned, walking toward me.

- No. – I respond sharply.

Caleb, I'm serious. Answer the phone, I'm panicking here (08:08) – Me

- Maybe his battery died. – Mason says as we walk into the class.

Again, they are not here. My mind is running wild. It's not just anxiety anymore, the suspense is dreading now. I'm panicking now. Maybe they were attacked. Maybe he got injured and that's why he's not answering his phone. I need to get to him. I'm about to walk out the door when the teacher walked in, closing the door behind her.

- Good morning, everyone. Did everyone do the homework? We're going to start in a minute. – Mrs. James greets everyone nicely. Fuck! I'm stuck here for another hour.

- Have you tried calling the twins? Maybe they know something. – Mason says.

I look at him amazed. My Goddess, he's so smart, I love him so much. I pull out my phone and text them when someone knocks on the door. Mrs. James walks up to the door and opens it, but I can't see who it is.

- Sorry for being late. Can we come in? – I hear Maya's voice outside. The teacher looks at the clock.

- You're just in time, come in. – she moves aside.

- Thanks. – Maya responds.

Oh, thank the Goddess, they are here. I can feel my heart relax a little in my chest, falling into a steadier rhythm. Maya is the first to enter. She walks in fast like in a hurry; her hair is loose and looks a little messy. Luke follows next, he walks in with a very stern look, even more than usual. I wait hopeful for Caleb to appear, but it never happens. Mrs. James closed the door. My heart sank in place, panic invading my every thought. My eyes move to Maya, she is sitting down with her face looking down. Luke is the same, his stern face gives it away. I may not be able to smell anything coming from them, but I don't need to. Something is troubling them. This just worries me further.

- Maya, Luke... pssst. – I whisper trying to call their attention. I know they can hear me, but they don't even glance at me. So, I try texting her.

Hey Maya, it's me, Nathan. Is everything okay? (08:10) – Me

I hear her phone buzz and see her pull it out, reading the message. She completely ignores it and puts the device away. Then she tilts her head backward slightly, fixing her hair, and crosses her arms, leaning back in the chair.

- Okay, something's definitively off. – Mason comments, having seen everything I just did.

- Yeah. – I respond worriedly.

Once again, I'm dreading my existence with no response from Caleb. Nathan, focus; take a deep breath and think clearly. What do I know? They don't look hurt or injured, which means that they haven't been raided, and he must be alive; otherwise, the twins wouldn't be here. I take a deep breath, that's reassuring. What else? Mmmmmmm.... Caleb is Beta in Command. Betas take care of the pack, which means that maybe Alpha Alaric needed him for something. Yeah, it could be that. He's busy with pack things and he can't answer his phone because he left it at home or something. Besides, if he were in danger, I would feel something through the mate bond... right? Then again, why are Maya and Luke so troubled? I know they don't get along with a lot of people here, but it's not just that. Shit, there goes that theory.

The rest of the class went by in a flash. I did manage to pay some attention, but my mind was mostly focused on possible scenarios as to why Caleb isn't here. No matter how much I think about a possible explanation, I always find something to discredit it and I'm back to step 1. The bell rang, signaling the end of the class. Everyone started putting their things away. I shoved my notebook inside my backpack and stood up quickly. I look in the twin's direction, but they are already gone. What the fuck, where did they go?

- Hey, did you see the twins leave? – I turn to Mason. He looks behind me to their seats.

- There were sitting there 5 seconds ago. – he comments.

- Yeah. –

- Maybe they went to their lockers. – he suggests. I nod.

It was the same with the remaining classes. Maya and Luke would show up just before the class started and go directly to their places. When the bell rings, they are the first out. I tried chasing after them, but, as soon as I walked out the door, they were gone. The fact that they can hide their scent makes it impossible to follow them. They didn't even show up during lunch break. I ate my food quickly and searched for them everywhere but to no success. These guys can be very slippery. Chemistry period just finished, so instead of chasing after them in vain, I decided to wait for them outside school.

