It was a normal day at work. Patients coming in and out with minor injuries. Jay was at work just like usual. The question I get asked the most is "Don't you worry about him?" And the answer is always yes. I dread getting the call that Jay didn't make it out alive and today my nightmare came true.
"Y/N! Your in cubical 3! A detective got shot on a call" Maggie explained to me as I put on my rubber gloves
I ran in and felt my heart sink. It was my husband lying on the stretcher. My husband who was bleeding severely from his chest. However it was all up to me to save him.
"We can't get a rhythm. He coded in the ambulance and we have him a round of epi. We have been doing CPR for about 5 minuets now" Gabby states as I glance over at Brett who is still doing CPR on Jay
"Okay...April take over CPR. I'll control his bleeding" I ordered as April ran over to Jay
"Are you sure your okay handling this?" April asked as she started CPR on Jay
"There's no other doctors available. I have to be" I answered as I grabbed a packet of gauze from the drawer
I packed his wound as best as I could. His bleeding stopped however April still can't get a steady rhythm.
"You know the rules Y/N! After 10 minutes and he's far from saving" April said dreading my reaction
"That's Ethans rules! Not mine! Move over and I'll take over!" I shouted as I started CPR on Jay
5 minuets went by and he still had no rhythm, then another and another. We had been doing CPR on Jay for 20 minuets. April shot me "the look" and I knew what was coming
"Time of death 15:43" I said as I ripped off my gloves and shoved them on the floor
My husband was gone. His organs had stopped working and his heart had stopped beating. There was no life left in him. He was covered in blood and the anger got the best of me.
"Who was with him!" I shouted as the unit turned their heads to look at me
"Kevin, why?" Adam replied as I felt the anger build up inside of me
"Jays Dead" I blurted out not sure how to tell them
The whole unit didn't know what to say until Kevin walked up to me.
"I'm so sorry Y/N. I know how much he meant to you" Kevin said as he tired to hug me but I pushed him away
"He's only dead because you couldn't save him! Did you not have his back in there?! My husband is dead! He's never going to have kids or god Kevin he's never going to grow old!" I shouted as the tears started to steam down my face
I walked away with tears in my eyes. I pulled out my phone and sat down. I read out the last text he ever sent me
