Chapter 1

' Elena!'

Immediately I was brought back into reality, aware that somebody was calling me. But who?

' Elena, what are you doing?'

It was my best friend, Taylor, who had a worried look on her face.

'Why were you smiling?' she asked.

Had I smiled? I didn't know, I was just dreaming away, like I always do. I was dreaming about a guy I had met earlier and he had left a big impression on me. That guy had been one of a kind. Ever since I met him, I've been hoping of meeting him again. You probably want to know and even if you don't, I'm still gonna tell you.

School went by very boring and I had nothing to look forward to that day. After school, I had to work and then study for a major English quiz. My friend Taylor, as always, just kept on talking about a subject that had been on everyone's mind. I, on the other hand, have been trying to forget the whole thing. Prom was coming up. I hate Prom, simple as that. My reasons? I have plenty of reasons.

First of all, I can't dance. I can't ' move to the groove'  and I can't 'shake it up'.

My second reason is the fact that I don't have money for cool dances. I actually don't have money for a lot of things. Wait, let me rephrase that. I have a job, so I do get enough money to buy nice dresses and matching shoes. It's just that I can't actually buy them.

The reason? I'm saving up for college. It's been my dream ever since I was little! To go the college of my dreams, I'm making a lot of sacrifices. I study every night, so I can be a straight A student, with the exception of one lousy B for Gym, but you can't have it all right? I was made for learning, not running! This probably won't come in handy, if some psycho maniac ever tries to kill me, but I'll see when that moment comes. I want to get into college to get a good job, so I can support my family.

I come from a poor family and I want to take care of my family, because my father can't work due to an injury. I've got two little brothers and one baby sister. I'm not the oldest, my bigger brother was, but he's gone, just like my mom. Not in the way that they moved out, but in the way that I'll never be able to see them again. Thinking about them hurts. They weren't supposed to die!

This whole mess had happened on a dark night and I bet you're thinking right now: What a shocker! I know, doesn't everything bad happen on a dark night? But it wasn't  a normal night, that night had changed everything and it didn't just take away my mom and my brother, it had also left my father injured. That night has made me to the girl I am now. I don't trust people easily, nor will I ever. Some things leave scars for life. Okay, I have completely drifted off. I want to talk about my reasons of hating prom.

Well, my third reason it that when you go to a normal dance, you can go with your girls. Our school doesn't have dances, just proms. I don't know what it's like at other schools, but unfortunately, at our school you have to go with a date. It's an unwritten law.

To make my point clear, there had been a girl, named Suzie, who had gone alone to Prom and to meet her friends there. You know what happened to that poor girl? They laughed and laughed at her, from the moment she walked in till the moment she had left the prom. The girl had the guts to stay, but eventually left when the popular clique (those are the cheerleaders and the jocks)  decided to throw punch all over her dress. I know, very cliché, but that was the last any one had ever seen of Suzy. Sad, right ?

So, I have only had one boyfriend in my life and that relationship was a total drama. I have never had a normal relationship after that, because that night had happened and I haven't been able to trust anyone else since. But it's not just that, because guys don't show interest in me, whatsoever! So I can't go to prom, because I don't have a date, nor will I ever, because of the fact that guys don't seem interested in me and I have trust problems. That's why I hate Prom and I hope you can empathize with me.

So Taylor was talking about Prom and the fact that she could finally go this year. I didn't tell you, but she had already found a cute guy that's beyond perfect for her and he's taking her to Prom. We had been in together in the whole 'I don't want a boyfriend, I don't need a boyfriend' thing, but now it's just me. So now I don't look emancipated, I just look sad and lonely.

So I specifically told her I wasn't going to Prom, when she told me: ' Elena, you should go! We could dance together and have so much fun!'

I looked at her with a dumbfounded expression, ready to bring out the Suzy story, when she continued: 'They changed the rules this year, you don't have to go with a date anymore!'

In shock, I whispered: 'Are you sure?'

She laughed at my expression and then answered: 'Ofcourse I'm sure! You don't have to be afraid, because it's aloud now AND it's a masquerade! Can you believe it? This is gonna be the best! Finally, our school has come up with a cool theme!'

I looked at her with a scowl and answered her: 'Do you really think I would like a masquerade? Do you truly believe I would go to a masquerade?' Do you not know me by now?'

She finally understood that I was definitely not going to the masquerade, so she put on her puppy dog eyes: 'Please, please, please! Can you please go for me? We can have so much fun! I'll do anything for you!' You wouldn't even have to worry about the dress, because my aunt will make them for us! Please, just this one thing and I will never ask you anything more!'

I smiled, saying: ' Nope.'

That's wasn't the end of it. She kept on bother me the whole week, but not just at school. When Taylor wants something, she'll do anything to achieve it. So, she kept calling me and stopping by at my job to ask me about the prom.

Eventually, I just couldn't take it any more and I swear I would've have hurt her if she asked me one more time, so on Tuesday I exclaimed: ' Fine, I'll go to the stupid masquerade!'

Her face had lit up like a birthday cake and she hugged me tight! ' Thank you, thank you thank you! This is gonna be the best dance ever!' she cheered happily.

We were standing by our lockers the whole time, and then we started walking towards the school gates. There she gave me one last hug, before going her way home.

Unfortunately, my home is on the opposite side of where her home is, so I hugged her back and started making my way home. When I got there, I greeted everyone with a big smile, keeping up the charade, acting like we're just one big happy family and I went to the kitchen. I put on my uniform very quick and then raced out the door, because I was running late. Normally, I wouldn't mind, but my boss is like a bloodhound. He can sniff out your mistakes and trust me, he wouldn't hesitate on firing you. I've seen him doing it, I think he actually loves firing people, so I don't want to give him a reason.

And guess where I work, it's the best work a girl could have! I work at a fast food restaurant. Don't you just love angry people yelling at you when you're working to ' slow', or when they tell you that teenagers shouldn't work yet, because they are ignorant? If I didn't need the money and if my colleagues weren't so nice, I wouldn't have lasted a day. But hey, you win some, you lose some! I made it to work just in time and went to the register.

Great, I thought, when I saw a couple of old people waiting. Old people are the worst, they don't only complain about the pace you're working, but also about how the prices have gone higher and that it was better in 'the old days'. Do I look like somebody who cares how it was in 'the old days'? Apparently I do, or else they wouldn't be telling me their lame stories, but I just nod with a friendly smile, hoping it won't be a long story. A few hours later, I realized work hadn't been so bad. The old people who I dealt with first, turned out to be very sweet and patient.

The rest of the hours passed by slowly. Then, I realized I was getting extremely tired, but I knew I still had to work for half an hour. It had gotten quiet in the restaurant. I had talked with my colleague, but she had her break, so it was lonely me at the cash register.

All of a sudden, a few guys enter the restaurant. The guy up front had a smile on his face and was

walking towards me. The rest of the guys behind him were laughing and punching each other, for no apparent reasons. They're guys, do they need reasons?

So, as the guy started to approach me, I could see that he wasn't a regular guy. You already know, this is 'the guy' I had told you about. The guy I had been dreaming of. I could tell that he didn't look bad when he entered the restaurant, but I hadn't seen the details. I did see, that he had an arrogant aura, from the way he walked. He was walking like he knew he was nice to look at. Although, nice is an understatement. When he got closer, that's the moment I stopped breathing. The moment my whole body just kind of choked in shock. It was the moment when he blew me away.