My patience is running thin as everyone comes outside, but I can't spot them. Did they leave before I got here? No, impossible. I was the first to come out. I asked the teacher for permission to go to the bathroom and never returned. My nerves and anxiety grow the longer I wait. I'm about to lose it and go inside when I spot Maya's blond hair. They walk outside carelessly.

- Maya, Luke! – I call loudly, jogging in their direction.

They turn in my direction and glance at each other. Then, they simply turn right and start walking away like nothing. I run and catch up with them in no time since they are walking. They don't stop walking, they look determined to leave

- Hey, guys. Aren't you going to go to your extracurricular? – I ask walking next to them.

- No. – Maya answers coldly.

- Did I do something? Why are you guys avoiding me? – I question.

- We're not, we just... – Maya begins talking.

- Maya. – her brother interrupts abruptly and stares at her. It's enough to shut her up. That worries me deeply.

- Where's Caleb? Is he all right? – I ask, concerned.

- He's fine, he... –

- Maya! We can't. – Luke interrupts once again, more serious this time.

- But... – she argues.

- We have orders, Maya. We can't do this. – he insists, sounding a little upset.

- He has the right to know. – she states firmly.

- I'm not going to disobey a direct order. – Luke says firmly.

- Maybe you won't, but I will. – she says confidently.

- You're on your own then. – her brother says and leaves.

- What's going on? – I ask.

- Let's go somewhere more private. – she tells me.

We head to a more discreet area, filled with trees away from the multitude. Maya sighs deeply. Shit, this is serious if they have orders not to talk about it. I'm way past worry now, I'm desperate. I need to know if he's okay.

- Is Caleb hurt? – I question, feeling my heart pressured.

- He's okay, he's not hurt, don't worry. – she affirms nicely.

- Then why won't Luke talk to me? – I ask.

- Our Delta ordered us not to speak with anyone and come home as quickly as possible. Luke just got promoted to future Gamma, he won't risk compromising his new position. – she explains briefly.

- Not to speak about what? I don't understand. – I question.

- Caleb won't become the future Beta in Command. Instead, Alaric wants him to marry Nymeria and become Alpha. – she says.

- What? – I exclaim.

The words come out of my mouth without thinking. The news hit me hard. I feel like my stomach is being crushed. I start hyperventilating and the place is moving in circles. Control yourself, Nathan! Now's not the time to lose it.

- Why would- why would he do that? – I stutter, struggling to speak.

- Because Nymeria asked him to, she wants to marry him. – she answers. – Caleb refused, though. – she adds quickly.

- He did? –

- Yeah, I was there. He says he couldn't marry Nymeria because he is already mated to another, to you. – she explains casually. My heart relaxes a little.

- I don't understand, why are you so cool about this? – I ask.

- I already knew. – she cuts me off. – Nadia. – she adds. Of course, it had to be her. - You could've told me you wanted to fuck my ex, you know? – she says seriously. - Don't worry, I'm on your team. – she winks at me with a smug on her face, making me chuckle lightly.

- Thanks. – I laugh a bit. – But why did Caleb not come? – I ask. She takes a deep breath.

- Listen... - she pauses for a second. – They are forcing him to marry. –

- What? –

- All I know, is that Alaric held a pack meeting to announce Caleb as the future Male Alpha. Nathan... I don't think he wants to do it, he wants to come and be with you. – she says.

- They can't force him to do that. It's not right. – I complain upset.

- That's not the worst part. – Maya adds.

- How the fuck can it be worst? – I exclaim.

- Has he told you about Dyrus? – she asks concerned.

- No, he was always very private about his pack and stuff like that. – I respond honestly. - Why? –

- It doesn't matter. The point is, he's always been jealous of Caleb and when Alaric announced their engagement, he didn't approve. He challenged Caleb to a fight. – she says agitated.

- No way... –

- He's always been under Caleb's shadow. He was present when Caleb rejected Alaric's offer. I guess... he couldn't take it anymore. I knew this would happen; I warned Caleb about it. – she says stressfully.

