Violet Medina - LaRusso is the daughter of Louie LaRusso, Jr., who is the younger cousin of two-time All Valley karate champion and well known car salesman Daniel LaRusso.
Louie and Violet's mom, Alicia, were only together for two months when they found out Alicia was pregnant. He wanted her to get an abortion or adopt out since they were so young and not ready to be parents. Alicia refused because she's always wanted to be a mom, even though she didn't want or expect to be one so young.
After Alicia told Louie she was keeping the baby, he broke up with her because he still didn't want a baby. He didn't want to give up his partying lifestyle and be tied down to a girlfriend and a baby. But Louie's family, especially Daniel, his wife Amanda, and his mother Lucille supported Alicia throughout her pregnancy and always made sure she had what she needed.
Alicia and Amanda were actually pregnant at the same time, due one month apart. Alicia gave birth to Violet one month before Amanda gave birth to Samantha. Violet and Samantha have grown up more like sisters instead of cousins. Daniel and Amanda have always made sure Violet is included in their family activities, knowing that Louie most likely wouldn't do them with her. So when Daniel started teaching Samantha karate, he of course taught Violet too.
Louie didn't become interested in being a dad until Violet was around three years old. He saw Daniel taking over the role of Violet's father figure and started feeling left out. Eventually he and Alicia had to go to court over it because they couldn't come to an agreement themselves, even with Daniel and Amanda mediating.
In court Louie got put on Violet's birth certificate after a DNA test confirming he's the father and compromised with Alicia about her last name. Violet's last name used to be just Medina, which is Alicia's last name. Louie wanted to change it to LaRusso, but Alicia wouldn't go for it. So they had to meet in the middle and hyphenate their last names together.
As for custody, Louie was just granted supervised visits at first since Violet didn't know him well. It took two more years for him to be granted partial custody, where he got to start keeping Violet for a week at a time every other week, and that's what they've been doing ever since.
The first week he had her, Louie quickly realized that having a five year old daughter isn't just having fun and playing. When she was little and he got overwhelmed or didn't know what to do, he would just take her over to Daniel and Amanda's house to play with Sam and have them help him.
As for their relationship now, it changes. Even though he is older now, Louie still isn't the most mature or responsible. He makes a lot of bad decisions that affect Violet more than he realizes. When that happens, Violet goes through a period of annoyance, not hatred, for her father. But because she can't stay mad long, she always eventually forgives and forgets until it happens again.
"Vivi!" Alicia calls through their apartment. "They're here!"
"Be out in a second!" Violet calls back to her mom.
Violet grabs the rest of her things and goes to the living room where Daniel and Amanda are waiting for her.
"Hey kiddo!" Daniel smiles. "You ready for the country club?"
"Of course." Violet returns his smile.
Daniel chuckles and turns to Alicia. "We'll have her back here around seven."
"Sounds good!" Alicia pulls her daughter in for a hug. "I love you. Have fun and behave. I'll see you later."
"I love you too mama." Violet says, kissing her mom's cheek.
Violet smiles as she gets into Daniel's SUV and greets Anthony, but frowns when she realizes Sam isn't there. Sam has been hanging out with the mean girls at school most of the summer and not talking to Violet and their friend Aisha as much.
"I'm sorry Sam's not here. She didn't feel like coming today." Amanda says.
Violet knows that's bullshit and Sam's probably hanging out with her other friends, but she's not gonna bring it up.
"It's okay." Violet smiles weakly
After about a fifteen minute drive, the LaRusso's arrive at Encino Oaks Country Club. Daniel and Amanda have Violet on their membership so she can come whenever she wants, which Violet appreciates deeply because she has always loved coming to the country club. Mostly for the food.
Violet is sitting at a table with Anthony, who is entranced in his tablet, while waiting for Aisha and her family to show up. She looks up when Daniel sits in front of Anthony.
"Hey, why don't you check out that magician over there? He's doing some pretty amazing tricks."
"I'm on level ten." Anthony says, as if Daniel's supposed to know what that means.
"Come on. You can play that game anywhere." Daniel says.
Violet scoffs. "You got that right."
"How about we shoot some hoops?" Daniel offers. "I'll win you a prize."
"I'm thirsty." Anthony says, ignoring his dad's offer.
"Great, there's a bar right over there. Let's take a walk, we'll get a couple sodas." Daniel stands up, patting Anthony's shoulder.
"Nah, I'm good." Anthony says, still not taking his eyes off of his tablet.
Violet rolls her eyes and also gets up, following Daniel who has given up on Anthony.
"You know, I would have killed to visit a club like this when I was his age." Daniel shakes his head. "You know where I had to hang out in the summer? On a filthy street in Newark with a broken-"
"-fire hydrant next to aunt Tessie's." Amanda and Violet finish in unison, having heard that anecdote from Daniel a million times.
"What do you say we let Anthony play with his thing and we all get some drinks?" Amanda suggests.
"Dirty martinis?" Daniel asks, hopeful.
"Yes, ice cold." Amanda says, turning to the bartender. "And a Shirley Temple for the minor."
Violet laughs. "Thanks Amanda."
"LaRussos!" the familiar voice of Isaiah Robinson, hall of fame lineman for the chargers and father of her best friend calls out.
"Hey!" Violet smiles.
"Hey!" Aisha smiles back, pulling Violet in for a hug.
Aisha frowns. "No Sam?"
Violet sighs. "Nope."
Violet and Aisha say a quick bye to their family and start walking around.
"I don't get what she sees in the popular people." Violet says.
"Me neither." Aisha says. "Sam has never cared about popularity before."
"I'm her family and I don't feel like I know her anymore." Violet frowns. "I thought for sure she'd be here because she never likes to miss a good country club party."
"Yeah, me too." Aisha agrees sadly.
"At least we still have each other, right?" Violet smiles, trying to lift the mood.
Aisha nods as the girls link their arms together. "Always."
