"Marni, wake up."
I opened my eyes to find Damon shaking my arm.
"What time is it?" I asked, yawning. I looked outside to see the familiar surroundings of our garage. We were home.
"It's around eleven," he said. I yawned again and hopped out of the car. When I closed the door, I noticed something. People yelling.
I looked over at Damon. "That's not good."
I went inside and followed the sound of yelling.
I walked into the living room and found Katherine and Stefan at each others throats. Figeratively speaking. Alaric was there also, looking back and forth between Katherine and Stefan.
"Why the hell didn't you tell us this?" Stefan yelled.
"What's going on?" I asked. They turned to us.
They obviously hadn't noticed that we were there.
"Ask her," Stefan spat.
I looked to Katherine.
"Who's life did you ruin now?" Damon asked.
"Ha, ha," Katherine said, glaring at him.
"Go on Katherine," Stefan said. "Tell them why you're really here,"
"Oh yes Katherine," Damon said. "Do tell,"
"Very well then," she said. "I'm here for the moonstone,"
"Moonstone?" I asked, unfamilliar with the term.
"Ask Alaric," Katherine said.
All heads turned to him.
"While you two were away," Alaric said, looking at me and Damon. "Stefan and I went to my late wife, Isobel's office at Duke University. Isobel studied the supernatural, she became obsessed with it. I thought it was all nonsense at the time, but as we all know, it wasn't. With the help of her assistant, Vanessa, we went through her research. The moonstone its self looked a bit like a bar of soap. Have you ever heard of The Sun and The Moon Curse?"
I shook my head.
"Well, The Sun and The Moon Curse is a curse a great shaman cast 600 years ago. Since then, werewolves can only turn on a full moon and vampires are weakened by the sun, making werewolves servants of the moon and vampires slaves to the sun."
"Wait, wait, wait," Damon said. "Werewolves?"
"Yes, werewolves," Alaric said.
"Werewolves don't exist," Damon said.
"Yes, actually, they do," Alaric said. "Witches and vampires are, so why not werewolves?"
"If werewolves exist," Damon said. "Where the hell have they been for the past century and a half? I think I would've come across one of them by now."
"Well, you wouldn't have," Alaric said. "Vampires hunted werewolves to a near extinction in fear of their lives."
"You don't see us running around killing witches," Damon said, gesturing to me. "So why would we kill werewolves?"
"Because a bite from a werewolf can kill a vampire,"
"Oh," he said. "Now I get it."
"Anyway," I said. "What has this got to do with Katherine?"
"She wants the moonstone so she can break the curse," Stefan said.
"So?" I asked.
"Katherine, why don't you tell them how you break the curse," Stefan said.
"It's a long story," Katherine said.
"I've got time," I said.
She sighed. "Have you ever heard of the Originals?"
"Nope,"
"Well, they're the original vampires," she said. "The first vampires ever to roam the earth."
"They must feel special," I said.
"You won't be laughing when I finish," Katherine said. "The leader of the Originals, Klaus, wants to break the curse. In order to break the curse, you have to sacrifise a vampire, a werewolf, and a Petrova doppleganger. In other words, Klaus was going to kill me in order to break the curse."
"Wait," I said. "I thought you were a Pierce,"
"Back when I was human, my name was Katerina Petrova," she said. "Fearing for my life, I ran. I severely injured myself and one of Klaus's alies gave me blood to heal, because my life was so valuable. After they did that, I killed myself, thus becoming a vampire. I stole the moonstone and ran, and I've been running from him ever since. That's why I faked my death, so he would stop looking for me. But, when the other twenty-six vampires got out of the tomb, word got out that I was still alive, and now Klaus is on his way to find me. Well, Elijah is, but I'm presuming Klaus is aswell."
"Who's Elijah?" I asked.
"An Original," she said. "He was the one who was meant to bring me to Klaus,"
"That's a touching story and all," Damon said. "But where is the moonstone now?"
"The Lockwoods have it," she said.
"Why do they have it?"
"Back in 1864, I made a deal with a werewolf, who was also a Lockwood. He gave me my freedom in return for the moonstone."
"The Lockwoods are werewolves?" I asked in disbelief.
She nodded.
"How do you plan on getting it?" Damon asked.
"Mayor Lockwoods brother, Mason, is going to get it for me," she said.
"Another one of your boytoys?" Damon asked.
She ignored him.
"What do you intend to do once you get the moonstone?" I asked.
"Propose a trade to Klaus and Elijah," she said. "The moonstone for my freedom."
Something clicked in. Elena was a Petrova doppleganger.
"You're going to give Klaus the moonstone so they can kill Elena just so they can break a stupid curse?" I asked, outraged.
"So not happening," Damon said.
"Look, I'll do anything for my own personal gain," she said. "You should know that."
"It was all a lie, wasn't it?" I asked. "What you said to me in the kitchen the other night, it was all a lie."
"No, actually, it wasn't."
I was so angry at her right now. I could just... throw a brick at her face or something.
"Get out," I said.
"What?"
"I said get out!" I yelled at her. With another look at all of us, she disappeared.
"Does Elena know?" I asked quietly.
"Not yet," Stefan said. "I'm about to go over there and tell her though."
I nodded.
"I should get going too," Alaric said. "I have essays to grade."
I started laughing.
"Trust you to grade essays at a time like this," I said.
"Well, you have duties in being a history teacher," he said.
"Have fun," I said.
"Oh don't worry, grading essays is the highlight of my day," he said.
"I bet it is," I said.
Him and Stefan left, leaving me and Damon just standing there.
"I just love how our lives are so peaceful and uneventful," Damon said.
"I know," I said.
"Well Marni," Damon said. "Looks like we have a new task on our hands. Find the moonstone before Katherine."
The bell for class had already rung when I walked down the hall way. When I neared the corner, I slowed. I could hear arguing.
I walked out to see what was going on. Tyler Lockwood and some other guy were yelling at each other. With out warning, Tyler slammed the guy into the lockers and punched him in the face.
"Whoa, what the hell's going on?" I said, stepping inbetween them.
The other guy glared at Tyler and stormed off.
"What the hell was that?" I asked Tyler. He seemed really shaky and jitterish.
"Nothing," he muttered.
"Didn't look like nothing," I said. "You almost broke that guys nose."
"I lost control of my anger okay?"
"Clearly," I said. "What's going on Tyler?"
"My uncle Mason came into town yesterday and told me something about my family that I didn't know, it's just got me on edge, that's all."
Mason. Katherines boytoy.
"You know," I realised.
"Know what?" he asked.
"About the werewolf curse," I said. I couldn't help myself.
"How do you know about that?" he asked.
Crap.
"Look, uh, forget I said anything," I said. I turned to leave, but he grabbed my arm.
"How do you know?" he asked.
He pinned me up against the lockers.
"Let me go Tyler," I said.
"How do you know?" he asked again.
"Let. Me. Go," I said through gritted teeth. I flicked my hand and he shot back, hitting the lockers opposite us.
I turned to leave again, but stopped. This could be my way of getting the moonstone.
I sighed and walked over to Tyler, helping him up.
"I guess we should talk," I said.