- Okay, when will the challenge take place? Maybe I can talk with my parents and figure something out. – I say.

- No, it won't work. They are going to fight today, at sunset. –

- Fuck! – I yell, bringing my hands to the back of my head.

That's not enough time for my parent to do something. If Caleb dies, I will never forgive myself. Think, Nathan, think! Come on, come on.

- Can you sneak me in? – I say, unease.

- What? – she asks, confused.

- I need you to sneak me in. I need to speak with Caleb. – I speak firmly.

- And say what?! –

- I'll convince him to run away with me before the fight. Your pack will be distracted, we can sneak in unnoticed. – I say.

- Even if it works, he has a group of elites guarding him before the challenge. They won't allow him to escape. The whole pack will be present, you two can't speak alone. – the blond points out.

- I'll find a way to reach him. – I say dismissively.

- It's too risky Nathan. – she shakes her head.

- Maya, please. This is my mate we are talking about. – I plead.

- Some wolves already think Caleb is a traitor for being mated to a domestic. They'll hate me if they find out I helped you sneak in. – she explains worriedly.

- Please Maya... - I almost fall to my knees and beg. - Caleb knows about you and Jake. –

- What are you talking about? – she asks, confused and stern.

- It's true, isn't it? You two are mates. – I ask sternly. Maya's face turns pale. - Caleb suspected that you are mated to Jake. – I explain.

- If he knew, then why didn't he say? – she asks dazzled.

- For the same reason you didn't ask him. He wanted you to come out when you were ready. – I continue and she exhales lowly. – Maya... he told me he supports you no matter what and will help you fight for your mate. – I say. Maya's eyes break and begin to water.

- Why? – she asks, dumbfounded.

- Because he cares for you... - I tell her. – And because he knows how it feels to have a mate. Caleb would protect you and anyone he loves no matter what, even if it is against your pack. - A tear falls down her cheek. – Maya... he is my mate. I want to protect him too. I need to make sure he's okay. Please, help me. – I plead again.

Maya takes a minute to assimilate the news. She wipes the tears off her cheek and breathes deeply to control herself.

- Okay. – she agrees, nodding.

- Really? Yes! – I say a bit relieved.

- Caleb's fight is going to take place around 20:00. There's a patrol shift, so maybe we can get you through. I still need to work on some details, but it'll work. Meet me at the crossroad at 19:30. – she says, thoughtfully.

- What, 19:30? That's not a lot of time and we still need to figure out a way to get to Caleb. – I say.

- Even if it were before, elites will still be guarding every square inch outside his house. Besides, it would be more difficult to walk around unnoticed. No. It's better after 19:30, everyone will be heading to the arena, and we might find a way to get you inside. – Maya states smartly.

- Okay, that makes sense. – I say. – 19:30, then. –

- Don't be late. – she warns me.

- I won't. – I assure her. There's no way I'm not going to be there.

- I need to leave. I have to catch up with Luke before he arrives home. – she tells me.

- Of course. – I nod.

- Don't be stupid trying to play the hero. Tell your parents, they might be able to help. – she says and runs off.

- Finally found you, man. I've been looking everywhere for you. – Mason's voice sounds worried. – Looks like you got to speak with Maya. What did she say? – he asks, handing me my backpack.

- It's bad. – I say.

I explain everything Maya said. His face also turns a little pale at the magnitude of the problem. I also mentioned the plan with Maya. He offered to accompany me to the Lazarus pack, but I rejected it. It's too risky for both of us to infiltrate their territory. They would notice. Maybe Maya's right. I know that my parents won't be able to help with so little time. They'll probably forbid me to go, but I can't just disappear. This is a delicate subject and it's better if they know where I am. I'll just need to risk it, explain the situation to them, and pray they have my back.

- Let me come with you. – Mason insists again.

- Thanks man, but it would only complicate things. – I reject. – I'll be okay, I can take care of myself, and Caleb won't let anyone hurt me. –

- What if they get to you first and he never sees you? I can help. – my beta can be stubborn sometimes.

