Chapter 12: Blue (2)
Time passed as Blue Leaf stayed in Saffron City.
She did not know how long.
For her attention was always on Eevee.
The poor Pokémon was beaten.
In body and spirit.
Shortly after receiving her, Blue introduced her Pokémon to the fox.
"So this here's the gang, Ivy you know," the girl introduced, trying to stay positive.
She had decided to nickname her Pokémon in an effort to make sure Eevee would not be intimidated by her new fellows.
It was a small thing but she wanted to do everything she could to help the brown fox.
"Haunty, Cleffy and Vulpy," Blue finished.
Her hand made its way towards Eevee's head.
"I wonder what I should call you?"
"I know this is sudden, but I hope we could get alo—"
Eevee weakly glanced at her and slowly tilted her head.
That was more than enough to trigger Blue's phobia.
In an instant, she jerked her hand away.
Trembling with horror.
"Vee…" Eevee called out weakly.
"I… I…" Blue muttered, her bottled fear leaking faster.
Her heart beats faster.
Adrenaline kicked in.
And Eevee fell asleep.
'I'm scared… Was it because she bit me that time?' Blue thought.
Her Ivysaur, now Ivy, her starter understood.
The Pokémon could only look in horror at his Trainer's shivering hands.
'No, that wasn't it.'
'I was scared of how distant Eevee was to me…' she concluded, face pale.
The girl knew.
She never conquered her fears.
The gloves were just her escape from the truth.
'Whoever heard of a Trainer scared to touch their own Pokémon?'
Ivy reached out to her with his vine.
Seeing this, Blue unconsciously flinched away.
'At some point, I thought…' she thought to herself.
'If I went on a journey…'
Ivysaur wore a hurt expression.
'Even a coward like me…'
'… might be able to become a great Trainer someday.'
The tears spilled out.
Days bled into weeks.
But Eevee was still asleep.
It was as if the Pokémon was building up walls around it.
"… It must be dreaming," Nurse Joy observed.
The nurse was checking on Eevee's condition, who was in her Ball.
"It's been in REM sleep for a long time," the nurse continued.
"A defense mechanism to cope with extreme stress. You see this in Pokémon who struggle to adapt to changes in their environment."
"Is there anything you can do?" Blue asked the nurse, hopeful for a way.
But Nurse Joy shook her head with a sad expression.
"All I can do now is making sure Eevee gets enough nourishment ," she said.
"But to get the root of her condition…"
"We need to do something about the cause of its trauma." Nurse Joy finished.
Blue pulled her white hat down on her face.
Encouraging her tears to fall.
"The cause? It's gotta be Raticate, isn't it?" a voice from the PC spoke.
Blue had contacted Ash for help.
The raven-haired boy was caught up to speed.
"Hah… if only there was a way to contact the Professor. Too bad he's at a conference," he sighed while putting on his vest, now beaten up.
Noticing this, Blue took a closer look.
Ash had bandages wrapped around his upper arms inside his shirt.
As well as plasters on his forearms and face.
"Red? What happened to you?" she asked worried.
The boy then held up an orange creature wearing a skull for Blue to see.
He told the girl about his encounter with Team Rocket.
And how they hunted down Cubone's kind to sell their skulls.
It disgusted the chestnut-haired girl to no end.
"So now, the little guy's with me now," Ash explained, holding Cubone close to him.
'No wonder Haunty was so jumpy…' Blue thought, understanding her Pokémon's actions from the past.
A blur of purple appeared behind Ash from the screen.
"?! Red, behind you!" Blue cried out, warning her friend to move.
An Ekans bared its fangs on the young Trainer.
"Pika!" Pikachu squeaked out, protecting his partner by batting off the purple snake with an [Iron Tail].
"Not this time, kid. Hand it over," a Rocket grunt warned.
Soon, a dozen of them flooded the PokéCenter where Ash was.
"Red!" Blue cried out again, wishing the boy would run off to safety.
"So, you followed me back to the PokéCenter…" Ash said.
His eyes hidden by the visor of his cap.
When he showed his face, Blue was shocked at her friend's expression.
A face of anger.
His red eyes seemed to glow in rage.
An air of rage surrounding him.
Pikachu was no different.
"Sorry Blue…" Ash spoke with indignation, trying his best not to scare the girl by restraining the ire in his voice.
But to no success.
"I've gotta deal with these assholes."
And with that, the monitor went black.
Blue knew Ash was not a person who spew profanities often.
That and the anger he displayed frightened her.
'I had no idea…' she thought.
Time went on mercilessly.
'No, it's more like…'
Newspaper articles about Team Rocket printed out endlessly.
'I've avoided the truth for so long…'
The girl froze upon hearing a news anchor detailing the Saffron City's news.
'That this world…'
Harsh realities.
"Two children were seen breaking into Silph Co..."
An unsaved soul.
'Is not all sunshine and rainbows.'
Death readied its scythe.
"Now known as Team Rocket's base of operation."

And the girl sprinted.
