I wanted you to tuck me in,
I wanted you to kiss my forehead.
I wanted you to stroke my hair as you smiled down at me softly.
I wanted you to whisper goodnight
and tell me that you loved me,
that I was the light out of your whole day,
that I was your reason for being.
I wanted you to ask me how I was
and ask how my day was.
I wanted you to listen.
I wanted you to care.
I wanted you to hold me in your arms while I wept because of the heartbreak I was experiencing.
I wanted you to support me.
I wanted you to eat dinner with me,
I wanted you to help with my homework,
I wanted you to laugh at my stories.
I wanted you to show me off to your friends,
I wanted you to be proud of me,
proud that I was your daughter.
I wanted you to catch me when I fell
and patch up grazes.
I wanted you to love me.
Why couldn't you love me, dad?
Why was I so hard to love?