- I need you to trust me, Mason. Please. – I say. He huffs and nods reluctantly.

- What about your parents? –

- I'm going to tell them. I just hope they support me and not lock me in my room to make sure I don't leave. – I answer.

- Shit. This must be serious if you're not doing it behind their back. –

----------------------------------------------------

- No, absolutely not. Have you gone mad? This is crazy, it's too dangerous. – my mother says adamantly.

I sigh deeply, frustrated. I've been trying to convince them for hours, but they just won't budge. It's like arguing against the wall. I explained everything a thousand times, how important he is to me, but they still refuse to let me go. My dad takes a sip of his water, letting the glass on top of the table. We have been standing beside the kitchen table for a while, my legs are starting to get tired.

- Mom, I can't just sit here and do nothing! – I exclaim.

- Are you even listening to yourself? You want to infiltrate a rogue pack. – she yells hysterically.

- Your mother is right, Nate. It's very dangerous to go to their lands unannounced. – my father points out.

- I know that and I still want to do it. This is my mate we are talking about. – I sigh frustrated.

- We know who he is Nathan. And my answer is still no, it's too dangerous. – she's adamant.

- Their attention will be focused on the fight; they won't even notice me. – I speak confidently, trying to convince them.

- But what if they do? You'd be held captive. No, no way in hell. – she says strongly.

- You can't think that way, Mom. It's not fair. – I argue.

- How else am I supposed to think? You are my son; I'll always look out for you. –

- Then do it now. – I cry out, tears forming in my eyes.

- Son, let me handle this. I'll ask for a meeting with Alaric as soon as possible and work this out. – my dad says, acting calm and confident.

- What if Caleb dies? With him gone, a part of me dies. I... I don't think I'll be able to live without him. – I say firmly, tears forming in my eyes.

- Nathan... – she says, putting her hand lovingly on my cheek. I push it away.

- I'm serious. I love him. I- I just want to be with him. – I'm definitively crying now. – I know I'm asking for a lot, and I know it's dangerous, but.... I could've gone without telling you. That would've been irresponsible and reckless. You guys have been trying to teach me to be a smarter Alpha, and I still have a lot to learn but... - I take a deep breath and wipe my tears. - ... but Caleb has taught me a lot too. I'm a better Alpha because of him. Please! I'm asking this as your son and member of the pack. I need to do this. It will mean a lot if you support me. – I say, looking at the floor.

The room falls silent. The only sound in the room is my exasperating breathing. I shut my eyes strongly, praying to the Moon Goddess to hear my calls and help me. Please, help me out right now.

- Okay. – my father says. My eyes immediately look up to see him.

- Really? – I ask in disbelief. They exchange a look like they are talking telepathically.

- Yeah. – my mom answers. – But you have to promise us that you'll be extra careful. – she says her condition.

- Of course, I promise. – I immediately say.

- I'm serious, son. If anything happens, I mean anything at all, you need to put yourself first and get out of there. We'll try to be near enough not to compromise anything. Just howl and we'll be there in no time. – my dad says firmly. I nod. – At what time are you supposed to be there? – he asks.

- 19:30. – I answer. He looks at the watch on his left wrist.

- Well, you should get going. It's 19:17. – he says. A smile grows on my face. I rush up to them and hug them tightly.

- Thank you. – I say.

- Just go already, before I change my mind. – my mom says with tears in her eyes.

I run outside the house and to the forest. The crossroad isn't that far away, but I still want to be there early just in case. The sooner Maya gets there, the sooner I'll get to see Caleb. I'll take any second she can get me. I arrive at the location where she said to meet. I circle in place looking around, trying to sense anything when I hear grass moving behind me. I turn and see Maya walking in my direction. She's holding a black hoodie.

- You're early. – she notes.

- This is my mate we are talking about. – I respond.

- Good. Take your shoes off and put this on. – she throws me the hoodie. I put it on immediately. I don't like the smell but it's not that bad either. It's just not Caleb's. – If you're barefooted you'll call less attention. – she points out. I look down at her feet and notice she's barefoot. Right, Caleb told me about this.

- What about the sweatshirt? – I ask, getting my shoes off.

- It's Luke's. – she responds. Okay, that explains the smell. - You are about his height. Put the hoodie on so they'll think you are him. –

- The patrol? –

- I know exactly where they are. We can get passed them, but it needs to be fast. – she says firmly. Wow, she really thought about this.

- Thanks again, Maya. It means a lot. – I say gratefully.

- He's my best friend. He would do it for me. – she responds. We look into each other eyes meaningfully. A small silence happens, but Maya soon snaps out. – Okay, from now on, try not to speak and stay close to me. Keep your head forward and don't look anyone in the eye. Got it? –

- Yeah. Shut up, stay close, and don't get distracted. Got it. – I say confidently.

- Good. Let's go. –

We start running toward the Lazarus pack territory. The closer we got, the more werewolves I could feel. Their presence is a bit overwhelming. I have never been around so many rogues before. I reminded myself to hide my scent at all costs. Luke's smell will disguise my presence perfectly. I follow Maya closely, running next to her at all times. Then, I hear some footsteps heading in our direction from my side.

- Maya! – the voice calls.

- You keep going. I'll see what he wants and catch up with you. – she says, slowing down.

- Where's Luke going? – the male asks, reaching her.

That's the last thing I hear. Well, at least the disguise works like a charm. I run for a little while longer before I reach civilization. The place is filled with houses, some bigger than others and with different designs. There is no pavement, it's just grass and patches of dirt here and there. Now I understand why Caleb was so amazed at my house, they do give off a very cozy and rustic vibe to the area, very warm and soothing I'll admit, but these buildings are probably half as big as houses in River Valley. However, it does look like they were planned because they are well-organized side by side.

I take a deep breath to get a better feeling of the place. The place smells so fresh and natural, it's delightful. No wonder Caleb loves it here, I could definitively see myself waking up to such a natural smell. So, I decided to take another breath, but this time to see if I can catch Caleb's scent somewhere.

I inhale deeply, focusing on the aromas my nose perceives. Grass, wet earth, wood, trees, it's all so fresh and organic. Okay, concentrate on the people now. I'm able to smell a lot of wolves from all ages and sizes, but not... wait... strawberries and morning dew, that's him. I start walking in the direction the scent comes from, the streets are empty, with not a single soul outside. I can't sense anyone inside the houses either. They're probably at the arena, waiting for the match to take place. I turn left, feeling the aroma getting stronger. I inhale again to get a better clue. It's stronger to the rig- left... straight, no, it's back? I circle in place, I'm so confused. My mate's scent is so easy to perceive, yet somehow, no matter how much I concentrate, I can't put heads or tails where the scent is coming from. It's all over the place, I have no idea where to go. Ahhhhhh! I scream internally.

My thoughts are suddenly interrupted by some voices coming straight ahead, it's a couple. They are talking about nothing important really, just plain grown-up stuff. There's are not alone, a small group of people are with them and seem to be heading somewhere. Maybe I can get some information about where Caleb is if I follow them. Remember what Maya told you; stay quiet, head down, and keep your distance. I start following them with a reasonable distance between us. I overhear their conversation to see if they mention Caleb at all, but no. We continue walking like this for a while until another group of wolfs joins in from the left. They are four wolves, two girls, and two boys, between 14 and 16. A brunette and a redhead girl, the guys look alike; one is wearing a cap and is taller than the other one.

- Who do you think is going to win? I think Dyrus might have a chance. – cap guy says.

- Are you kidding me? Caleb is stronger, everyone knows it. – the smaller guy says.

- He's mated to a domestic. – cap-guy adds mockingly. I'm a little offended but remain quiet.

- Nah, I think that's all bullshit, an excuse to challenge. –

- I agree. Dyrus is just jealous. – blondie speaks.

- It doesn't matter now. The two strongest wolves in this generation are facing off. I just passed by their house; it's completely surrounded, and it looks like a prison. – brunette says.

Bingo. I start walking in the direction they came from. Shit. I can't believe they're treating him like a traitor. A day ago, he was the future Beta in Command and now, he's on the verge of being exiled. Some wolves come in my direction, making my nerves grow. I look down and hope they won't recognize me. I hold my breath as they walk past me, not even glancing at me. I feel so relieved and continue walking. No one else is around. I concentrate to see if I can sense Caleb. His scent is stronger, but I still can't point out exactly where it comes from.

- Luke! – a female voice calls from behind.

Shit, that's not Maya. I close my eyes and stiffen in place, my body paralyzes. I was so close. What do I do? Do I keep walking like I didn't hear a thing? Run? Fuck, I'm so screwed. Maybe I can knock her out and hide her somewhere.

- Hey, Luke. – she calls again. Starting to walk in my direction. – Turn around. – the voice sounds closer.

I sigh deeply, preparing myself. Then I feel someone grab my left arm, I turn quickly and to my surprise it's Maya. Thank the Goddess, she smiles at me.

- Riley, hey. If you don't mind, I need to speak with him privately. – the blond speaks.

- Oh... is everything all right? – the girl wonders.

- Yeah, we just need to discuss some things. We'll see you at the arena, okay? – Maya speaks confidently and calmly, her heart steady.

- Okay. Don't take too long, the fight is about to start. – she says.

- Sure. Save us a spot. – Maya says and the girl starts walking away.

By the Moon, that was a close one. We are so lucky; this is the second time we've almost been caught. I don't think it'll work a third time. I was ready to knock that girl out. I just hope it doesn't come to that.

- I've been looking for you everywhere, I thought they caught you. – Maya says when the girl is a safe distance away. - How did you know Caleb's house is this way? –

- I overheard some wolves say something about his house. So, I walked in the direction they came from. – I say lowly. I can feel my heart relaxing in my chest. I've been trying to keep calm not to accelerate my heartbeats.

- That was smart. Maybe you do have what it takes to survive. – she compliments, but it sounded like an insult as well.

- Thank you? – I respond, unsure.

- Let's keep going, we're almost there. – she says walking swiftly. I follow quickly behind.

- What's the plan to get passed the Elites? – I wonder.

- Don't speak so loudly, we are almost there. – she scolds. – I'm going to distract them enough for you to sneak in from behind. You need to be quick; I don't think can hold them off a lot. –

- Okay. – I say, following her.

- There are about six or seven, so you'll need to be sneaky. – she adds as we turn around the block. She abruptly stops. – Shit... – she mutters.

- What? –

- That's Caleb's house. – she points to the house in the middle. It's a big rustic house, bigger than the houses nearby.

- There's no one around. – I say confused.

- I don't understand. I was here ten minutes ago; the place was surrounded by elites. – she says worriedly.

The whole street looks like a ghost town, there's not a single soul around. The place is so quiet, you can hear the wind humbling. We run up to the house quickly and open the door, getting inside. I pull back the hoodie since we are no longer exposed.

- Cal! – Maya calls out loudly, walking over to another room. I follow her into the living room.

- I don't think anyone is here. – I say dreadfully. Fuck, we're too late.

- This can't be. – Maya says her voice shattering.

- We can... - I shut up as a figure enters the room. A girl, about Cole's age, maybe a little older, with brown eyes and hair. Her eyes drift between us and a confused look grows on her face

- Jamie. – Maya says. Oh, she's Caleb's sister.

- Who is he? – she questions immediately.

- Hi. – I wave and smile lightly. – My name is Nathan, I'm... –

- Caleb's mate. – she fills in and I simply nod, startled. She starts analyzing me from top to bottom. I've never felt so judged in my whole life. – What is he doing here? – she turns to Maya.

- You'll see, we... –

- I'm here for Caleb. Maya told me about the challenge, she's helping me try to stop this and save him. – I answer, speaking over Maya.

- Is that true? – she asks the blonde.

- Yeah. He's good. – she affirms, the brown hair girl nods. – Where is everyone? –

- At the arena, the fight is about to start. I came back for Ally's jacket. – she answers, holding the small piece of cloth up. – Caleb and Dyrus are already there. – she adds.

- Fuck! – I yell, bringing my hand to my head. I already got this far to turn back. – Okay, new plan. We go to the arena. – I suggest.

- It's too dangerous, Nathan. It's too late. – Maya says sadly, holding herself from crying.

- I don't care, I'm not giving up on him. – I say firmly. No, I'll never give up on him.

- It'll never work. They'll recognize you. – she says demoralized, sitting down tiredly.

- Fine, I'll go there alone then. Just tell me where to go – I say.

- The place is full, there's no way to make it to the center. You'll never reach him before the fight starts. –

- I don't fucking care! – I yell. – He's your best friend and my mate, I'm getting to him. Even if I have to fight against Alaric to do so. – I speak firmly. Maya simply shakes her head, tears in her eyes.

- I'll help you out. – Jamie says. – I can get you close enough. We are in the front row because we are family. Everyone will be focused on the fight; hopefully, they won't notice you are there. – she says.

- Let's go then. – I say quickly, the younger wolf nods and turns around – Are you coming? – I ask Maya. She takes a second to think.

- Yeah. – she stands up motivated. – Luke will be there; you can't smell like him. You'll have to mask the scent. – she adds.

- I- I don't know how to do that. – I admit a bit shily. Both look at me confused. – Caleb never taught me to completely dissipate my scent, much less someone else's. – I explain.

- I take it back. You are like a bleeding cow in the wild, you wouldn't make it a day. – Maya says harshly. – We'll have to help him. – she tells Jamie.

- Okay, we need to hurry. – Jamie speaks quickly.

We run off to the arena, heading in the direction we came from. It's quite far away, this place is way bigger than I thought. I don't know where exactly we are headed so I simply follow their lead. I just hope we make it before the fight starts. We run there as fast as we can, and I start feeling the immense number of werewolves located in the same place. Shit! The Lazarus pack is this big? No wonder they are so feared by everyone. With those numbers, I doubt anyone can stand in their way. Apart from River Valley and White Claw Pack, of course.

My eyes open wide as we reach the arena. There are so many werewolves present, the smell coming off is strong and penetrating. The arena is huge, it could easily harbor over a hundred people. The arena is sunken in levels, resembling stairs, going down to the main field. It's hard to believe it's completely natural, but everything is made of grass and dirt. There are some trees as well in between some levels. Wow, it's just dazzling to see. Everyone is surrounding the field. No one seems to stay put, moving around, and cheering loudly that I can barely see through.

- Fuck, the fight already started. – Maya speaks. No...

- It's okay, the plan can still work. We only need to get Caleb to see him. – Jamie says. She's right, the fight can still be forfeited. – Come on, this way. –

I can feel Maya and Jamie's presence surrounding mine, somehow lowering the smell of Luke's sweatshirt. It's hard to explain, they're not masking the scent, it's more like neutralizing it. The smell simply vanishes, it's amazing and confusing at the same time. Cal's sister starts taking us to the center, walking in between wolves. It's just like she said, everyone is too focused on the battle to care. I can finally see Caleb through the multitude, he's at the center with another werewolf our age; both are shirtless and throwing punches at each other. The wolf is smaller than my boyfriend, but that doesn't stop him from attacking ferociously. My eyes are locked in the fight, watching worriedly everything that happens.

I continue watching the fight as we follow Jamie. We are getting closer to the front line. Then, the other wolf, Dyrus I think is his name, lands a clean punch to Caleb's face. I stop and suppress the urge to scream, fisting my hands. Fortunately, Caleb defends himself, grabbing the arm of the wolf and throwing him, creating some distance between them. It looks like they are speaking, but I can't hear a thing because of the crowd's loud noises. Maya's hand pushes my back reassuringly, prompting me to keep walking. I can feel my heart pounding like crazy, the mate bond screaming at me. How am I going to stop this?
